CHS seniors participate in 37th annual Civic Day By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
The 37th annual Civic Day, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Canfield, took place with 39 Canfield High School juniors and seniors assuming the roles of city, township and school officials on May 5. The day was organized by Canfield High School government teachers Todd Muckleroy and Mike Pavlansky and provided the students an opportunity to become familiar with the workings of their local government. Each student was assigned an official from Canfield City Council, Canfield Schools or Canfield Township to shadow during the day. For example, Taryn Rothbauer took over the role of Mayor Bernie Kosar, Sr., Sara Rogers took over the role of City Manager Joe Warino, Mirabella Mangie took over the role of Clerk of Mayor’s Court Lynda Seabrook, Dean Cutrer took over the role of Fire Chief Donald Hutchison, Emma Kadilak took over for Township Trustee Brian Governor, Jill Baker assumed the role of Township Fiscal Officer Carmen Heasley, Abi Hursh took over the role of School Superintendent Alex Geordan, Ben Shapiro took over the role of CVMS Principal Judd Rubin and Chris Morchak assumed the role of Resource Officer Steve Garstka. Civic Day started at the Canfield Local Schools Board Office where the students conducted a mock school board meeting with their official counterparts. The school officials helped the students understand how a school board meeting is conducted and explained policies and procedures for the meeting. The students then took a tour of Canfield Village Middle School and were given a tour of the police and fire stations. The students walked over to the Canfield Municipal Building where they were welcomed by Mayor Kosar who gave them

an overview of City Council meetings and city government. “Welcome to Council chambers. We live in a city which follows a charter form of government, and has since about 1968 or 1969. In a charter government, a city manager runs the city. What that means is we have a weak council and mayor. Everything goes through the city manager. If necessary, we take a message from someone who has a concern or an issue and then pass it along to the city manager. It is an excellent form of government. Very efficient,” Mayor Kosar said. Mayor Kosar also stressed to the students that the City of Canfield practices transparency. “The City of Canfield practices and stresses transparency. We have no secrets. The students were coached through a council meeting, complete with motions, questions from meeting attendees, discussions, roll call, debates and banging of the gavel. Toward the end of the meeting, a motion was made to provide the absence of final exams for Canfield High School seniors. After a second, the motion was put to a vote, the majority ruled in favor of the motion. Mayor Kosar thanked the students for visiting Council Chambers. “I just have to say that this mock City Council meeting actually went a lot smoother than a real Council meeting,” Mayor Kosar joked. The students then traveled to the Canfield Township Hall where a mock trustee meeting took place. To close out the day, the Rotary Club of Canfield had a luncheon for the students and city, township and school officials at St. Michael’s Church.

Valley seniors honored at scholarship breakfast By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
A recognition breakfast took place to honor the recipients of the J.L. Francis Scholarship, First Place Community Fund, at A La Cart Catering on May 12. The breakfast was organized by the Mahoning County Educational Service Center on behalf of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, which manages the First Place Community Fund and disperses the moneys for the scholarship. Twenty-two students, one from each public high school in Mahoning County, as well as Choffin Career Center, Ursuline and Cardinal Mooney, each received a $500 college scholarship. These individuals were honored for their dedication to service, while maintaining a high level of achievement in their high school studies. MC E S C Sup er i nt endent Ronald Iarussi welcomed the scholarship recipients and their guests to the program. “Good morning everyone. Thank you for coming. On behalf of our governing board and employees, welcome to our scholarship breakfast. This breakfast is an opportunity to us to get to know the students from our partner school districts. We are very proud of each student. It is nice to see the focus of these students here today. And to their parents, we know how proud you are of them, too.
Congratulations to each award recipient,” Iarussi said. After breakfast was served, Casey Krell, director of supporting organizations and donor services of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, spoke to the large audience. Kim Davis, MSESC director of teaching and learning, Iarussi and Douglas Hiscox, MCESC assistant superintendent, awarded the students their scholarships. Paula Roberts, MCESC instructional supervisor, provided closing remarks. Canfield High School senior Braxton Madison, son of Adelle and Stacy Madison, was a scholarship recipient. Madison was chosen from among the top 10 students in the CHS graduating class. He will attend Georgia Institute of Technology in the fall. “It’s an honor to be chosen to receive this scholarship. The Canfield graduating class is a competitive class. The other students in the top 10 had amazing acts of service and were very involved in school activities. To be chosen as the scholarship recipient winner out of that group of individuals is definitely an honor,” Madison said. In administering this scholarship, the Mahoning County Educational Service Center is able to support the youth of Mahoning County in their pursuit of continuing education. The recipients have successfully met the grade point average requirements and have also
demonstrated a commitment to their schools and communities through volunteer service and involvement during their high school years. The J.L. Francis Scholarship was established during the 2005-06 academic school year for schools in Mahoning
County by the First Place Bank and the First Place Bank Community Foundation. Before his death in 2005 from ALS, Jeffery L. Francis served as Chief Operating Officer of First Place Bank and the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the First Place Financial
Corporation. His hard work and dedication inspired the creation of this scholarship. In 2014, the First Place Community Foundation fund was transferred to the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley which maintains a 50 year tradition of supporting continued education.

