Gathering Place to have event on June 11

Canfield High School student to tour Europe

Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, will host a Gathering Place event on June 11 at 11 a.m. Anna Keck, a representative from Home Instead Senior Care, will present “Brain Games.” Lunch will again be provided by the Woodlands. A nurse from Buckeye Hospice will provide free blood pressure checks at the beginning of the program, so arrive promptly at 11 a.m.

This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens that takes place on the second Monday of the month every month.

Different games and activities are also offered each month. The contact person for these events is Bernadette Beler at 330-533-6045 or church at 330-533-3531.

Canfield High School student Rachel Beil received a clarinet spot with the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra (COYO). She is one of four clarinets. COYO is a nationally acclaimed youth orchestra and will be touring Europe in the Summer of 2019.

Knitting guild to meet on June 12 The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on June 12 at 7 p.m. at the Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. There will be a trunk show

CHS Class of 1983 to meet for reunion The Canfield High School Class of 1983 will be hosting their 35-year class reunion Sept. 1 at Kennsington Grill, located at 4171 Westford Place in Canfield, beginning at 6 p.m. The evening will include a cash bar, heavy appetizers and music playing 80’s favorites. Tickets are $50 per person. For an additional $12 classmates can purchase the group photo which will be distributed later that evening. For reservations, make checks payable to CHS Class of ‘83 and mail to P.O. Box 35 Canfield, Ohio 44406. Checks need to be received by Aug. 15. Rooms will be available at the Canfield Marriott for anyone needing accommodations. A pre-reunion get-together will take place at the Canfield Fairgrounds Grandstand on Aug. 31 with the class entering a Class of ‘83 car in the demolition derby. Mahoning County master gardener volunteer garden art series – living wreath There will be a living wreath class on June 11. Participants will learn how to make and decorate a succulent wreath. During this program, which is part of the Garden Art Series, master gardener volunteers Lil Quranta and Pam Baytos will demonstrate the use of succulents in wreath making. Topics such as succulent variety and visual appeal will be discussed. This program will take place on June 11 at the Mahoning County Extension Office, located at 490 S. Broad St. in Canfield, at 2 p.m. Registration is $20 per person. Seating is limited, so register early.

Tri-Gold Prime Time Chapter ABWA celebrates anniversary The ABWA Tri-Gold Prime Time Chapter celebrated its 14th anniversary on April 11 at A La Carte Catering in Canfield. The evening was highlighted by honoring the 2018-2019 Chapter Woman of the year, Sarah Janutolo. Janutolo has been a ABWA member for 43 years with perfect attendance for 39 years.

She has served as a past president for seven years and is the chapter’s current education chairman. She has been past president of the Mahoning Valley ABWA Network Council and is currently holding the office of vice-chairman. She is retired from Mahoning County Jobs and Family Services, where she worked in the business and accounting office. Perfect attendance awards were presented by Doris Almasy, Membership Chair, to Lena Pilla, Sarah Janutolo, Delores Brindle, Mary Ann David, Doris Almasy, Mary Lou Murray, Sharon Pasquale, Mary Fran Rish, Elena Nigro, Jolyn Bush, Dolly Sonnenlitter, Kay Meyers, Dianne Guthrie and Pat Pero. CHC third-graders learn Canfield history

C.H. Campbell Elementary School third-grade students learned about Canfield history during their day-long Canfield History Walking Tour on May 29. This is the eighth year the third-grade classes have visited many historical sites and buildings on the village green and surrounding areas.

House, Old Courthouse, Christian Church, Odd Fellows Hall, Methodist Church, the Green and gazebo, Farmers National Bank vault, Mahoning Dispatch, Township Hall, War Vets Museum, Canfield Historical Society’s Bond House, Presbyterian Church, Canfield Village Middle School, Turner School Houses, WPA Building the Old Texaco Station and Dave Goddard’s house.

At the Mahoning Dispatch, students were treated to a presentation tour and by Suzie McCabe, Canfield Historical Society president. McCabe, dressed in historical attire, gave the students the history of the Mahoning Dispatch while giving them a tour of the office, composing room and then the press room.

