Tri-Gold Prime Time Chapter ABWA celebrates anniversary The ABWA Tri-Gold Prime Time Chapter celebrated its 14th anniversary on April 11 at A La Carte Catering in Canfield. The evening was highlighted by honoring the 2018-2019 Chapter Woman of the year, Sarah Janutolo.

Janutolo has been a ABWA member for 43 years with perfect attendance for 39 years. She has served as a past president for seven years and is the chapter’s current education chairman. She has been past president of the Mahoning Valley ABWA Network Council and is currently holding the office of vice-chairman. She is retired from Mahoning County Jobs and Family Services, where she worked in the business and accounting office. Perfect attendance awards were presented by Doris Almasy, Membership Chair, to Lena Pilla, Sarah Janutolo, Delores Brindle, Mary Ann David, Doris Almasy, Mary Lou Murray, Sharon Pasquale, Mary Fran Rish, Elena Nigro, Jolyn Bush, Dolly Sonnenlitter, Kay Meyers, Dianne Guthrie and Pat Pero.

Entertainment was by Angelo Lamarco and Black Horse.

Local church hosts strawberry festival The Poland Presbyterian Church

Strawberry Festival will take place on June 29 from 5-8:30 p.m. on the church lawn, located at 2 Poland Manor, rain or shine. Watch the parade, enjoy strawberries, ice cream, shortcake, hots dogs, sausage sandwiches, snacks and beverages during the event. There will also be a 50/50 drawing and summer basket raffle. All proceeds will go toward benefitring the PPC Parish Life Committee and PPC youth programs.

Felger Exotics Come “monkey” around with Felger Exotics live animals on June 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Poland library. There will not only be monkeys, but a bunny or two. Camp out at the library Enjoy stories and songs around the “campfire” at the Poland library on June 22 at 2 p.m. Explore a tent, make an outdoorsy craft and learn how to make s’mores. Students Leadership Challenge 2018 In celebration of his more than 50 years in martial arts, Master Park is offering a “Students Leadership Challenge 2018.” Park has been training and instructing martial arts to all ages for more than five decades in the United States and Korea. He has witnessed and proved that more than 90 percent of students became more successful academically, physically and mentally when participating in martial arts instruction. This year, 3-8 students will be selected from each school building location of 10 local school districts from across the Mahoning Valley. Schools participating are Boardman, St. Charles, Poland, Holy Family, Canfield, South Range, Austintown, Cardinal Mooney High School, Ursuline High School, St. Christine, Western Reserve, West Branch, Columbiana, Springfield and Lowellville. A scholarship will be available to those who are chosen for 1-3 months of 1-hour classes twice per week. To apply, you must have at least a GPA of 2.5 or higher. You must submit a form and two recommendations from a teacher or parent.

Students are required to follow the rules and regulations. No experience is required. Individual and corporate sponsorships are also available at the following levels: listing sponsor - $100; silver - $300; gold - $500 and platinum - $700. The Poland Historical Society led third-grade students from Dobbins Elementary on a tour around the township on May 23.

The tour took the students down South Main Street to see

the number of historic sites the area has to offer. In all, they visited roughly 30 sites before ending the tour at Baird Mitchell Field and heading to the Village Green for a picnic together.

The program began four years ago. A third-grade teacher asked the society if they could do an event to raise awareness and knowledge about Poland’s history.

The groups visited sites such

as the former home of President William McKinley, the village pantry and the Robert Walker House. They learned about Walker’s connections to the community, as well as former President McKinley’s connections. The trip also took the children inside Town Hall to learn about local government.

Square Dance event on June 9 The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on June 9 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Ed Pabst will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances between the tips. This will be a high/low dance with tips for new dancers and tips for more experienced dancers. The Inn celebrates Mother’s Day

The Inn at Poland Way celebrated Mother’s Day with families and guests coming to the facility for lunch on May 12.

They provided the guests and residents with food and drinks.

They set up tables in their large dining area, in small rooms in the front of the building and in the lobby of the facility for the 85 guests that visited.