Students at Hilltop Elementary School had their own day designated just for them during the school’s annual PTO-sponsored Student Appreciation Day on May 12. All students were treated to a bounce around party and enjoyed hand-spun blue cotton throughout the day. The students were split into small groups and visited a bounce house, an inflatable obstacle course and a giant inflatable slide.
The bounce-a-rounds were set up in the playground area and when the whistle blew, the students moved onto their next station. Their last stop was the cotton candy table, where they were served the blue treat. Several PTO volunteers, coordinated by PTO President Julie Miller, helped with the event throughout the day. “This day is to show our appreciation for our great students, and it’s also a benefit of them having a successful fall fundraiser,” Miller said.

The student inductees were
escorted by their parents into the auditorium and each student was introduced to an auditorium filled with fellow students, friends and family. They were greeted by Canfield Local Schools Superintendent Alex Geordan and building principal Michael Moldovan. As the students were introduced, Canfield High School National Honor Society coadvisers Tim Wensel and Steve Pitts greeted each one and presented them with the National Honor Society gold medal, which was placed around their neck. Students then crossed the stage and signed the membership book. Current senior members of the society spoke on the four Pillars of the National Honor Society. Alexis Page spoke on Character, Hamzah Hassan spoke on Leadership, Kate Hartshorn spoke on Service and Carson Markley spoke on Scholarship. “Character is who you are when no one is around. When no one is around to judge, we are wonderful people. Sometimes, when people are around to judge, we can become not so wonderful,” Page told the inductees during her speech, after which she lit the candle for Character. While speaking about leader-
ship, Hassan told the students they need to seize their opportunities. “Leaders are like tigers, ready to pounce on opportunities presented to them. Leaders do not demand respect, but you end up giving it to them anyway,” Hassan said, after which she lit the candle for Leadership. Hartshorn told the students Service is not limited to volunteer hours. “Service is not limited to volunteer hours or the service projects we stress over. It’s how you live every single day. It is understanding you are not the center of the universe,” Hartshorn before lighting the candle for Service. In his speech about Scholarship, Markley told the students scholarship creates hardworking people. “Education, in its very essence, makes the world go round. Effort is necessary for academic success. Scholarship creates hardworking people,” Markley said before lighting the candle for Scholarship. Steve Hlaudy, Canfield High School physics teacher, was the guest speaker for the ceremony. We are all a piece of something. We all need faith. Family is who you are and who you are going to become. You learn how to act and how not to act from your family. Hlaudy then spoke directly to the NHS inductees. “Congratulations. You are on this stage because of scholarship. You deserve heavy praise. Congrats for being here. You deserve it. I have a challenge for you. The Scholarship Pillar is about you. The other three Pillars are about others and can be lumped together. Your chal-
lenge is to find someone to help, which won’t directly benefit you. Put that on your ‘To Do’ list. Be selfless in serving others. There are two things you need to know. You need to know what help they need and you need to fill that need. You are already changing Canfield High School and if you all do this, you will change the world,” Hlaudy said Pitts then addressed the audience. “It is so rewarding to see these students excel and accomplish so much through hard work and dedication. I would also like to give the parents, grandparents, teachers, staff and all those involved in these students’ lives who helped them achieve this accomplishment,” Pitts said. Pitts then awarded the Leadership and Service Award to senior Kate Hartshorn. “Leadersh ip a nd ser v ice come naturally to Kate. She is one of the first to volunteer with a smile. She has completed multiple service projects. I have seen her grow from a quiet sophomore to a great leader,” Pitts said. The new inductees were then led in the National Honor Society Pledge for Membership, after which they received a standing ovation from their parents, grandparents, friends, classmates and teachers. After the ceremony, inductees and guests enjoyed a reception in the cafeteria which included cookies, fresh fruit, pastries, punch and coffee.
Valley businesses and individuals who have effectively transformed their workplaces from high-risk cultures to safety-driven environments funded and supported by executive management. Canfield Schools received Honorable Mention. The award is named in honor of Joan Kovach, a long-time safety advocate and owner of City Machine Technologies, Inc., until her death in 2006.
