Tri-Gold Prime Time Chapter ABWA celebrates anniversary The ABWA Tri-Gold Prime Time Chapter celebrated its 14th anniversary on April 11 at A La Carte Catering in Canfield. The evening was highlighted by honoring the 2018-2019 Chapter Woman of the year, Sarah Janutolo. Janutolo has been a ABWA member for 43 years with perfect attendance for 39 years. She has served as a past president for seven years and is the chapter’s current education chairman. She has been past president of the Mahoning Valley ABWA Network Council and is currently holding the office of vice-chairman. She is retired from Mahoning County Jobs and Family Services, where she worked in the business and accounting office. Perfect attendance awards were presented by Doris Almasy, Membership Chair, to Lena Pilla, Sarah Janutolo, Delores Brindle, Mary Ann David, Doris Almasy, Mary Lou Murray, Sharon Pasquale, Mary Fran Rish, Elena Nigro, Jolyn Bush, Dolly Sonnenlitter, Kay Meyers, Dianne Guthrie and Pat Pero. Entertainment was by Angelo Lamarco and Black Horse.

Principal Thomas Lenton served with Austintown Elementary School for 19 years and said being principal was a calling for him, and working at the school was the culmination of that calling.

Students and staff honor retiring principal

Au st i ntow n E lement a r y School honored their principal on his last day before entering retirement on May 29.

The PTA organized the “clap out” with the staff of the school.

The students and teachers clapped for principal Thomas Lenton as he walked past. He shared hugs with many of the school staff members as the students sprayed him in silly string.

“I am speechless and overwhelmed by the thoughtfulness of the staff, PTA and the boys and girls at the school,” said Lenton, with a smile on his face. He spent 19 years with the school system and said he was “blessed to be here.”

The PTA and teachers snuck the students out of the school using the side and back exits while Lenton was in a meeting. He walked out to students lined up all around the building thanking him for his time

as principal. Many of the staff members spoke highly about him.

“It’s been the best part of my career,” said Lenton. He referred to working with the school as the culmination of a calling where he truly knew that he belonged. He said he is grateful for having the opportunity to serve as principal at the school.

In addition to having his students, Lenton’s daughters and grandson surprised him at the

school. They embraced him as he turned the first corner. The PTA invited them to the event to make it even more special for Lenton.

“He’s been the greatest person to me and my children,” said Bethany Martinez, the PTA president, “He deserved a proper send out.”

The event took place on the students’ last day of school.

They had their celebration at the end of the school day and got ready to leave after.

On May 14, the Austintown Lions Club had a speaker’s night with King Lion John Susany presiding. Serving as speaker was Detective Sergeant Rob Whited of the Mahoning Valley Drug Task Force. Guests included Austintown Lioness Club members, Lions’ spouses and friends. Whited delved into the problems of drug trafficking including the dealers, themselves, and the aftermath of those addicted to drugs which sometimes includes death. He listed drugs themselves that are the most damaging and most prominent, and how they are obtained. The winners from the Austintown Schools third, fourth and fifth grades made posters with the theme “Police are my heroes.” Approximately 320 students participated in this contest.

The Austintown Optimist Club has sponsored this event for the last three years and thanks the poster contest committee of Bill Lowery, Lynn Larson and Joann Sulenski for their time and efforts in making this project a success. The Austintow n K iwa nis Club had their trivia night in the Austintown Middle School’s cafetorium on April 27 to raise money for the group.

Different community members formed several teams that competed throughout the night.

Teams included people of all ages, ranging from a team of veterans from the area to students in the high school’s Key Club.

Past president Mario Sallee said the night was a fun fundraiser to have a good time and support the club. In addition to this fundraiser, they also had a pancake breakfast in March to raise money for their group.

They will use the funding to-

ward projects that help students. Sallee said that the group serves students and children, whether that means helping the schools or making donations to the township park.

The teams had ten questions per round and two minutes to answer them. Each round centered around a singular theme, such as breakfasts and “tool time.” A panel of judges, including president Diane Fry and trustee Ken Carano, scored the teams’ answers.

The club offered a veggie tray, cookie table and pizza, as well as numerous other treats from different members, for the teams. They also had a 50/50 raffle, which raised money for the group.

CLASSIC ROCK CONCERT SERIES 2018

The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on June 9 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles.