“I just wanted to honor resident moms and make them feel special,” said Activities Director Kathy Boosinger. She wanted to give the residents a night to remember. She was pleased with the large turn out.

The facility gave the residents and guests small sandwiches and egg salads with the choice of three desserts. They also raffled off centerpieces from Wildflower Cove to the residents.

“It’s heartwarming to see residents with family and enjoying the evening,” said Diane Reese, who owns the Inn at the Poland Way and other Briarfield homes with her husband Ed Reese. She always enjoys being able to incorporate the family in events.

The facility plans on making the event an annual one.

Boosinger said the event was a nice one for families to spend time together.

The spring meeting of the Mahoning Retired Teachers Association recognized its 80-year or older members for their support and contribution to the association. Board member Peggy Bennett presented carnations to the honorees. Mary Allgood (center) was acknowledged as the oldest (more than 100) member present. Special recognition was also given to more than 100-year-old Frances Ritz (not present) for recently receiving the Youngstown State University Achievement Award. Knapick Memorial” in honor of deceased MRTA members. It will become part of the permanent collection of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.

Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. announced for summer The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley recently announce that it is bringing back and tripling its summer day camp options for children with special needs and their neurotypical friends. Three weeks of two styles of camp will be offered. Dates include June 18-22 (integrated camp for ages 6-13), July 30 until Aug. 3 (full camp and integrated camp for ages 3-22) and Aug. 13-17 (integrated camp for ages 6-13). Camp Friend is unique because the student-to-counselor ratio is extremely low and unmatched to ad-

dress the intense needs of children and teens on the autism spectrum. As a result, every year interested applicants had to be turned away for lack of enough space. The addition of integrated camp will allow ASMV to serve more families by offering more camper spots. Integrated camp will provide the opportunity for higher-functioning individuals to attend a traditional day camp with our counselors there to assist as they have ideal chance to strengthen their social skills. Boy Scouts spend Earth Day cleaning the Mill Creek MetroParks

The Whispering Pines District of the Great Trail Council of Boy Scouts of America and Mill Creek MetroParks organized the annual Earth Day Clean Up on April 21.

Numerous scouting troops a nd communit y orga nizations visited 29 locations in the metropark to clean up litter and other debris from the areas.

They received help from communities in Austintown, Boardman, Canfield, North Jackson, Poland, Struthers, Warren and Youngstown. Carol Vigorito, Recreation and Education Director of Mill Creek MetroParks, and Mike Kupec of the Whispering Pines District worked together to organize the program.

“It’s in my blood to help the env ironment,” said Kupec, who has worked with different forestry groups since he was a child. He created the event with Mill Creek’s then-recreational director 36 years ago. He wanted to give back on Earth Day and help clean up the park he grew up near.

Austintown had three organizations assist in cleaning the park: Cub Scout Pack 184, Boy Scout Troop 184 and Girl Scout Troop 80207. The pack cleaned the Lanterman Gorge, the Boy Scouts took the West Cohasset Trails and the Girl Scouts had the trail behind the Ford Nature Center.

“We want to teach the girls the importance of taking care of the planet,” said Kelly Turner, the head of the Girl Scout Troop 80207. She said this was the group’s first real introduction to the world of scouting.

Boardman had Cub Scout Pack 27 at Lake Newport, Boy Scout Troop 60 at the lower area of Bear’s Den, Venturing Crew 9033 on the Cohasset East Trail, Cub Scout Pack 114 at the MetroParks Farm and Girl Scout Service Units 820 and 821 in different parts of Lake Newport. The also had the Drund company clean up at Volney Rogers Field.

In addition to scouting units, two businesses and four families helped with the Earth Day Clean Up. The program spanned 29 locations this year, such as Hitchcock Woods. 821 both spoke about how they want to instill the Boy Scout of America’s principal of “leave no trace” in their scouts. The scouts said they got to enjoy nature and exercise while helping the environment. The unit incorporates children from 2-10 from Boardman and Poland.

