New garden helps grow community togetherness By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Ground was broken for an upcoming seven-acre garden at the former Woodside Elementary School grounds on May 18. Members of the Austintown Woodside Community Garden committee approached the Austintown trustees in hopes of being able to utilize the old school land and keeping it protected by turning it into a garden. The trustees thought it was a perfect idea to bring the community together and keep the land safe. Dale Basista, garden committee member, said this community garden will be one of the biggest in the state. The garden will start out with sunflowers, wildflowers and other types of plants that are drought tolerant and can grown on their own until there is a water source. The Austintown Rotary is helping out to raise funds to drill a well on the property to create a water source. “We’re quite honored by this. It’s quite a responsibility, but we’ll get through it,” said Ba-
sista. Once the garden has a water source, there will be berry patches, fruit trees, vegetable gardens and more. There are plans of having benches, picnic tables and walk-ways so people can come and enjoy the property. Much of the food will be donated to local food banks and for those in need. Before the groundbreaking, there was a short ceremony in which several guest speakers talked about the new garden and how it will be beneficial for the community. There will be areas for community members to plant their own gardens. “Good things always happen when we do them together,” said chairman of the Austintown trustees Rick Stauffer. Local artist Chris Yambar, a Woodside Elementary alumnus, and Judge Anthony D’Apolito said a few words about their thoughts on the transformation of the land into a community garden. Both speakers mentioned that this idea is a way to See COMMUNITY, Page 4

Girls waited in the other room at Boardman Park as they prepared to walk the runway during the Mommy and Me for Tea Fashion Show.
School volunteered to help with the different stations. The students said they liked seeing the mothers and daughters come in wearing their best outfits, make cute and easy crafts and spend quality time together. The event finished off with a runway fashion show. Mothers took a seat as their daughters strutted their stuff down the runway. As the daughters walked down, McCallum would describe what they’re wearing, what they like and a little bit about them. “It’s made to be a fun, seasonal, holiday day to spend with mom,” said Karen McCallum.