Ed Pabst will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances between the tips. This will be a high/ low dance with tips for new dancers and tips for more experienced dancers. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. announced for summer The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley recently announce that it is bringing back and tripling its summer day camp options for children with special needs and their neurotypical friends. Three weeks of two styles of camp will be offered. Dates include June 18-22 (integrated camp for ages 6-13), July 30 until Aug. 3 (full camp and integrated camp for ages 3-22) and Aug. 13-17 (integrated camp for ages 6-13). Camp Friend is unique because the student-to-counselor ratio is extremely low and unmatched to address the intense needs of children and teens on the autism spectrum. As a result, every year interested applicants had to be turned away for lack of enough space. The addition of integrated camp will allow ASMV to serve more families by offering more camper spots. Integrated camp will provide the opportunity for higher-functioning individuals to attend a traditional day camp with our counselors there to assist as they have ideal chance to strengthen their social skills. Concert choir gives special performance

The Austintown Fitch concert choir performed a selection of songs that they sang during their trip to New York this year.

The special concert, “The Music of Eric Whitacre,” in the Fitch auditorium on April 30 covered songs that the group performed in the prestigious Carnegie Hall on April 8. The students sang songs mostly composed by Whitacre, who conducted the group at Carnegie Hall.

“It was a humbling experience,” said choir director Bill Klein about performing at the hall under Whitacre. The school was one of 15 groups selected to perform during Whitacre’s concert. The concert featured in-

ternational school groups and professional choirs.

They performed the full repertoire of songs again at Fitch for the community. The concert was free and featured nine songs, plus a traditional “Amen” to close the set. Many of the songs were in another language. The program given at the event translated the songs for the attendees.

For Klein, the difficult part was not singing in another language but the difficulty of the songs. He said most of the songs, outside of two, were college level difficulty, including John Mackey’s “Rumor of the Secret King,” which he called “the hardest piece of music I’ve ever come in contact with,” during the concert.

Klein said he wanted this performance to close the chapter on the Carnegie experience and refocus the group on the mission of the choir, “to serve those who have served.” While in on their trip, they visited the Community Living Center, the mental health clinic and a nursing ward at the Lyons Veteran’s Hospital in New Jersey to perform for the veterans.

The group always performs at a veteran’s hospital at least once during the school year.

They also sing at Fitch’s assembly and dinner for veterans.

During the concert, several students spoke about why they enjoy performing for the veterans and how rewarding the experience is for them.

POLICE REPORTS May 15 Burglary: To an apartment in the 1500 block of Fountain Square Drive, from which a .380-caliber firearm was taken.

Recovered property: A set of keys was found in the 5500 block of Colgate Drive.

Overdose: Officers responded to a reported drug overdose in the 2400 block of South Raccoon Road. A man was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

Theft by deception: Authorities investigated a short-change scam at Marc’s, 4755 Mahoning Ave. May 16 Arrest: The Portage County Sheriff’s Department in Ravenna called police to pick up James E. Cominsky, 47, of North Four Mile Run Road, Austintown, who was wanted on a warrant accusing him of failing to appear in Austintown Area Court on a disorderly-conduct charge.

Assault/theft: A South Raccoon Road woman alleged her boyfriend had assaulted her. Also, a 9 mm firearm was reported stolen.

Criminal damaging: A portion of a lawn in the 2300 block of Birch Trace Drive sustained damage.

Menacing: An Oakwood Drive resident reported having been threatened via social media.

Theft: A vehicle in the 200 block of South Meridian Road was found with a missing license plate.

Drugs: After pulling him over on Mahoning Avenue, authorities handed a minor-misdemeanor citation to Rhodell S. Franklin Jr. of Palmer Avenue, Youngstown.

Franklin, 24, had a bag of suspected marijuana, a mason jar with the remains of suspected marijuana and two additional mason jars with suspected marijuana residue, a report showed.

Fraud: An Idaho Road resident reportedly became a victim of a scam in which a caller claims a computer is infected with a virus or malware and tricks the victim into buying gift cards to pay for unnecessary services or products, or to obtain personal information.

Unauthorized use of a vehicle: A New Road woman said her father’s rental car was taken without permission.

May 17 Arrest: Police responded to a report of a man asleep in a dump truck in the 1700 block of South Raccoon Road, where they charged Jon M. Jordan, 55, of Baymar Drive, Youngstown, with operating a vehicle impaired. Jordan registered a 0.251 blood-alcohol content, which is more than three times Ohio’s 0.08 legal intoxication limit, a report stated.

Theft: Various auto parts were stolen from Universal Paint LTD, 3681 Connecticut Ave. Theft: A license plate was stolen off a trailer in the 3500 block of Orchard Hill Drive.

Theft: A short-change scam was reported at Chipotle Mexican Grill, 5553 Mahoning Ave. May 18 Arrest: Officers were dispatched to Austintown Area Court to take into custody Qwon D. Dow, 22, of Upland Avenue, Youngstown. He was wanted on a warrant charging domestic violence.

Child endangerment: Police received a report that a 9-year-old child was left alone at home near North Edgehill and Mahoning avenues.

Arrests: Authorities arrested Brenna R. Clark, 18, of Devon Drive, Warren, upon discovering she was wanted on a Niles

Municipal Court warrant charging one felony count each of forgery and theft.