The Canfield groups included Girl Scout Troop 80095 at the Mill Creek Preserve and Cub Scout Pack 25 and Boy Scout Troop 115 at Lake Newport. Boy Scout Troop 25 cleaned up at the West Coast Drive on April 25. Casal’s de’ Spa and Salon also joined the program, helping out at the Lake Glacier Boathouse.

Kevin Miller, the Tiger Den Leader for Cub Scout Pack 25, also spoke to the principals of “leave no trace.”

“Leave an area better than you found it,” he said about what the program teaches the children.

The group not only helped on Earth Day, but they organize hikes together throughout the year. They always take trash bags with them on these hikes to remove litter from nature.

Poland’s two groups, Girl Scout Troop 80591 and Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop 9002, joined in the other groups

on the activities. The girl scouts cleaned the area around the Slippery Rock Pavilion and the 9002 groups took the Hitchcock Woods.

“There’s a lot of trash in places you wouldn’t expect,” said Noah Deering, a boy scout with troop 9002. Anthony DiTommaso, the leader of the groups, said he wanted to help leave things natural and pick up the trash they find. The scouts found a lot of cigarette butts and glass in the woods.

Kupec and the leaders believe that the event is important. The first year of the program, they only focused on one hillside and they filled four dumpsters of trash.

The program has since expanded to 42 possible locations that the park decided would be best. Kupec said the event allows for groups to help clean the areas that park crews cannot always reach.

The event is open to the public each year. This year, Kupec and Vigorito had two businesses and four families helped with the program. They also get support from the Mahoning County Green Team Recycling Division and Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup program.

Spanish Club celebrates Latin cultures with fiesta

Ur s u l i ne H ig h S c ho ol’s Spanish Club hosted their annual “Fiesta de las Americas” event on April 26 at the high school.

Their fourth annual fiesta included dances, alpacas, a cultural display and food by Señor Jalapeño. The students worked on the displays and dances after school with their

teacher, professor Pau lina Montaldo.

“I saw a need for the Spanish students to learn the cultures they studied,” said Montaldo. She said the most important thing is that the event brings students and families throughout the community together.

The Labra Brothers Band began the performances on the stage in the cafeteria. Following their set, a dancing groups

from Slippery Rock University, local dancers and members of the Spanish Club danced.

T h e Ur s u l i n e s t u d e n t s learned dances of folklore to represent Columbia, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Spain. Slippery Rock professor Melissa Teodoro brought in the university’s Afro-Cubian Dance Ensemble for several dances.

The club created a cultural display for the visitors of the event to learn about other cultures. The students researched cultures of countries, such as Peru and Columbia, for the display. Montaldo also invited Kester’s Krias Alpacas to the event for the visitors.

“I look forward to it every

year. I’m proud of their hard work,” said Maggie Matune, assistant principal of Ursuline High School. She said the she loves seeing so many cultures represented and embraced by people of all ages.

The event brought in approximately 450 visitors to the school. They received funding for the fiesta from Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, which they used for authentic Mexican dresses.

On April 22 (Earth Day), Thomas Tsudis, his mother Athena and Holy Family math teacher Becky Distad cleaned up part of Yellow Creek in Poland. They were surprised at how much trash was there ruining the beauty of nature. They said that trash comes from people throwing out of their cars on the freeway and it ends up flowing down the river. Thomas was determined to help clean up and he wants to make this a yearly tradition. He said he learned about Earth Day from school and his first-grade teacher, Jessica Seifert. Happily Ever After Courtney Nolan | Richard Rosen MONTEREY, CALIF.

Richard Patrick Rosen of Boardman and Courtney Nolan of Westlake were married Aug. 12, 2017, at Santa Catalina Rosary Chapel in Monterey, Calif. An evening reception took place in the historic ballroom in Club Del Monte at Monterey Naval Postgraduate School.

The newlyweds were honored at a local reception hosted by the groom’s parents at Our Lady of Mount Carmel social hall Sept. 23, 2017.

The bride is a daughter of Robert and Nancy Nolan of Marina, Calif.

Richard and Dianna Rosen of Boardman are the parents of the groom.

