Butler takes second at bee Eighth-grader Brendan Butler, a student at Boardman Glenwood Junior High School, competed in the National History Bee in the US Geography Olumpian in Atlanta, Ga. June 1-3.

He finished second out of the top 156 eighth-graders in the nation. He also finished 60th out of the top 256 eighthgraders in the nation in the National History Bee.

Tri-Gold Prime Time Chapter ABWA celebrates anniversary The ABWA Tri-Gold Prime Time Chapter celebrated its 14th anniversary on April 11 at A La Carte Catering in Canfield. The evening was highlighted by honoring the 2018-2019 Chapter Woman of the year, Sarah Janutolo. Janutolo has been a ABWA member for 43 years with perfect attendance for 39 years. She has served as a past president for seven years and is the chapter’s current education chairman. She has been past president of the Mahoning Valley ABWA Network Council and is currently holding the office of vicechairman. She is retired from Mahoning County Jobs and Family Services, where she worked in the business and accounting office. Perfect attendance awards were presented by Doris Almasy, Membership Chair, to Lena Pilla, Sarah Janutolo, Delores Brindle, Mary

Recycled record art The combination of music and art will be explored by using vinyl records as your canvas to make a new piece of art with paint and collage materials at the Boardman library on June 27 at 7 p.m.

All materials will be supplied. This event is for tweens and teens.

Game night for adults Play the hand you’re dealt of cards (Rummy), dice (Farkle) and Scrabble on June 28 at 7 p.m. at the Boardman library. Bring a friend or two and join the group. They meet on the fourth Thursday of the month for snacks and bragging rights in this one-hour program for adults.

Square Dance event on June 9 The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on June 9 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles.

Ed Pabst will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances between the tips. This will be a high/low dance with tips for new dancers and tips for more experienced dancers. Students Leadership Challenge 2018 In celebration of his more than 50 years in martial arts, Master Park is offering a “Students Leadership Challenge 2018.” Park has been training and instructing martial arts to all ages for more than five decades in the United States and Korea.

He has witnessed and proved that more than 90 percent of students became more successful academically, physically and mentally when participating in martial arts instruction. This year, 3-8 students will be selected from each school building location of 10 local school districts from across the Mahoning Valley. Schools participating are Boardman, St. Charles, Poland, Holy Family, Canfield, South Range, Austintown, Cardinal Mooney High School, Ursuline High School, St. Christine, Western Reserve, West Branch, Columbiana, Springfield and Lowellville. A scholarship will be available to those who are chosen for 1-3 months of 1-hour classes twice per week. To apply, you must have at least a GPA of 2.5 or higher. You must submit a form and two recommendations from a teacher or parent. Students are required to follow the rules and regulations.

No experience is required. Individual and corporate sponsorships are also available at the following levels: listing sponsor $100; silver - $300; gold - $500 and platinum - $700. Stadium Drive celebrates the end of the school year

Stadium Drive Elementary gave their students a day of play on May 24 as a way to celebrate the end of the school year.

They school organized 10 activity stations for the children.

Teachers and parent volunteers ran the stations and watched the students. Physical education teacher Kendal Daltorio set up the stations and planned the event.

“It’s a heathy way to have fun,” said Daltorio. She wanted the school to have fun together.

The third- and fourth-grade students went outside for the event first. They had two and a half hours for their field day.

The kindergarten, first and second grades had their field day in the afternoon for two hours.

The activities included four bounce around stations from Boardman Bounce and a water relay game. They also played on the playground and in the

school’s gagapit. They had two break stations: one where the children ate popsicles and another where they had their faces painted in the shade.

Daltorio organizes many of the same events each year, but she likes to add a couple different stations each time. This year, she added the water relay, where the students took turns placing a sponge in water and squeezing it into a two liter bottle on another student’s head.

Each team competed to see who

could fill up the bottle the most.