Also taken into custody was Cody M. Kale, 25, of Carnegie Avenue, Austintown, on an aggravated-menacing charge when, an officer alleged, he overheard Kale threaten to kill Clark’s boyfriend.

Theft: A check was removed from a vehicle in the 100 block of North Kimberly Avenue.

May 19 Criminal damaging: A report was filed in the 100 block of North Edgehill Avenue, though it contained no details.

Criminal damaging: Kenneth W. Porter, 29, of North Navarre Avenue, Austintown, faced a criminal-damaging charge after a relative alleged Porter, who was apparently upset about a separate incident, tossed a broken torque wrench at and damaged the rear of the accuser’s Buick vehicle.

Theft: A cellphone was stolen in the 400 block of South Edgehill Avenue.

Theft: Authorities charged Theodaysha P. Wiley of Baylor Avenue, Austintown, after alleging Wiley, 27, had stolen seven pairs of women’s shoes and a pair of earrings valued at a total of $426 from the J.C. Penney store, 6000 Mahoning Ave. May 20 Recovered property: A wallet was found in a New Road laundry facility.

Theft: Michael A. Capito, 38, of Burkey Road, Austintown, was charged with stealing two packages of chicken-breast tenders from Giant Eagle, 5220 Mahoning Ave., then was given a criminaltrespassing warning.

May 21 Drugs: Officers in the 4800 block of Westchester Drive charged Kathryn M. Unick, 27, with one felony count of heroin possession after having arrested her on other charges. Unick, of Meadowbrook Avenue, Boardman, admitted having in a folded piece of paper inside of a wrapper 1 gram of suspected heroin for which she paid $35 to $40, authorities alleged.

Breaking and entering: Power equipment was missing after someone had broken into Jon Auto Sales, 1213 N. CanfieldNiles Road.

Burglary: To a home in the 3800 block of Cannon Road, from which a wristwatch and an iPhone were stolen.

Theft: Shaun M. Binion, 40, of Rosewood Drive, Warren, was charged with stealing three fishing reels valued at $103 from Walmart, 6000 Mahoning Ave. Theft: An item was taken from a yard in the 4200 block of Woodmere Drive.

May 27 Arrest: Officers answered a call about two males with baseball bats in the 100 block of North Navarre Avenue, then arrested Matthew T. Spaite, 32, of Forest Garden Drive, Boardman, upon discovering Spaite was wanted on a Boardman Area Court warrant charging theft.

Drugs: Suspicious activity off Mahoning Avenue drew officers’ attention before they charged Anthony L. McCormick, 27, of Mahoning Avenue, Austintown, with drug abuse (cocaine), possessing drug paraphernalia and drug abuse (marijuana). Found were a white powder that tested positive for cocaine, a suspected marijuana cigarette, a bag of suspected cocaine and a straw commonly used for drug purposes, a report showed.

Possible theft: A license plate was lost or stolen off a vehicle in the 1300 block of Mulberry Run Drive.

Fraud: A Yorktown Lane resident noticed about $319 worth of unauthorized credit-card charges.

Theft: A man reportedly stole a TV from the JCPenney store.

Austintown Fitch honored the veterans in the community with a military night during the school’s baseball game against Boardman on April 30.

Before the game began, both teams walked out and stood with some veterans. The Fitch pep band, under direction of Wes O’Connor, stood on the field near second base. A military color guard walked to the center of the outfield and stood while the band played “The Star Spangled Banner.”

“It means a lot to give back to veterans in the community because they do a lot for Austintown schools,” said principal Chris Berni.

The veterans received free pizza and coupons upon entering, in addition to the dedication to them before the game.

“Can’t ask for anything better,” said veteran Jeff Gulling, who said the night was a great honor, as always with the school’s veteran events.

Berni noted that the veterans participate in all military events that Fitch has throughout the year and were instrumental in creating funds for the school’s Purple Star Project, which schools in Ohio apply to be selected as a military friendly school. Fitch has created a Purple Star Room in the school to honor all branches of the military.

Second graders become historical figures for project

The Austintown Elementary School’s second-grade classes began their Wax Museum projects on May 2.

The classes invited their parents to the school for a presentation. The students dressed up as figures from history and recited a speech when someone pressed a button in front of the student, like in a wax museum.

The students all chose a historical figure on which to do their project. They researched and wrote about the person and then came in to school dressed as the historical figure.

Before the presentation with parents, they practiced with younger classes in the school so they could see the project.

“The most important part, to me, is that it is student led and project based,” said Jacquelynne Moretti, a second grade teacher. The students led their own research and came to their own findings about a

person from history.

The students represented both long-standing history, with people such as Babe Ruth and Harry Houdini, and recent history, with J.K. Rowling, and more. Moretti organized the museum into different groups, such as “Women in History,” which featured women like Betsy Ross and Rosa Parks, and “Science,” with scientists such as Jane Goodall and Albert Einstein.

