Hilltop fourth-graders experiment with science By ABBY SLANKER aslanker@vindy.com

Hilltop Elementary School fourth-grade students brought out their inner scientist for the school’s annual Science Fair on May 24. The students exhibited their experiments and results for family, friends and fellow students in the school’s gymnasium. The students worked on their projects while being guided step-by-step by their fourthgrade teachers. Each student was required to conduct a scientific experiment on a topic that interested them and was then required to create a display board describing their experiment. Each display included the project’s problem to be solved, the student’s hypothesis, the materials used, the procedure of the experiment, the results and a conclusion in which the student stated if his or her hypothesis was correct or incorrect and what he or she had learned from the experiment. Students could also include photos of themselves conducting their experiment, charts, diagrams, illustrations, histograms and graphs on their dis-

Mill Creek Park hosts annual Children’s Reading Festival By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

Mill Creek Park in coordination with the public library hosted the annual Children’s Book Festival on April 27. Samie Winick, who organized the event, said that this is the 13th annual book festival and this year’s theme was reading is my super power. “We have a superhero theme going on, but we also have the idea of every day heros,” Winick said. She said that many local heros from the area attended the event as guest readers including the Fire Chief Barry Finley, a deputy sheriff and Youngstown Mayor Jamael Tito Brown. “It’s the idea that not every hero wears a cape,” Winick said. Along with guest readers the event featured a variety of authors and illustrators with their books. Lindsay Ward, author and illustrator of “Brobarians” and Keith Allen author and illustrator of “What a Mess” were present at the event. “It’s a lot of fun coming out here and enjoying the day,” Allen said. “I love connecting with people who enjoy my work.” A variety of story tellers both local and across state lines traveled to the event according to Winick. “We have a lot of support, it’s a great event,” Winick said. Children in attendance also got a visit from Alpha Pig from the television show Super Why! Peter Porker, a baby potbelly

They were also able to make a variety of superhero themed crafts and play games throughout the event. The event provided prizes and supplies for children to make paper plate shields, paper bag puppets and more. “There is a lot to do here, we plan for a lot of people,” Winick said. Children were also introduced to the artist Yayoi Kusama through her book “Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors”. Community members were able to recreate her famous art piece Infinity Mirrors by plac-

ing stickers on a white cardboard set up outside the park. “It’s a cool way to introduce kids to art and books,” Winick said. Audia told the students service looks different to everyone. “Service looks different to everyone. There is no one right way to serve your community. But how you got there is more than good grades. These students are constantly pushing themselves further, bettering themselves with the knowledge of the world around them. They will continue to push and strive for greatness and their achievements will only grow as they move on with their lives,” Berlin said before lighting the

Jennings told the students to live by the rule of be good to each other. “Be good to each other. This is my ultimate goal for this year. To be good is to constantly seek knowledge. To be good is to listen to each other and talk to each other and be honest. It’s okay to make mistakes. It’s okay to look to the people around you for help. So, don’t forget to be good to each other,” Jennings said. Ruark then addressed the audience. “These students have met and surpassed the requirements to be inducted into National Honor Society. They have spent countless hours

studying, taking notes, playing sports, acting in plays, yet they gave their time to help others,” Ruark said. Ruark thanked the people who helped the students along the way. “Thank you to the parents, grandparents, special friends, teachers and faculty who have helped, loved and encouraged these students to become the people they are today,” Ruark said. Ruark awarded the Leadership and Service Award to senior Claire Berlin. “Over the past four years, Claire has accumulated more than 150 hours of community service,” Ruark said. served over 900 meal and piloted the After School Haven program. Please join me in thanking the seniors,” Ruark said. He addressed the inductees. “To the juniors, it is a privilege and honor to be a member of National Honor Society. With this honor comes great responsibility. Simply, when you find a need in life, fill it,” Ruark said. Ruark led the new inductees in the National Honor Society Pledge for Membership, after which they received a standing ovation from their parents, grandparents, friends, classmates and teachers. “Congratulations, I now present to you the newest members of the Canfield National Honor Society Chapter,” Ruark said.