Both groups of students had a special activity. The third- and fourth-grade students competed in tug-of-war and the kindergarten through second-grade students played parachute games.

The school has the event every year at the end of the school year. They plan for two days in case the first day is rained out.

Daltorio has organized the activities each of the last eight years.

POLICE BLOTTER May 20 Arrest: Police were dispatched to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital to pick up Carly C. Zinni, 22, of Lockwood Boulevard, Boardman, who faced charges of assault on a police officer, obstructing official business, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct while intoxicated after authorities had responded to an argument between a passenger and an Uber driver, who alleged Zinni had urinated in his vehicle. After being returned to her apartment, an intoxicated Zinni shoved an officer and fought with police, they alleged.

Auto theft: A 2006 Ford Explorer was stolen from a driveway in the 100 block of Overhill Road.

Theft: A $599 laptop computer and a checkbook case were taken from a car in the 4100 block of Windsor Road.

Breaking and entering: A Brookfield Avenue woman discovered someone had entered her garage then removed a $250 bicycle and a book bag.

Stolen property: Youngstown police relinquished custody of Surgeo D. McMullen, 28, of Mable Street, Youngstown, who faced a felony receiving-stolen-property charge, related to a Feb. 27 incident in which a man reported six recording microphones had been taken from the basement of his Glenwood Avenue home. The loss was calculated at $3,398.

Theft: Armando A. Calderon, 34, of Lansdowne Boulevard, Youngstown, was charged with theft, resisting arrest and obstructing official business after $90 worth of vodka, groceries and household goods was stolen from Walmart, 1300 Doral Drive. Police twice had to use a stun gun to bring a combative Calderon under control as he struggled and refused to comply with them, they alleged.

Trespassing: A Hudson Avenue couple told police someone came onto their property and tried to enter their vehicle.

three domestic-violence counts and one of criminal trespassing after he reportedly was in a woman’s home in violation of conditions of his bond.

The woman also alleged Julien had threatened to kill her and their two sons, causing the accuser to fear for her safety and that of the children, a report showed.

Theft: A Canavan Drive man discovered a $19 gazing globe had been removed from his front yard.

Theft: Jina M. West of Devitt Avenue, Campbell, was charged after authorities alleged West, 39, intentionally failed to self-scan $29 worth of body spray and other merchandise while in Walmart.

May 21 Arrest: Youngstown police handed to township authorities Ronald J. Adams, 20, who listed addresses on Windsor Road in Boardman and Harold Lane in Campbell, and who was charged with complicity to improperly discharge a firearm at or into a habitation, a second-degree felony. Earlier this month, officers responded to possible gunfire near Cook Avenue before reportedly finding two bullet holes in and two shell casings near an apartment complex in the 800 block. No one was injured, however.

Bad check: A worker with a West Boulevard hair salon reported a woman wrote a $70 check for services rendered that was drawn on a closed account.

Theft: An employee for Altiere’s Home & Garden, 8415 South Ave., told authorities a man in a truck that was pulling a trailer dumped a load of brush and debris, then left without paying the $35 fee.

St. Charles hosts health and safety fair

The seventh-grade at St. Charles School presented a health and safety fair for the first-grade on May 18 in the school gym. This project is a collaboration of The Works of Mercy in religion, health and public speaking in English. Students worked in groups of three or four to present mini lessons to the first-grade students. Topics included fire safety (home and outdoor), water safety, stranger danger, healthy eating, keeping active (exercise), healthy heart, getting lost and safety in the sun. On that day, the firstgraders traveled in small groups and visited each station. The students enjoyed fun activities in each station that helped them understand the importance of each topic. It was a fun morning for both the first- and seventh-graders. All of the students’ smiles indicated that the fair was a success.

