Hilltop fourth-graders experiment at science fair By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
Hi l ltop E lementa r y School fourth-grade students put their scientific skills on display for the school’s annual Science Fair on May 26. The students exhibited their experiments and results for family, friends and fellow students in the school’s gymnasium. The students worked on their projects and were guided step-bystep by their fourth-grade teachers. Each student was required to conduct a scientific experiment on a topic that interested them and were then asked to create a display board describing their experiment. Each display included the project’s problem to be solved, the student’s hypothesis, the materials used, the procedure of the experiment, the results and a conclusion in which the student stated if the hypothesis was correct or incorrect and what he or she had learned from the experiment. Students could also include photos of themselves conducting their experiment, charts, diagrams, illustrations, histograms and graphs on their displays. Several also had hands-on demonstrations. The students stood by their display board in the gym and were available to explain their projects to attendees and fellow students and answer any questions they may have had concerning the topic. The fourth-graders chose a variety of topics, such as: Which ball can I throw the farthest?, What makes ice melt?, What fruit is denser than water?, Which surface does a basketball bounce highest?, Does age affect memory?, Which fruit makes the best battery?, Which bat hits the farthest - metal or wood?, Which brand of battery lasts the longest?, Which brand of soccer ball goes the farthest? and What brand of paper towel, when wet, will hold the most pennies before tearing? Each student received a red participant ribbon from their teacher to hang on their display boards and take home as a souvenir from the science fair.

Mothers and daughters celebrate with food and fashion By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Moms and daughters wore their best outfits to the 13th annual Mommy and Me for Tea Fashion Show at Boardman Park on May 7. There were two times for the mothers and daughters to attend and more than 170 people came to the event. The program started with tea, sandwiches, pastries and other refreshments for everyone to eat and drink. When the meal was finished, guests went to the other room to make crafts and participate in the runway show. “It’s just a fun afternoon for the moms and daughters
to have lunch, do some crafts and have a picture taken,” said Boardman Park Recreation Director Karen McCallum. The event was filled with several mothers and daughters come as a yearly tradition, while others came for the first time. Many of the mothers say they enjoy coming back because it gives them an opportunity to spend time with their daughters making items to take home and forming new memories. Students from the Emerging Leaders Club at Boardman High School volunteered to help with the different stations. The students said they liked seeing the mothers and daughters come in
wearing their best outfits, make cute and easy crafts and spend quality time together. The event finished off with a runway fashion show. Mothers took a seat as their daughters strutted their stuff down the runway. As the daughters walked down, McCallum would describe what they’re wearing, what they like and a little bit about them. “It’s made to be a fun, seasonal, holiday day to spend with mom,” said Karen McCallum.

To celebrate Right to Read Week, Hilltop Elementar y School was transformed into a sugar-lovers paradise with the theme of “Reading is Sweet” on May 8-12. The lobby, hallways and classrooms were decorated with lollipops, M&M’s, candy kisses, ice cream cones and wrapped candy, which the teachers and students created. As part of the Right to Read Week activities, the students participated in the CHRISTIE Campaign. During the month of April, students accepted donations based on a reading goal they set for themselves. The money collected will be used to purchase books for patients at Akron Children’s Hospital - Mahoning Valley. They will be given to patients during admits and outpatient treatments. Each book will contain a label that states the book was donated by the children of Hilltop Elementary as part of their CHRISTIE Campaign.
To kick off the week, a giant Candyland game was set up in the gym on May 8-9. Thirdgrade teacher Marie Rupert, along with committee members kindergarten teacher Meaghan Manning, kindergarten teacher Mackenzie Thomas, special education teacher Hannah Snyder and intervention specialist Chelsea Kriebel, created the game for the students to play. When the students came into the gym, there were three stations for them to visit. One was the Candyland game, at which an electronic spinner told the students how many squares to move until they got to the end. A second station was set up so students could read books, and a third station was set up where students could get a popsicle as a sweet treat. “The students are enjoying our Candyland. It’s a good way to tie in reading with the day’s activities. With the end of the school year coming soon, it’s a nice memory for them to have. They really enjoy it and it ties into our reading in class and our ELA courses,” Rupert said.

CVMS band students perform annual concert By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
The Canfield Village Middle School fifth- and sixth-grade bands presented their annual spring concert at the Canfield High School on May 16. The bands were under the direction of CVMS Band Director James Volenik and Youngstown State University Student Teacher Hannah Wilhelm. Volenik welcomed the large audience of family and friends to the concert. “Welcome to our annual fifth- and sixth-grade spring concert. Up first are the fifthgraders. They have shown huge improvements since our Pasta Dinner on the last Saturday in February to now in May. That is an awful lot of improvement in that amount of time. I am very proud of them. They have made lots of progress and sound so good,” Volenik said. The fifth-grade band opened the concert with a medley of “Yankee Doodle,” “College Song,” “Blow the Man Down,” “Down in the Valley” and “The Man on the Flying Trapeze.” With Wilhelm conducting, the band continued with “Centurion,” by Mark Williams. With Volenik back in front of the band, they then performed “Starlight,” arranged by John O’Reilly. The students then closed their portion of the concert with “Mary Ann,” arranged by
Mark Williams. Volenik took the stage to introduce the sixth-grade band. “For the sixth-grade band’s performance, we have a neat program for you tonight because we have a lot of different kinds of music. The first selection has become one of their favorites, so please enjoy,” Volenik said. The band opened with “Journey to Centauras,” by Ed Huckeby. The next selection, “March from ’Scipio’,” arranged by Bruce Pearson, featured the low brass section. The students were under the tutelage of C.H. Campbell Music Director and Assistant Band Director Michael Fay. The entire band then continued with “Little Rock,” by James Ployhar. Along with Brass Paraprofessional Mike Carden, the French horns performed “Capriccio,” arranged by Bruce Pearson. Wilhelm then conducted the band for “Hang on Sloopy,” arranged by John Edmondson. The next selection, “Dance Song,” arranged by Bruce Pearson, featured the clarinet section under Woodwind Paraprofessional Al Colella. The sixth-grade closed out the concert with their final selection of “Lone Star Overture,” by John O’Reilly. “Thank you, everyone, for coming tonight. Have a great summer,” Volenik said.

CHC students celebrate with sundaes By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
C.H. Campbell Elementary School students were treated to an ice cream sundae bar during the school’s annual Student Appreciation Day on May 19. The Handel’s ice cream bar was provided by the school’s PTO, and included such topping as chocolate sauce, sprinkles, crushed Oreos, gummy worms, whipped cream and the cherry on top. Taking advantage of the sunshine, the students enjoyed the ice cream sundae bar outside in the afternoon and then got a half an hour to play on the
playground. Several PTO parent volunteers helped the students prepare their sundaes. “We are very fortunate to have over 30 volunteers helping us out today. They have been so amazing,” said Cathy Flynn, Student Appreciation Day chair. C.H. Campbell Elementary School’s Student Appreciation Day takes place annually to thank the students for being good students and for a great school year. “Today is a day to thank the students for all their hard work this year. It’s a fun day,” Flynn said.
