Meet Howard, a very loving cat. He is about 2.5 years old and absolutely adores everyone he sees. He was a stray with Entropion in both eyes so it must have been hard for him on the streets. He since has had surgery and is doing fine. Even though he is a favorite at West Side Cats, Howard would really be happy in a home with someone else to love him. He does great with children and other cats, but no one knows how he would do with a dog, but he may like it. Howard is laid back and peaceful. He came in to the shelter on March 18, so he is past ready to be adopted.
Here is Snickers with his ball at Pawz 2 Adopt in Austintown, OH. Snickers started out at the Trumbull County Pound and now has been at Pawz for about a year. Snickers is such a wonderful dog! I just LOVE him as does everyone else there! We really hope that Snickers gets a home of his own very soon! You can either PM on Pawz 2 Adopt on their Facebook page or call 330-779-1862. Thanks from Snickers!

Students ride bikes to raise awareness By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Pola nd Nor t h P reschool hosted a Trike-a-Thon on May 6 to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Students spent the morning riding their bicycles and scooters around the parking lot to bring awareness to St. Jude’s. There were times when only the girls or boys rode, and each class took a turn riding with their classmates. “We tell them to bring a bike or a tricycle, whatever it is, that they can manage very well,” said Joy Bucci, a teacher at North Preschool. The students started collecting money for St. Jude’s in April. All of the money raised will be donated back to St. Jude’s. The program raises awareness to
St. Jude’s while also teaching bike safety and allowing the children to get in some exercise at the same time. Samantha Cox, the transitional kindergarten teacher, had a special connection to this event and St. Jude’s. Her sister was admitted to the hospital and was happy to be a part of an event like this. “If the parents don’t have any money to go, they don’t ever get a bill, they’ll never see a bill. When my sister went, they were given a room and board and food, she didn’t have to pay for anything,” said Cox. The St. Jude’s website has a list of what the money helps with. The list has prices of what different treatments cost so people know how their money is helping when they donate.

All of the students gathered together at the end of the Trike-a-Thon on May 6 to take a group picture with their bicycles and scooters at North Preschool.
The students rode their bikes for about a half hour before they finished and went to their classes to start the day. Many of t he students were worn
out by the end of their Trikea-Thon, but enjoyed the time they spent outside. “It’s for a really good cause. Kids helping kids,” said Bucci.

Rich Center receives large donation from MCCTC students By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Rich Center for Autism received a generous donation on May 12 from students who attend Mahoning Country Career and Technical Center. Kayla Windsor, Rachel Perkins and Ty Cook, students from MCCTC, decided to have a book drive for their Honors English class project. The students were divided into groups and had to come up with a community service project that involved donating their time, volunteering and
receiving items for donations. “We chose to do a book drive because I like kids and everyone was mutual on what we wanted to do,” said Windsor. The students decorated boxes and spread them out around the Poland, Struthers, Boardman, Lowelville and West Branch areas. The boxes were out from April 11-30, in honor of National Autism Awareness Month. “They have been piling up in my living room, almost to the ceiling,” said Windsor about the boxes full of books. Windsor, Perkins and Cook
contacted the Rich Center and asked if they would be willing to partner with the students for the fundraiser. The Rich Center received over $2,700 worth of toys, 558 books and $50 worth of monetary donations. After bringing in all of the donations, the MCCTC students had the opportunity to visit the students, read to them and play with them and their new toys. “Thank you to everyone who donated books and a huge thank you to Maui Toys. They’re the ones who donated all the toys.” said Windsor.

Sky high kite flying at Mill Creek MetroParks By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Mill Creek MetroParks hosted its annual Kite Fest on April 30 at the Wick Recreation Area. The sky was filled with several different colors, shapes and designs of various kites that people brought and came to look at for the festival.
Mill Creek MetroParks partnered with Ohio Society for the Elevation of Kites to help create the event. Members from the society brought their expertise in kite flying to the park. The event was open to the public for people to watch the kites and fly their own. The giant field was open for guests to fly their kites without having to worry about run-
ning into one another or having multiple kites get tangled. Children ran trying to fly their kites as the parents watched and tried to help. One of the favorite objects among the children was a giant bubble machine. People lifted up wands that were dipped into the bubble solution and huge bubbles blew in the wind. Many of
the children chased the bubbles and tried to pop them. The children could also participate in other crafts that Mill Creek MetroParks provided. There were supplies to create your own kite and create other sky crafts. The event lasted for five hours and several people attended to watch from afar and to take part in flying their own kite.

Mothers get gift of music from preschool By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Poland North Preschool students put on a performance for their mothers and grandmothers on May 4. Joy Bucci and Terry Wittenauer’s classes have been working hard to prepare a special morning for their mothers and grandmothers to participate in. The guests entered the library to watch the students perform a few songs to start off the morning. After the students finished
their performances, the mothers and grandmothers were brought back to the classrooms for muffins and refreshments. The students in Bucci’s class sang the songs they have been practicing to show their guests. As the performance came to an end, the students got pictures with their mothers and grandmothers before they headed back to the classroom. Once the students and their mothers returned to the classroom, the mothers opened the presents their child made for them. Bucci
and her class used plain white pillowcases and decorated them to give to their mothers as a Mother’s Day gift. Wittenauer’s class made flowers out of construction paper to use as a prop in their last song and then gave them to their mother as a Mother’s Day gift. The students had a last minute practice before the guests showed up to make sure their performance would turn out perfectly. “I’m very proud of them, they did a good job,” said Bucci.

There was a 50-50 raffle where the proceeds benefited the Animal Charity and Pawstown of Boardman Park. Although the Mutt Mingle was free and open to the public, a dog park membership is needed if someone wishes to bring their dog to the park any other time. The event gave information to those who may have been interested in becoming a member after attending the event.