Ryan Marlin, Livestock Account Manager from Eye Catching Corals was a guest speaker on May 8 for Boardman High School’s Oceanography class, as well as several Biology classes. Marlin is a 2011 Graduate of Boardman and told students his passion for his job today, started there. Eye Catching Corals is located in Vienna and it is the leading supplier of a corals across the country. Marlin told students he now has the opportunity to work his dream job and his interest was first peaked when he was the President of “Underwater Spartans” at Center Middle School, and through classes like Oceanography at BHS. Marlin graduated from YSU in 2015, and also spoke about Eye Catching Corals as a business and how it relates to the economy.

Cadets honored

High school and college cadets from northeast Ohio’s JROTC and ROTC units were honored at a recognition dinner at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station on May 10 by the Mahoning and Shenango Valley Chapter, Military Officers Association of America (MSVC-MOAA). The chapter previously made award presentations at the cadets’ individual school ceremonies in late April, but this evening was a chance to bring all of them together with their families and instructors. Air Force JROTC Cadet Hannah Wareham and Army JROTC Cadet Javier Rodriguez were honored as MOAA Junior ROTC Achievement Award winners. Each received a medal, certificate and an honorarium. Youngstown State University Army ROTC Cadet Derek Kozlowski received the MOAA ROTC Medal and a $300 cash award. Honored jointly with the Reserve Officers Association (ROA) were newly commissioned Second Lieutenants Zachery Gibson and Zachary Szewczyk, who both graduated from YSU on May 5. MOAA and ROA provided each officer with uniform shoulder boards and copies of The Army Officers’ Guide. MSVC has supported junior and college-level ROTC at Trumbull Career and Technical Center, East High School and Youngstown State University since its formation in 2011. Led by JROTC/ROTC Committee Co-Chairs retired Army Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Roderick Hosler and retired Navy Commander (CDR) David J. Di Tallo, both of Boardman, chapter members make classroom visits and attend cadet-led ceremonies throughout the school year. LTC Hosler is a past Assistant Professor of Military Science at YSU and MSVC member retired Army Major (MAJ) Patrick (“Rick”) Williams currently serves as YSU’s Director of the Veterans Service Center. Pink Ribbon Tea

The 24th annual Junior League of Youngstown Pink Ribbon Tea will take place at noon on Aug. 20 in the Stambaugh Auditorium Ballroom. Doors will open at 11 a.m. The tea was initiated in 1994 to unite women of our area who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and to honor and celebrate them. The 2018 Pink Ribbon Tea committee cochairwomen are Pam Nock of Austintown and Susan Stewart of Boardman. Continued from Page 4 Breaking and entering: Someone broke into a shed in the 700 block of Indianola Road and removed a $2,500 riding mower and accessory.

Burglary: To an apartment in the 4000 block of Glenwood Avenue, from which a pair of women’s shoes and a makeup bag were stolen, and a microwave oven was damaged.

Breaking and entering: Surveillance footage reportedly showed a man in his 40s wearing a red baseball hat and a black pair of pants and jacket with a T-shirt underneath throwing a rock at and breaking a front-door window before entering Family Dollar, 4026 South Ave. Stolen was about $179 worth of merchandise.

Burglary: Took place in the 5300 block of Linger Place, where a garage door was forced open. A jewelry box, a leaf blower and a weed trimmer were stolen.

Breaking and entering: Someone reportedly removed an air-conditioning unit from a window, then broke into Creative Corner Learning Center, a day care facility at 1463 Shields Road. Nothing seemed to be missing, though a man in black clothing was reportedly seen on surveillance footage opening cabinet doors.

Misuse of a credit card: A Canfield woman discovered her stolen credit card was used to make about $1,536 worth of fraudulent purchases at several township stores.

Arrest: After pulling her over in the 5100 block of Market Street, police took into custody Dominique L. Dodson, 29, of West Delason Avenue, Youngstown, upon ascertaining Dodson was wanted on a warrant accusing her of failing to appear in court on a driving-under-suspension charge.