C.H. Campbell Elementary School third-grade students visited The Wall of Honor at the War Vets Museum during the school’s annual Canfield History Walking Tour.

Canfield Historical Society volunteer Carol Swartz was also on hand to help with the tour.

McCabe explained how the machines worked in the press room and how the walls are covered in ink from the presses.

“This linotype machine has a ration of 15 to 1. Before the machine was acquired, it took 15 men to do the same amount of work the linotype machine could do. Also, you can see a small area which I cleaned off by the door which shows the original color of the wall. What you are seeing is 100 years worth of ink on these walls. The color is not a fancy stain or paint, it‘s actually ink from the presses,” McCabe told the students.

At the other historical stops, the third-grade teachers relayed the history of the locations to the students, highlighting the Ohio Historical Markers at the sites.

The Canfield History Walking Tour was originally created

by C.H. Campbell third-grade teachers Marian Bailey and Heidi Snyder and Hilltop Elementary School third-grade teacher Jenny Beil. The teachers researched the historical stops to correlate with thirdgrade content standards, which includes learning about your community.

The Canfield Parent-Teacher Association hosted its 35th annual Academic Awards Program in the high school auditorium on May 3. The program honored junior and senior students with a grade point average of 4.01 or higher.

Canfield High School Principal Mike Moldovan welcomed t he students, families and friends.

“Good evening. Thank you for coming to the PTA Academic Awards Program. I would like to start the evening by introducing Julie Miller, Canfield PTA president,” Moldovan said.

“Good evening. On behalf of the PTA, welcome to the Academic Awards Program. We are excited and thrilled to honor these exceptional students.

There are many awards programs, but this program is the only one to honor academic excellence. We appreciate your hard work. To obtain a grade point average of 4.01 or higher is an amazing feat. You are the cream of the crop. Seniors, as you move onto the next chapter, we hope you have fond memories of Canfield Local Schools.

Continue to strive for academic excellence because you are our future leaders. Juniors, you are entering your most important year. We know you possess the qualities to succeed. You are outstanding examples for all of us,” Miller said.

Miller went on to tell the students they would receive a brand new patch to recognize their academic accomplishment.

“The PTA is committed to rewarding hard work. You all will

receive a newly-designed academic patch to display however you see fit because you are now part of an elite group,” Miller said.

Moldovan continued the program with opening remarks.

“Good evening parents and honorees. It is a pleasure to attend events which honor students at Canfield High School.

This is a special honor of academic excellence. I congratulate you. I congratulate your parents, too. It is so important to realize the support systems you have. I have never seen better parental and community support,” Moldovan said.

Moldovan continued by praising Canfield teachers.

“Our teachers work tirelessly and do a fantastic job. They work hard to build relationships with their students, which benefits all,” Moldovan said.

Moldovan then introduced Key note Spea ker Canf ield Mayor Richard Duffett.

“I am indeed honored to be here tonight. As mayor and a graduate of Canfield High School, I am proud, humbled, honored to address this group of students. My congratulations to you. We are proud of you,” Duffett said.

Duffett continued by asking the students a question.

“Where do you want to go from here? It’s an existential question, but I have a couple thoughts. It’s about you and your life and where you go and what you want to become. You did not get here by yourself.

Here at CHS, you received top

quality instruction. The foundation of intellectual success here was long established before you were born. You were smart to take advantage of a good educational opportunity,” Duffett said.

Duffett encouraged the students to help others and make a difference.

“I encourage you to get your degree and become an accomplished professional. But you can also be that someone who helps others achieve their goals.

Testimony of history is clear.

One person can make a difference for the common good. You can be that person. It’s a great time to be a Cardinal and a Cardinal graduate. Best of luck to you,” Duffett said.

David Mullane, Canfield High School Assistant Principal, then took the stage to present first the 56 seniors, and then the 50 juniors, with their Academic Awards certificates. As their name was called, each student walked to the stage, where they were handed their certificate by Moldovan.

