Library guests solve hula homicide By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

More than 80 people used their best detective skills to solve the murder of Winnie Waheli during the Murder in the Library: Hulas and Homicide program at the Poland library on May 11. This is the third year that librarian Jen Kuczek has hosted a Murder in the Library program. Each year there is a different theme of murder and dozens of people come to listen, interrogate and see who the murderer really is. The suspects in the mystery are played by volunteers who mostly work for the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. The volunteers dress for the part and are given a background on the character they are playing.

“I’m thrilled with the turnout. I think we had like 85 people come,” said Kuczek. Guests came dressed in their best Hawa iia n outf its a nd were given a lei as they walked through the doors. Many people who came to the program came with their friends ready to solve the murder. The guests sat at tables together and prepared to hear statements from the suspects. The program started out with all of the suspects giving their stories and alibis about what had happened during the night of the murder. The guests were Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci given paper to take notes on Guests interrogated suspects during the Murder in the Library: Hulas and and after the suspects gave their Homicides program on May 11 at the Poland library. statements, clues and newspaper articles were given to each of the tables to help. guests were given the opportunity to ask questions to try and figure out who did it. At the end of interrogations, the guests wrote down who they thought did it, why the person did it, how the murder was committed and what made them come to their conclusion. “During the last two programs, we had about five or less

guess the right answer,” said Kuczek. When the program came to an end, the guests found out that Hanna Hobart, played by Nicole DiPiero, was the murderer. Three awards were given, one for first place, one for second place and one for whoever was furthest away from the correct answer.

DAWG Day promotes health and wellness at Dobbins By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Dobbins third- and fourthgrade students were encouraged to do, act, wonder and grow for the second annual DAWG Day on May 5. The day was designed to promote health and wellness in a fun way. Students were asked to think about their personal choices and how they affect their growth and daily life. “It’s a health and wellness promotion, teaching the importance of physical activity, smart nutrition choices. We try to focus on different safety aspects

too,” said Cathy Fedor, school nurse. The committee of the program was Fedor, Food Service Director Barb Walko and parent coordinators Maureen Rothrauff, Theresa Rapp, Jill Knez, Heather Kollar and Juliann Tukalo. Representatives from Akron Children’s Hospital, Dr. John’s Family Dentistry, Western Reserve Joint Fire District and district employees hosted several different stations for the students to attend and do an activity while learning about health and wellness. Students had the opportunity

to talk to Erin Gabriel, a Poland and University of Tennessee alumnus, about her softball career and her education in the Department of Nutrition. All of the students got a photo with Gabriel and the Poland Bulldog mascot as a way to remember the occasion. “The students get a folder

at the end of the day that has hand-outs that correspond to each of the stations so hopefully they take it home to discuss with their families,” said Fedor. Poland Seminary High School student-athletes volunteered their time to help at each of the stations. The Dobbins students jump roped, tried to juggle, did

cup stacking, relay races and several other physical activities. DAWG Day is something that both the students and staff of Dobbins and PSHS have fun participating in. It’s a program that the school hopes to continue to host and bring awareness to health and wellness in a fun and active way.

The Mahoning Valley Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution gathered at Davidson’s restaurant in Cornersburg on April 22 to celebrate Patriot’s Day. Patriot’s Day marks the 242nd anniversary of the battles of Lexington and Concord, which took place on April 19, 1775. Highlights of the program included an address by Ron Smith and Patricia Sexton co-founders of the traveling “Wall,” which comprises 100 feet of panels, designed and commissioned to honor the men and women of all wars from the Revolution to the War on Terror. They summed up their effort by saying ”the Spirit of America’s Story wants to kindle America’s sense of patriotism, ignite our respect for those who wear uniforms and bring us all together as a country.” Ohio State Treasurer and Northeastern Chapter President Steve Hinson visited with the Mahoning Valley chapter and presented Fort Lauren coins to Smith and Sexton for their patriotic effort on behalf of veterans. President Phil Bracy introduced Dan Matheke, Secretary for Northeastern Chapter, who administered the oath welcoming Russ and Christopher Wentz as new members

At the same time, John Opre will serve as chair for a recruitment effort in Columbiana County. Bracy went on to thank both Troy Bailey and Dan Matheke for all their efforts helping orga-

nize the Chapter last year. The Sons of the American Revolution is a historical, educational and patriotic organization. The purposes of the society are to maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom, respect for National symbols, appreciation for true patriotism, the values of American citizenship, the unifying force of e pluribus unum that was created from the people of many

nations, one nation and one people. Its members are male descendants of people who can document ancestry to those who served in the Revolutionary War, or who contributed to establishing the Independence of the United States.