Assault: An official with Paul C. Bunn Elementary School, 1825 Sequoya Drive, alleged having seen a bus driver placing a 12-year-old student in a chokehold after what may have begun as a confrontation between the driver and the student.

The victim alleged the driver had earlier choked him, and he complained of neck pain, a report showed.

Attempted fraud: A Beechwood Drive woman reported a caller who claimed to represent the U.S. Social Security Commission and to have her Social Security number tried to get the accuser to provide additional personal information before she hung up.

May 22 Arrest: Police arrested Trent A. Marcum, 22, at a Market Street motel after learning that Marcum, of West Pine Lake Road, Salem, was wanted on a Columbiana County felony warrant charging inducing panic.

Arrest: While dealing with a fight between two family members in the 800 block of Moyer Avenue, police arrested Breyonna J. Moore of Catherine Avenue, Youngstown, on charges of domestic violence, assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, obstructing official business and violating a protection order. After reportedly threatening to kill her father, Moore, 25, flew into a rage upon authorities’ arrival, used both feet to kick at an officer and continued with her turbulent behavior after her arrest, a report stated.

Harassment: Officers at Boardman Area Court on Market Street booked Jason M. Sop, 22, who listed addresses on Erie Street in Boardman and Julian Street in Youngstown, and who faced a telephoneharassment charge after a township woman alleged that in March, Sop made a series of threatening calls and sent her derogatory text messages after the accuser stated she had corresponded with Sop on Facebook but later indicated she did not want to date him.

Theft: A Midgewood Drive man reported an envelope containing two Cleveland Indians tickets was removed from his mailbox.

SATURDAY, JUNE 9, 2018 26, of Birch Trace Drive, Austintown, on a theft charge, related to a May 12 situation in which a Youngstown woman reported that while at a Doral Drive big-box store, someone stole two $150 wheel caps off her car.

Domestic violence: A 17-year-old Boardman boy was charged with the crime after his grandmother alleged the teen had raised his fist in a threatening manner, causing the accuser to believe he would hit her, in what apparently started as an argument related to clothing that had been taken from another family member.

Theft: Molly E. St. Clair, 34, of Elm Street, Struthers, faced a felony charge after $1,868 worth of jewelry, clothing and other items was stolen from Kohl’s, 383 Boardman-Poland Road.

Theft: A township woman noticed her $800 iPhone missing while she was at a business in the 4900 block of Market Street.

Fight: Police responded to a possible fight in the 3700 block of Market Street between two males, one of whom reportedly fled on foot from officers.

Identity fraud: A South Avenue woman discovered $6,277 worth of fraudulent transactions dating to March on several bank-account statements.

Incident: Three males reportedly abandoned an all-terrain vehicle in the middle of the road in the 30 block of Arlene Avenue before fleeing the area on foot.

26, who was wanted on a theft charge.

Jackson, of Arlington Street, Warren, was accused of stealing 18 articles of clothing valued at $187 earlier this month from T.J. Maxx, 717 Boardman-Poland Road.

Theft: A man reportedly stole $29 worth of flowers and alcoholic beverages from Giant Eagle, 476 Boardman-Canfield Road.

May 23 Arrest: Police in the 8500 block of Market Street picked up Arnold D. Harding, 60, who listed Youngstown addresses on Mahoning Avenue and East Midlothian Boulevard.

He was wanted on a criminal-trespassing warrant.

Assaults: A Youngstown man and his 17-year-old brother alleged that while mowing a lawn in the 400 block of Ewing Road, their former employer assaulted them. The accuser alleged the former boss spit on him then tossed a gas can at and struck him; the younger sibling alleged having been grabbed and nearly thrown to the ground, leaving scratches to the affected area.

school with their teacher, professor Paulina Montaldo.

“I saw a need for the Spanish students to learn the cultures they studied,” said Montaldo. She said the most important thing is that the event brings students and families throughout the community together.