Moldovan then handed the stage over to Philip Bova, Canfield Board of Education member.

“It is a great honor to be standing here with people I’ve taught.

It gives me great pride. This is a wonderful event. Not too many schools in the area have as many fine students as we have here.

What’s really incredible about Canfield Schools is that it’s cool to be smart. There is so much I can share with you because life is a spectrum. I walked this

path and I know some things.

I can tell you what you do next will determine the rest of your life. Go out there and build a good foundation,” Bova said.

Bova then shared some wisdom with the students.

“First, you need to know your parents are going to get a lot smarter as you get older. Decision making is important. There are so many decisions you will make that you think are small which will actually affect the rest of your life. Make good decisions. That’s so important. Always do the right thing. Don’t do something because someone is pressuring you. Most importantly, make a difference with your life. Be a positive person. Negativity destroys. Be true to yourself and don’t try to be someone else. And if you can do anything, try to stop the hate that is going on around us,” Bova said.

Bova encouraged the students to keep going even if they fail.

“You are going to fail at some point. Failing is a way of life. Get up, brush yourself off and move on. Nothing happens that can’t be fixed. Love yourself. When you start to love yourself, your life will change. Love your parents, siblings and friends. Thank you for the honor of speaking to you tonight. From the Board of Education, congratulations to you all,” Bova said.

The Canfield PTA invited the students, families and friends to the cafeteria for desserts and fellowship following the program.

“That was great. It takes a lot of nerve to get up and play in front of an audience of this size,” Volenik said.

Volenik then recognized students who participated in the solo/ensemble competition on March 24. He then recognized Quinton Miller, French horn, for being chosen as a member of the Ohio State University Honors Band in February.

The band opened with “Our Director March” by Frank Bigelow, followed by “Greenwillow Portrait.” As with the seventhgrade band, before each selection, a band member introduced the piece and gave an explanation of the song.

Next, the students performed “Arabian Dances” by Roland Barrett.

“We have a trumpet quartet of John Heino, Nathan Gostley, Ben Pugh and Nolan Williard ready to perform for you tonight. Mr. Rollo also worked with these students for about six weeks learning this piece,” Volenik said.

The eighth-grade trumpet quartet, which also competed at the ensemble competition with this piece, performed “Introduction and Fanfare” by Percy Hall.

Next, the band presented “Along for the Ride” by Mike Story, which was a jazz composition, and included improvisational performances by several students on a variety of instruments.

“The students who just played solos were completely improvising. They created their music on the spot. Let’s give them another round of applause,” Volenik said.

Volenik then recognized the eighth-grade band members who participated in the solo/ ensemble competition March 24. He also recognized two band members, Abby Vernon, clarinet, and John Heino, trumpet, for being chosen as members of the Ohio State University Honors Band in February.

The eighth-grade band closed out the concert with their final selection of “Skydive” by Chris Bernotas.

Band members, family and friends were invited to the cafeteria for a dessert reception after the concert.

Students Leadership Challenge 2018 In celebration of his more than 50 years in martial arts, Master Park is offering a “Students Leadership Challenge 2018.” Park has been training and instructing martial arts to all ages for more than five decades in the United States and Korea. He has witnessed and proved that more than 90 percent of students became more successful academically, physically and mentally when participating in martial arts instruction. This year, 3-8 students will be selected from each school building location of 10 local school districts from across the Mahoning Valley. Students participate in 38th annual Civic Day

The 38th annual Civic Day, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Canfield, took place with 38 Canfield High School juniors and seniors assuming the roles of city, township and school officials on May 5.

The day was organized by Canfield High School government teacher Todd Muckleroy and provided the students an opportunity to become familiar with the workings of their local government.

