ABWA chapter to meet on June 11 The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its June 11 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield, beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu for the evening will include southern baked chicken, stuffed shells, redskin potatoes, Italian vegetable blend, tossed salad, pickled beets, Jell-O, dessert, coffee and tea. The cost is $18 per person. The speaker for the evening will be Melissa Smith, owner of 1820 House Candles in East Palestine. She will speak about how she runs her online business and prepares the scents for her candles.

Cardinal Mooney High School announces summer camp series Cardinal Mooney High School has announced their summer camp series. All camps will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown, and range in age from kindergarten through eighth-grade.

Friendly Squares June square dance The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on June 8 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center. Rex Parker will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. Father’s Day will be the theme. This will be a plus dance. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Spay and neuter clinic offers local event Alleycat Spay and Neuter Clinic will be coming to the Austintown Ohio area for additional dates for its low cost spay/neuter transport program. Alleycat’s transport van will be transporting patients to and from Tractor Supply Austintown, located at 6225 Mahoning Ave. in Austintown, on July 3 and Aug. 7. The drop off time is between 8:30-9 a.m. and the pick up time is between 3:30-4 p.m. (Clients will pick up and drop off patients to our staff members at the Tractor Supply parking lot). Clients will be required to provide proof of a current rabies vaccination for their pet, otherwise they will be required to receive a new rabies vaccine during their clinic visit (rabies vaccine at time of surgery is $9). One pet per crate, and the crate should be a hard carrier. The cost for a female cat spay surgery with transport is $60. The cost for a male cat neuter surgery with transport is $50.

Microsoft Excel Class 1 Learn the basics of using Microsoft Excel for creating simple and useful spreadsheets at this event at the Austintown library on June 14 at 10 a.m. This beginner’s class will cover setting up a spreadsheet and entering data.

Fifth-graders celebrate end of the school year

Austintow n Intermediate School’s graduating fifth-graders celebrated the end of the school year with Fun Day. On May 30, fifth-graders at AIS spent the day indoors enjoying a break from school work before the end of the year.

School Principal Angel Owens

said that the fifth-graders celebrate Fun Day last so that theirs is closest to the end of the year.

“We want them to have a lot of fun, and to close out their time at AIS with great memories,” Owens said.

During the event, fifth-graders were broken into groups, cycling through a number of stations.

Austintown Bounce provided a variety of bounce houses for

students to play on during the event.

St udent s raced t h roug h bounce house mazes, battled during a last man standing game and bounced on exercise balls.

Music played through speakers in the gymnasium, with students dancing throughout the room.

A number of parents and PTA volunteers were also present at

the event.

Students also wore matching T-shirts that represented their grade.

Owens said that throughout the last two weeks of school each grade is given a day for their Fun Day events.

Fifth-graders were the last grade to participate, wrapping up Austintown’s school year at the end of the week.

Read It Before You See It book club People always say the book is better than the movie. This book club will get together to read and discuss books that are soon to be released in the theaters. The next event will take place on June 13 at 7 p.m. at the Austintown library and will discuss “Good Omens” by Neil Gaiman.

Italian Fest looking for nominations The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2019 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and the Italian Woman of the Year. Library celebrates rainy days

Community members embraced the spring rain during the Michael Kusalaba library’s Rainy Day event on April 24.

Librarian Amelia Dale organized the event for children ages 2-5.

“This is like read and make except we have a couple more games and the chance to win some prizes,” Dale said.

During the event, children listened to Dale read a couple of books about rain.

Dale read “Mushroom in the Rain” and “Boom, Big Big Thunder and One Small Dog”.

Though the weather that day was bright and sunny, Dale said that the event was a way to prepare for the rain to come.

“April is spring, and in the spring that when the rain comes,” Dale said.

Children also sang along with Dale to “Ten Little Umbrellas” and used scarves to dance along with the songs.

Dale also organized a game of picture bingo for children to play with prizes available to the winners.

Finally, children ended the event by creating a rainbow craft to celebrate the beauty that comes from the rain.

“Rain is good, because of the rain the flowers can grow, we can see rainbows, it’s not a bad thing,” Dale said.

Austintown Park hosts annual Kite Festival

Austintown Park welcomed in spring with the ninth annual Kids Shine for a Cure Kite Festival on April 28.

The event was organized by Brenda Rider with the A Way With Words foundation.

“It was just a fun event we all had a great time during the day,” Rider said.

Community members gathered at the park from 12-4 p.m. for the event that was free and open to the public.

During the event, every child in attendance received a free kite.

Rider said they gave away more than 300 kites during the event.

“We ran out of pre-made ones less than 30 minutes in,” Rider said. “It ended up being huge.”

Community members were able to enjoy the park and try their hand at flying a kite to enjoy the spring weather.

Kids Shine for a Cure sold concessions during the event, the proceeds of which benefited the group.

Representatives from Home Depot were also present, offering a free craft for children to create and take home with them.

AMS teacher and students honored at annual event Austintown Middle School teacher Michelle Best spoke at the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation’s 26th annual Community Holocaust Commemoration event on May 2, about the importance of introducing Holocaust-based themes and lessons in the classroom. To her surprise, she was not only there to speak about Holocaust education, but was recognized for her work as a Holocaust educator.

“Lessons of the Holocaust are just as relevant today as they were 20 years ago, and dare I say, even more important. Our voices may be the only thing we have to stand up for injustices that we see happening around us,” Best expressed during her speech.

The Rev. Peter Haladej presided over the exchange of vows between Catherine Carney and Matthew English during their wedding at 1 p.m. Oct. 20, 2018, at Holy Family Church in Poland.

Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Hall in Boardman was the setting for a reception that evening in honor of the couple.

The bride is a daughter of Michael and Susan Carney of Poland. Mark and Mary English of East Liverpool are the groom’s parents.

The bride wore an ivory lace gown with a column silhouette. It was designed with off-the-shoulder sheer lace sleeves, a deep sweetheart neckline and a cathedral-length train accented with organic-edged lace. Her ensemble was completed with an ivory fingertip veil.

Carolyn Carney, the bride’s sister, was maid of honor. Bridesmaids, wearing burgundy dresses, were Allison English, sister of the groom; Anna Reed; Annalise Walkama; Vivien Clayton; Emma Buzas; and Taylor Conrad.

The groom’s brother, Evan English, served as best man. Zack Cowan, Quintin Steele, Greg Munoz and and the bride’s brothers, Patrick, Michael and Stephen Carney, were groomsmen.

Mr. Blasko married the former Pat Zelonish on May 16, 1959, at St. Brendan Church in Youngstown.

Mrs. Blasko worked for Ohio Bell until 1960 and is a homemaker.