The Labra Brothers Band began the performances on the stage in the cafeteria. Following their set, a dancing groups from Slippery Rock University, local dancers and members of the Spanish Club danced. The Ursuline students learned dances of folklore to represent Columbia, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Spain. Slippery Rock professor Melissa Teodoro brought in the university’s AfroCubian Dance Ensemble for several dances. Local students Hannah Balash of Poland Seminary High School and Alexander Bell of James A. Garfield High School also performed a few dance selections. The club created a cultural display for the visitors of the event to learn about other cultures. The students researched cultures of countries, such as Peru and Columbia, for the display. Montaldo also invited Kester’s Krias Alpacas to the event for the visitors.

“I look forward to it every year.

I’m proud of their hard work,” said Maggie Matune, assistant principal of Ursuline High School. She said the she loves seeing so many cultures represented and embraced by people of all ages.

The event brought in approximately 450 visitors to the school.

They received funding for the fiesta from Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, which they used for authentic Mexican dresses.

The Boardman library invited author and accomplished hiker Jennifer Pharr Davis to the library to speak on April 19.

Pharr Davis spoke about her book, “The Pursuit of Endurance: Harnessing the RecordBreaking Power of Strength and Resilience.” She delivered not only her stories of growing up and hiking, but she also shared the stories of other notable hikers. She focused on the Appalachian Trail, which she completed in the then fastest known time in 2011.

“My greatest adventure is motherhood,” said Pharr Davis near the end of her presentation. She wrote the book while pregnant, which she explained was a challenge.

She started with the question of why people want to go on challenging hiking adventures.

She believes that people have a primal urge to be in nature, as people had been largely outside most of the time for most of the history of humanity, whereas we spend most of the day inside now.

Another reason often has to do with emotional change. She took a class on preparing for the Appalachian Trail before she hiked it for the first time at the age 21. Her instructor, professor Warren Doyle, has hiked the trail 17 times. He explained that the preparation has less to do with physical strength and more

Her book includes passages about other hikers, and she talked about a few of them and read passages from her book about them. She talked about Doyle,

David Horton, Scott Williamson and Heather Anderson.

After the presentation, she did a short question and answer portion of her presentation, including a question about her “trail name,” a nickname given to hikers on the trail. She is known as “Odyssa,” a feminine take on Odysseus from “The Odyssey.”

She sold her book and previous books after and autographed them for the attendees.

Her other books include “Called Again” and “Becoming Odyssa.”

Amstutz and Dunham briefs head to Regionals after Mooney golf team hosts fundraising scramble victory at Districts

On June 9, there will be a Cardinal Mooney golf team fundraiser scramble at the Mill Creek Golf Course.

Check-in starts at 12 p.m. for a 1 p.m. shot-gun start. The cost to participate is $75 per person or $300 per team. The cost includes lunch and dinner. Hole sponsorships are available for $50 per hole and 50/50 and raffle baskets will be available.

May 26 Arrest: Officers made contact with a suspicious man in the 20 block of Boardman-Canfield Road before taking Mel’Quan N. Patton, 26, into custody. Patton, who listed addresses on Glenwood Avenue in Boardman and 13th Street in Campbell, was wanted on a Campbell warrant charging him with failure to comply with terms or conditions of his probation.

Theft: Authorities picked up Tina M. Fizet of Homewood Avenue, Hubbard, who was being housed at the Mahoning County jail. Fizet, 39, faced a theft charge, related to a Feb. 3, 2016, shoplifting situation in which $250 worth of cosmetics was stolen from Ulta Beauty, 403 Boardman-Poland Road.

Theft: A man reportedly took a $30 bottle of herbal capsules from Tobacco City LLC, 110 Boardman-Poland Road.

Burglary: To an apartment in the 800 block of Cook Avenue, possibly through a rear window.

A woman came home to find that clothing in a closet had been disturbed, though it appeared nothing was missing.

Theft: Someone removed a battery-powered sprayer, a weed trimmer, a bottle of bleach and detergent from Home Depot, 7001 Southern Blvd.

