Students Leadership Challenge 2018 In celebration of his more than 50 years in martial arts, Master Park is offering a “Students Leadership Challenge 2018.” Park has been training and instructing martial arts to all ages for more than five decades in the United States and Korea. The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on June 9 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Ed Pabst will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances between the tips. This will be a high/low dance with tips for new dancers and tips for more experienced dancers. Choir hosts dinner and special performance

Poland Seminary High School’s choir had a dinner at the school on May 19 for parents where they entertained the guests.

The parents and grandparents of students within the high school choir bought tickets to a special dinner catered by Ciminero’s Banquet Centre that was followed by a unique performance by members of the choir.

“It gives the kids a chance to perform and show their talents,” said choir teacher Shannon Nicholson. She is in her first year at Poland and had seen that the dinner had been successful in the past, so she decided to bring it back.

The parents and grandparents arrived at the school and went to the cafeteria for their dinner.

While handing in their tickets, they could buy 50/50 raffle tickets or buy a shirt from the choir.

After the dinner, the students sang Broadway songs in the auditorium. The students sang either by themselves, in duets or in small ensembles during the event. 45 students performed in 20 performances. The full choir also performed a couple songs.

The event worked as a fundraider for the group. The proceeds went directly back to the choir to help them improve their program.

The 12th annual Celebrate Poland event will take place on June 29 and 30, which will celebrate Independence Day and the community of Poland, Ohio.

The event starts on June 29 at 5:30 p.m. with the annual Strawberry Festival at Poland Presbyterian Church, located at 2 Poland Manor, followed by the Firemen’s Parade at 7 p.m.

Following the parade, at 7:45 p.m., will be a performance by the popular Cleveland area retro band, Disco Inferno. The band plays favorites from the disco era. Go dressed in your best 80’s attire for a costume

The festivities continue on June 30. Food vendors will be set up behind Village Hall during all of the Friday and Saturday events. A free WRTA shuttle will run from the Poland Methodist Church to Village Hall on Saturday from 12-4 p.m. Also, school buses will run, free of charge, from Poland Seminary High School and the Poland Methodist Church from 6:30-11p.m. on Saturday night.

While the parade, fireworks and the strawberry festival have long been a part of the Celebrate Poland event, the committee works hard to bring two days full of fun activities for the whole family, adding new activities each year.

Celebrate Poland is an all volunteer event, with all costs covered by donations from the community. The Celebrate Poland committee is comprised of local interested citizens and volunteer help from Poland churches, primarily New Life Church, Poland Village Baptist Church and Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.

Union students become principal for a day

Union Elementary School allowed students in each grade to become principal for a day on April 25, 26 and 27 as a part of their fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

Principal Michael Masucci took the children to the other Poland schools to introduce the students as the new principal.

Second-grader Jack Downie took over the role of principal on April 25, first-grade student Jayde Simon became the principal on April 26 and kindergart-

ner Will Gaffney was the principal for the final day.

“Let’s face it. I need all the help I can get these days and our school is filled with qualified individuals,” joked Masucci in a letter home to the parents about the event.

The students had doughnuts, a special lunch and a visit to the other schools. They met principals at the high school and middle school, rode from school to school in resource officer Steve Kent’s police car and talked to Superintendent David Janofa about becoming the principal.

Simon suggested a snow day in

her meeting with Janofa and wrote a “no homework pass” to her sisters in the middle school.

The program raised money for the Poland’s Relay for Life team. Students bought tickets for a dollar of six tickets for $5.

Masucci placed the tickets in a raffle and drew a ticket from each grade level.

Their earnings will combine with funds they have raised through the other programs, their Give Back Day and carnation sale, for the Poland Relay team. The two events earlier this year raised nearly $1,000.

Cardinal Mooney High School has announced their summer camp series. All camps will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown, and range in age from kindergarten through eighth-grade.

The boys’ basketball camp will run from June 19-21 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. for grades 4-9. The cost to participate is $60. The CMHS Football Camp of Champions will take place from June 25-26 from 8:3011:30 a.m. for grades 3-8. The cost to participate is $60. A cheer camp will be offered Aug. 1-3 from 8:3011:30 a.m. with a cheer exhibition on Aug. 3 at noon for those in grades 5-8. The cost is $50. A mini cheer camp will take place on Aug. 1-8 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The cost to participate is $40. The 2018 Poland Relay for Life will take place on June 23 at the Poland Seminary High School stadium. This year’s event is a “Luau for Life” and will start at 11 a.m. and end at 11 p.m. The annual Kids’ Party will take place at 1 p.m. with cake, games and prizes for children ages 10 and younger. The first 20 children in the gate will receive a free “Luau for Life” T-shirt, designed by Lillie Marshall who has been an active member of the Poland Relay for Life since 2014. She has been a volunteer server at the survivor dinner for the past three years. The Relay for Life survivor activities will begin at 5 p.m. with the Survivor Recognition, the crowning of the survivor royalty and survivor and caregiver laps around the track. Following the laps, the Survivor Dinner will begin. Every survivor will receive a free survivor T-shirt and a goodie bag. Each survivor is encouraged to bring a caregiver escort to the dinner. The Poland Relay for Life teams will feature food and raffle baskets at their tents, and vendors will be on site. There will be games and activities for all ages throughout the day. Kymberly Hoffman and Robert Switka, both of Boardman, were united in marriage Sept. 30, 2017, during a ceremony that was officiated by the Rev. Robert Quaintance at Good Hope Lutheran Church. A reception took place that evening at the Vineyards at Pine Lake.

The groom is a son of the late Robert G. Switka. Kenneth and Karla Hoffman of Boardman are the parents of the bride.

The bride wore an ivory and gold lace gown that featured a a sheer back detailed with buttons. It was embellished with beaded lace appliques and a Swarovksi crystal sash. The skirt extended to a chapel train, and a matching headpiece held her fingertip veil.

Tessa Lowry was maid of honor. Bridemaids were Elise Keller; Elizabeth Kelly, and Emily Wollett, the bride’s cousins; Amanda Treharn; and Jamie Garrod. Julie Basissta and Leelee Marucci, cousins of the bride, were junior bridesmaids, and flower girls were Skyla and Annaliese Rothaar, also cousins of the bride.

The attendants’ dresses were champagne and blush.