The bride wore a white, strapless gown with a sweetheart bodice and chapel-length train. Soft beading on Alencon lace on tulle completed her look.

Amy Senk was the matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Heather Osher, Jessica Hyduk, Tami Villa, Mackenzie Brown, Kristen Sorbo, Michelle Villa and Melissa Rosen, sister-in-law of the groom. Kinsley and Laila Senk and Brynn Rosen, niece of the groom, were the flower girls.

The attendants’ dresses were royal blue.

Rob Rosen, brother of the groom, performed the duties of best man. Groomsmen were Jason Rodesky, Dan Yanek, Brian Wess, Melvin McKee, Matt Nist

and Brett Becker. The ring bearer was Dylan Rosen, nephew of the groom.

Mrs. Rosen graduated from the University of Dayton with a bachelor’s degree in biology. She also received her medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pa. She is practicing pediatrics at the Cleveland Clinic.

Mr. Rosen graduated from John Carroll University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in business management technology. He is a sales representative for Keurig Dr. Pepper.

The couple honeymooned in Hawaii and reside in Strongsville.

Maggie Vinopal, Brian Slavens Jr. plan July vows Charles and Marianne Vinopal of Boardman and Brian and Kathleen Slavens of Poland are announcing the engagement of their children, Maggie Vinopal and Brian Slavens Jr., both of Boardman.

The wedding will take place at 1 p.m. July 7 at St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown. Invitations will be issued for the ceremony and for a reception to take place that evening at The Embassy in Youngstown.

The bride-elect graduated from Walsh University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She graduated from Ohio State University with a master’s degree in that field. She is a neonatal nurse practitioner at Akron Children’s Hospital in Boardman.

The prospective groom earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing. He is a nurse at Mercy Health in Youngstown.

Hanleys observe their diamond anniversary Martin and Mary Ann Hanley recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary during a private dinner at Nicolinni’s that was hosted by their daughters, Mary Kathleen and Maureen Hanley.

The Hanley’s are the parents of nine children which include Mary Kathleen Hanley (Nick Melfi) of Liberty; Marty Hanley of Columbus; Maureen Hanley of Hubbard; Michael (Joyce) Hanley of Lowellville; Matthew Patrick (Lisa) Hanley of Dayton; Mary Frances Hanley of Lowellville; Jennifer (Craig) Froomkin of Liberty; Suzanne Hanley of Lowellville; and Gregory Hanley of Cleveland.

Twelve grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren complete their family.

Mr. Hanley married the former Mary Ann McCulloch on April 26, 1958, at St. James Church in Altoona, Pa. Mrs. Hanley worked as a 2-D echo technician for St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, Dr. Saalouke, Dr. Hoffman and North Side Hospital until retiring

in 2013. She is a member of the Good Hope Lutheran Church in Boardman.

Mr. Hanley was a boilermaker and welder for Youngstown Sheet & Tube until he retired in 1986. He also was a maintenance technician at Choffin Career and Technical Center from 1987 to 1989.

Mr. and Mrs. Pompeo will be honored in June POLAND

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Pompeo of Poland will be honored in observance of their 60th wedding anniversary at a family dinner in June.

The couple’s children are Gina (Don) Gossick, Troy, Mich.; Julie (Neil) Bell, Winter Springs, Fla.; Albert (Darlene) Pompeo, Poland; and Joseph (Lisa) Pompeo, also of Poland. They also have nine grandchildren.

Mr. Pompeo married the former Anna Vaccariello on June 4, 1959, at St. Nicholas Church in Struthers.

Mrs. Pompeo was a seamstress for Moyers Pants Factory and The Garment Center in Youngstown until she retired in 2000. She taught catechism for 30 years, and played bocce and was part of a bowling league.

Mr. Pompeo was a pipe fitter for LTV Steel until he retired in 1986. He was an area umpire for 50 years and a member of the Pacentrano Club, St.

Anthony Club and Bocce and Morra leagues.

The couple are members of Holy Family Church in Poland, where Mr. Pompeo has served as an usher.