Drugs: Police obtained a search warrant for an apartment in the 800 block of Cook Avenue, where they reportedly found a plastic container with drug paraphernalia and a suspected crack-cocaine pipe in a bedroom after having responded to a possible overdose at the address. No one was home at the time and no arrests had been made at the time of the report, though.

The Boardman boys track team will sent two athletes to the 2018 OHSAA Regional Championship after finishing eighth overall at this year’s District Championship at Fitch High School.

Spartan senior Steven Amstutz qualified to the regional meet by placing first overall to become the 2018 OHSAA NEO District Champion in the shot put with a throw of 53 feet 1.5 inches. Joining Amstutz will be sophomore Mitchel Dunham who qualified for the regional by becoming the 2018 OHSAA NEO District Runner-Up in the 1600 with a time of 4:31 .

Theft: Carrie Pasquale, 42, of Banbury Drive, Boardman, faced a charge. She was accused of stealing about $303 worth of clothing from Kohl’s.

May 27 Arrest: Officers answered a call about an erratic driver near Mathews Road and South Avenue before charging Charles T. Cialella, 27, of Delaware Avenue, Poland, with obstructing official business and citing him on a charge of disorderly conduct while intoxicated after alleging Cialella had refused to cooperate and tried to walk away from police.

McCullough, 21, of Idlewood Avenue, Youngstown, with trafficking in drugs, a felony, after alleging having found two bags that contained individually packaged bindles with a powder that tested positive for cocaine. Also arrested was Patrick R. Braxton, 22, of Shadyside Drive, Boardman, who was wanted on a warrant.

Attempted breaking and entering: Someone cut through a security gate in an effort to break into Zales Jewelry in Southern Park Mall, though no entry was made. Security footage showed two suspicious men walking in the area beforehand, a police report stated.

Criminal damaging: A car’s passenger-side window was smashed in the 100 block of Lemans Drive, resulting in a $150 damage estimate.

Domestic violence: Zachary M. Tallman, 19, of Glenwood Avenue, Boardman, was charged with the crime after his mother alleged Tallman had spit on her, then threatened to kill the accuser and a family pet.

Theft: A resident in a South Avenue long-term care facility discovered $50 had been removed from a drawer in his room.

Freshman Micah Beckwith earned All-Ohio honors in three seated events at the OHSAA State Championship at Jesse Owens Stadium on the campus of The Ohio State University. Beckwith became the first seated athlete in the YoungstownWarren Area to compete at the state meet in the seated events. Beckwith began the weekend on the morning of Jan. 1 by placing seventh overall in the seated shot put with a career-best throw of 10 feet 8.75 inches. On Jan. 2, Beckwith placed eighth overall in the seated 800 in a career best time of 3:01 dropping 11 seconds from his previous best effort. Later that day he placed ninth in the seated 400, missing All Ohio honors by less than 0.3 seconds with a career best time of 1:23.5 - a drop of more than 2 seconds from his season best. Arrest: A traffic stop on Brookwood Road led to Joshua N. Kale’s arrest after police ascertained Kale, 37, of Forest Park Drive, Boardman, was wanted on a warrant charging him with failing to appear in Boardman Area Court on Market Street.

Auto theft: A 2010 Ford Escape was stolen from a driveway in the 3900 block of Windsor Road.

Theft: Two women in their 20s reportedly stole $1,028 worth of cosmetics and other items from Ulta Beauty.

Harassment: A Trenholm Road man said he’s received dozens of such text messages that included insults and profanities.

Theft: A man reportedly stole $10 worth of candy from Family Dollar, 4030 Market St. May 29 Arrest: Officers received a 911 call about a man who had passed out and fallen in a parking lot at an East Midlothian Boulevard discount store, then charged Robert P. Burton, 56, of West Parkside Drive, Boardman, with one felony count of operating a vehicle impaired.