Each student was assigned an official from Canfield City Council, Canfield Schools or Canfield Township to shadow during the day. For example, Vincent Patierno took over the role of Mayor Richard Duffett, Isabelle Nuppnau took over the role of Clerk of Mayor’s Court Lynda Seabrook, Grace Schuler took over the role of Clerk of Council Pat Bernat, Lauren Johnson assumed the role of Trustee Marie Izzo-Cartwright, Joe Marzano assumed the role of Township Fiscal Officer Carmen Heasley, Rajan Taneja took over the role of School Superintendent Alex Geordan, Madison Schrock assumed the role of Canfield Local Schools Treasurer Patricia Prince and Conor Crogan assumed the role of Resource Officer Steve Garstka.

Civic Day started at the Canfield Local Schools Board Office where the students conducted a mock school board meeting with their official counterparts.

The school officials helped the students understand how a school board meeting is conducted and explained policies and procedures for the meeting.

The students then toured Canfield Village Middle School and were given a tour of the police and fire stations.

The students walked over to the Canfield Municipal Building where they were welcomed

by City Council President John Morvay who gave them an overview of City Council meetings and city government.

The students hosted a mock city council meeting, with the help of their counterparts. The students were coached through a council meeting, complete with motions, questions from meeting attendees, discussions, roll call, debates, reading of reports and banging of the gavel.

Acting in the role of the mayor, Vincent Patierno read a resolution which declared May 4, 2018, as Canfield High School Civic Day. Mayor Richard Duffett encouraged the students to get involved in government.

Toward the end of the meeting, a motion was made to provide the absence of final exams for Canfield High School seniors. After a second, the motion was put to a vote, the majority ruled in favor of the motion.

Mayor Duffett thanked the students for visiting Council Chambers.

“Thank you for visiting us today. I hope you learned a lot about how the City of Canfield operates. I am a lifetime Canfield resident and I didn’t know

the city was run so efficiently.

But because of the type of government we follow, we are efficient and work closely together.

Canfield is the greatest city in the state of Ohio of its size. No question,” Duffett said.

The students then traveled to the Canfield Township Hall where a mock trustee meeting took place.

To close out the day, the Rotary Club of Canfield had a luncheon for the students and city, township and school officials at St. Michael’s Church.

May 18 Citation: John Berchtold, 23, of Center Road, Poland, was cited on a charge of driving 55 mph on a portion of East Main Street with a 35-mph speed limit.

Arrest: Authorities on West Main Street pulled over then charged Tyler Wells, 25, of West Main, Canfield, with driving under suspension.

Citation: Officers cited Shohanah Coleman of Ridgelawn Avenue, Youngstown, after saying Coleman, 25, had driven 43 mph on a section of Turner Road with a 25-mph speed limit.

Citation: Myla Barnett, 18, of Jefferson Street, Campbell, was cited on charges of having no operator’s license and having an expired registration after officers had pulled her over near Hood Street.

4-H’ers Unlimited met on April 22 for the monthly meeting. President Justine Knauf reported on the success of the annual 4-H Easter Egg Hunt. More than 10,000 eggs were put out and collected by area youth. Safety Officer Katherine Pomponio discussed the importance of using sunscreen. Health Officer Jenna Vrabel gave a report on laughter. Recreation Leader Lindsey Knauf led the club in a game of “Ships and Sailors.” Not to be left out, the club Cloverbuds had a special pull-out session where they learned about birds that were native to Ohio. After some discussion about these creatures, the Cloverbuds made bird feeders to take home for their flying friends. The feeders were made out of either bagels or pinecones, shortening and birdseed.

Happily Ever After Courtney Nolan | Richard Rosen MONTEREY, CALIF.

Richard Patrick Rosen of Boardman and Courtney Nolan of Westlake were married Aug. 12, 2017, at Santa Catalina Rosary Chapel in Monterey, Calif. An evening reception took place in the historic ballroom in Club Del Monte at Monterey Naval Postgraduate School.

The newlyweds were honored at a local reception hosted by the groom’s parents at Our Lady of Mount Carmel social hall Sept. 23, 2017.

The bride is a daughter of Robert and Nancy Nolan of Marina, Calif.

Richard and Dianna Rosen of Boardman are the parents of the groom.