Danica Stanley, who dressed as Goodall, said she chose to represent her because she likes animals. She enjoyed giving the presentation and learning about the different people from history, but her favorite part was practicing with the younger students.

All the second-grade students have done t he project since moving to the new school. The project meets the standards for social studies and science and gives the students an interesting way to learn about history.

Richard Patrick Rosen of Boardman and Courtney Nolan of Westlake were married Aug. 12, 2017, at Santa Catalina Rosary Chapel in Monterey, Calif. An evening reception took place in the historic ballroom in Club Del Monte at Monterey Naval Postgraduate School.

The newlyweds were honored at a local reception hosted by the groom’s parents at Our Lady of Mount Carmel social hall Sept. 23, 2017.

The bride is a daughter of Robert and Nancy Nolan of Marina, Calif.

Richard and Dianna Rosen of Boardman are the parents of the groom.

The bride wore a white, strapless gown with a sweetheart bodice and chapel-length train. Soft beading on Alencon lace on tulle completed her look.

Amy Senk was the matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Heather Osher, Jessica Hyduk, Tami Villa, Mackenzie Brown, Kristen Sorbo, Michelle Villa and Melissa Rosen, sister-in-law of the groom. Kinsley and Laila Senk and Brynn Rosen, niece of the groom, were the flower girls.

The attendants’ dresses were royal blue.

Mrs. Rosen graduated from the University of Dayton with a bachelor’s degree in biology. She also received her medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pa. She is practicing pediatrics at the Cleveland Clinic.

Mr. Rosen graduated from John Carroll University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in business management technology. He is a sales representative for Keurig Dr. Pepper.

The couple honeymooned in Hawaii and reside in Strongsville.

Maggie Vinopal, Brian Slavens Jr. plan July vows Charles and Marianne Vinopal of Boardman and Brian and Kathleen Slavens of Poland are announcing the engagement of their children, Maggie Vinopal and Brian Slavens Jr., both of Boardman.

The wedding will take place at 1 p.m. July 7 at St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown. Invitations will be issued for the ceremony and for a reception to take place that evening at The Embassy in Youngstown.

The bride-elect graduated from Walsh University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She graduated from Ohio State University with a master’s degree in that field. She is a neonatal nurse practitioner at Akron Children’s Hospital in Boardman.

The prospective groom earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing. He is a nurse at Mercy Health in Youngstown.

Hanleys observe their diamond anniversary Martin and Mary Ann Hanley recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary during a private dinner at Nicolinni’s that was hosted by their daughters, Mary Kathleen and Maureen Hanley.

The Hanley’s are the parents of nine children which include Mary Kathleen Hanley (Nick Melfi) of Liberty; Marty Hanley of Columbus; Maureen Hanley of Hubbard; Michael (Joyce) Hanley of Lowellville; Matthew Patrick (Lisa) Hanley of Dayton; Mary Frances Hanley of Lowellville; Jennifer (Craig) Froomkin of Liberty; Suzanne Hanley of Lowellville; and Gregory Hanley of Cleveland.

Twelve grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren complete their family.

Mr. Hanley married the former Mary Ann McCulloch on April 26, 1958, at St. James Church in Altoona, Pa. Mrs. Hanley worked as a 2-D echo technician for St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, Dr. Saalouke, Dr. Hoffman and North Side Hospital until retiring

in 2013. She is a member of the Good Hope Lutheran Church in Boardman.

Mr. Hanley was a boilermaker and welder for Youngstown Sheet & Tube until he retired in 1986. He also was a maintenance technician at Choffin Career and Technical Center from 1987 to 1989.

Mr. and Mrs. Pompeo will be honored in June POLAND

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Pompeo of Poland will be honored in observance of their 60th wedding anniversary at a family dinner in June.

The couple’s children are Gina (Don) Gossick, Troy, Mich.; Julie (Neil) Bell, Winter Springs, Fla.; Albert (Darlene) Pompeo, Poland; and Joseph (Lisa) Pompeo, also of Poland. They also have nine grandchildren.

Mr. Pompeo married the former Anna Vaccariello on June 4, 1959, at St. Nicholas Church in Struthers.

Mrs. Pompeo was a seamstress for Moyers Pants Factory and The Garment Center in Youngstown until she retired in 2000. She taught catechism for 30 years, and played bocce and was part of a bowling league.

Mr. Pompeo was a pipe fitter for LTV Steel until he retired in 1986. He was an area umpire for 50 years and a member of the Pacentrano Club, St.

Anthony Club and Bocce and Morra leagues.

The couple are members of Holy Family Church in Poland, where Mr. Pompeo has served as an usher.