Burton, who refused to submit to a breath test, had 54 driving suspensions and has had no valid driver’s license since 1984, a report stated.

Animal complaint: A Shelby Road man said a neighbor’s untethered dog defecated in his yard, something the complainant said was part of an ongoing issue with the neighbor.

Arrest: While responding to a two-car crash in the 1100 block of Shields Road, police charged Melzia J. Sugick, 54, of South Schenley Avenue, Youngstown, with operating a vehicle impaired. Results of a urine test were pend-

ing, a report said.

Identity fraud: A Glenwood Avenue man discovered someone had accessed his bank account and made at least seven unauthorized withdrawals and transactions that added up to $19,013.

Violation of a court order: A township woman reported her former boyfriend sent her a threatening text message while she was at a family member’s home, in violation of a protection order.

Possible burglary: A woman returned to her Terrace Drive residence and discovered someone may have tried to break in through a window, then tried to enter via a rear door that activated an alarm. Nothing appeared to be missing, however.

Theft: A nurse with The Vein Center and Medspa, 965 Windham Court, discovered an $82 bottle of a skin-care product missing from a locked display case.

Harassment: A Southern Boulevard woman alleged her former husband has made 31 such calls to her, including some with threats of physical harm.

Threats: A Glenwood Avenue woman alleged her daughter’s father had made and sent threatening calls and text messages, causing the accuser to fear for her safety.

Theft: Authorities at Boardman Area Court booked Rebecca L. Starling, 42, of SodomHutchings Road, Cortland, on a theft charge, related to an Aug. 15, 2017, situation in which the owner of The Pita Wrap, 4721 Market St., alleged having seen Starling, who was an employee in training at the time, on surveillance footage opening a drawer where his wallet was kept. The accuser also discovered three checks and an undisclosed sum of money missing from it, a report showed.

Theft: Police picked up Joseph J. Gibbons, 22, at Boardman Area Court and booked him on a theft charge after three $325 security systems were stolen April 21 from Walmart.

Cardinal Mooney plans summer camp series

Cardinal Mooney High School has announced their summer camp series. Dogs provide therapy at Beeghly Oaks

Beeghly Oaks Center for Rehabilitation and Healing invited therapy dogs to their facility on April 14 to interact with the residents.

Traci McCoy, recreational director, brought the dogs in to excite the residents. Sit Means Sit Mahoning Valley reached out to Beeghly Oaks to help the dogs with their training.

“It’s very therapeutic for [the residents]; they love it,’ said McCoy. She had a few residents come out of their rooms to enjoy the dogs in the hallway. She asked all the residents if they wanted to see the dogs, and she noted each of the rooms the dogs were allowed to visit.

The stop at the rehabilitation home was one of many visits the dogs made throughout the day.

They trained for eight hours to receive certification. They train for movement, on things like escalators, public behavior, such as behaving on a bus, and therapy. The organization brought 19 dogs to the event.

Those who received training become part of the international Sit Means Sit Go Team, which brings dogs to different areas of the world that could use their services. For example, the Go Team brought dogs to Parkland, Florida after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and to areas in Texas affected by Hurricane Harvey. They have approximately 860 dogs internationally.

Melissa Simko, owner and trainer of Sit Means Sit Mahoning Valley, led the group. She opened the Mahoning Valley chapter three years ago.

Also at the event was Nancy Trepagnier, the creator of Sit Means Sit. She started the group in 2012 in Colorado with just two dogs. They helped victims of a wildfire in Colorado.

Simko said that not all of the dogs involved in the training would become certified. Each year, the certified dogs have to recertify through training. All of the dogs belong to the owners and the organization will train any type of dog.

Richard Patrick Rosen of Boardman and Courtney Nolan of Westlake were married Aug. 12, 2017, at Santa Catalina Rosary Chapel in Monterey, Calif. An evening reception took place in the historic ballroom in Club Del Monte at Monterey Naval Postgraduate School.