The bride wore a white, strapless gown with a sweetheart bodice and chapel-length train. Soft beading on Alencon lace on tulle completed her look.

Amy Senk was the matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Heather Osher, Jessica Hyduk, Tami Villa, Mackenzie Brown, Kristen Sorbo, Michelle Villa and Melissa Rosen, sister-in-law of the groom. Kinsley and Laila Senk and Brynn Rosen, niece of the groom, were the flower girls.

The attendants’ dresses were royal blue.

Rob Rosen, brother of the groom, performed the duties of best man. Groomsmen were Jason Rodesky, Dan Yanek, Brian Wess, Melvin McKee, Matt Nist

and Brett Becker. The ring bearer was Dylan Rosen, nephew of the groom.

Mrs. Rosen graduated from the University of Dayton with a bachelor’s degree in biology. She also received her medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pa. She is practicing pediatrics at the Cleveland Clinic.

Mr. Rosen graduated from John Carroll University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in business management technology. He is a sales representative for Keurig Dr. Pepper.

The couple honeymooned in Hawaii and reside in Strongsville.

Maggie Vinopal, Brian Slavens Jr. plan July vows Charles and Marianne Vinopal of Boardman and Brian and Kathleen Slavens of Poland are announcing the engagement of their children, Maggie Vinopal and Brian Slavens Jr., both of Boardman.

The wedding will take place at 1 p.m. July 7 at St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown. Invitations will be issued for the ceremony and for a reception to take place that evening at The Embassy in Youngstown.

The bride-elect graduated from Walsh University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She graduated from Ohio State University with a master’s degree in that field. She is a neonatal nurse practitioner at Akron Children’s Hospital in Boardman.

The prospective groom earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing. He is a nurse at Mercy Health in Youngstown.

Hanleys observe their diamond anniversary Martin and Mary Ann Hanley recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary during a private dinner at Nicolinni’s that was hosted by their daughters, Mary Kathleen and Maureen Hanley.

The Hanley’s are the parents of nine children which include Mary Kathleen Hanley (Nick Melfi) of Liberty; Marty Hanley of Columbus; Maureen Hanley of Hubbard; Michael (Joyce) Hanley of Lowellville; Matthew Patrick (Lisa) Hanley of Dayton; Mary Frances Hanley of Lowellville; Jennifer (Craig) Froomkin of Liberty; Suzanne Hanley of Lowellville; and Gregory Hanley of Cleveland.

Twelve grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren complete their family.

Mr. Hanley married the former Mary Ann McCulloch on April 26, 1958, at St. James Church in Altoona, Pa. Mrs. Hanley worked as a 2-D echo technician for St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, Dr. Saalouke, Dr. Hoffman and North Side Hospital until retiring

in 2013. She is a member of the Good Hope Lutheran Church in Boardman.

Mr. Hanley was a boilermaker and welder for Youngstown Sheet & Tube until he retired in 1986. He also was a maintenance technician at Choffin Career and Technical Center from 1987 to 1989.

Mr. and Mrs. Pompeo will be honored in June POLAND

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Pompeo of Poland will be honored in observance of their 60th wedding anniversary at a family dinner in June.

The couple’s children are Gina (Don) Gossick, Troy, Mich.; Julie (Neil) Bell, Winter Springs, Fla.; Albert (Darlene) Pompeo, Poland; and Joseph (Lisa) Pompeo, also of Poland. They also have nine grandchildren.

Mr. Pompeo married the former Anna Vaccariello on June 4, 1959, at St. Nicholas Church in Struthers.

Mrs. Pompeo was a seamstress for Moyers Pants Factory and The Garment Center in Youngstown until she retired in 2000. She taught catechism for 30 years, and played bocce and was part of a bowling league.

Mr. Pompeo was a pipe fitter for LTV Steel until he retired in 1986. He was an area umpire for 50 years and a member of the Pacentrano Club, St.

Anthony Club and Bocce and Morra leagues.

The couple are members of Holy Family Church in Poland, where Mr. Pompeo has served as an usher.