The newlyweds were honored at a local reception hosted by the groom’s parents at Our Lady of Mount Carmel social hall Sept. 23, 2017.

The bride is a daughter of Robert and Nancy Nolan of Marina, Calif.

Richard and Dianna Rosen of Boardman are the parents of the groom.

The bride wore a white, strapless gown with a sweetheart bodice and chapel-length train. Soft beading on Alencon lace on tulle completed her look.

Amy Senk was the matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Heather Osher, Jessica Hyduk, Tami Villa, Mackenzie Brown, Kristen Sorbo, Michelle Villa and Melissa Rosen, sister-in-law of the groom. Kinsley and Laila Senk and Brynn Rosen, niece of the groom, were the flower girls.

Mr. Rosen graduated from John Carroll University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in business management technology. He is a sales representative for Keurig Dr. Pepper.

The couple honeymooned in Hawaii and reside in Strongsville.

Maggie Vinopal, Brian Slavens Jr. plan July vows Charles and Marianne Vinopal of Boardman and Brian and Kathleen Slavens of Poland are announcing the engagement of their children, Maggie Vinopal and Brian Slavens Jr., both of Boardman.

The wedding will take place at 1 p.m. July 7 at St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown. Invitations will be issued for the ceremony and for a reception to take place that evening at The Embassy in Youngstown.

The bride-elect graduated from Walsh University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She graduated from Ohio State University with a master’s degree in that field. She is a neonatal nurse practitioner at Akron Children’s Hospital in Boardman.

The prospective groom earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing. He is a nurse at Mercy Health in Youngstown.

Hanleys observe their diamond anniversary Martin and Mary Ann Hanley recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary during a private dinner at Nicolinni’s that was hosted by their daughters, Mary Kathleen and Maureen Hanley.

The Hanley’s are the parents of nine children which include Mary Kathleen Hanley (Nick Melfi) of Liberty; Marty Hanley of Columbus; Maureen Hanley of Hubbard; Michael (Joyce) Hanley of Lowellville; Matthew Patrick (Lisa) Hanley of Dayton; Mary Frances Hanley of Lowellville; Jennifer (Craig) Froomkin of Liberty; Suzanne Hanley of Lowellville; and Gregory Hanley of Cleveland.

Twelve grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren complete their family.

Mr. Hanley married the former Mary Ann McCulloch on April 26, 1958, at St. James Church in Altoona, Pa. Mrs. Hanley worked as a 2-D echo technician for St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, Dr. Saalouke, Dr. Hoffman and North Side Hospital until retiring

in 2013. She is a member of the Good Hope Lutheran Church in Boardman.

Mr. Hanley was a boilermaker and welder for Youngstown Sheet & Tube until he retired in 1986. He also was a maintenance technician at Choffin Career and Technical Center from 1987 to 1989.

Mr. and Mrs. Pompeo will be honored in June POLAND

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Pompeo of Poland will be honored in observance of their 60th wedding anniversary at a family dinner in June.

The couple’s children are Gina (Don) Gossick, Troy, Mich.; Julie (Neil) Bell, Winter Springs, Fla.; Albert (Darlene) Pompeo, Poland; and Joseph (Lisa) Pompeo, also of Poland. They also have nine grandchildren.

Mr. Pompeo married the former Anna Vaccariello on June 4, 1959, at St. Nicholas Church in Struthers.

Mrs. Pompeo was a seamstress for Moyers Pants Factory and The Garment Center in Youngstown until she retired in 2000. She taught catechism for 30 years, and played bocce and was part of a bowling league.

Mr. Pompeo was a pipe fitter for LTV Steel until he retired in 1986. He was an area umpire for 50 years and a member of the Pacentrano Club, St.

Anthony Club and Bocce and Morra leagues.

The couple are members of Holy Family Church in Poland, where Mr. Pompeo has served as an usher.
