Historical Society participates in June events The Poland Historical Society recently announced the following activities it will participate in during June: on June 10 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. will be the Treasures in a Trunk Sale at Poland Seminary High School, located at 3199 Dobbins Road in Poland; on June 11 from 1-3 p.m. will be the open house at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road in Poland Township; on June 20 at 6:30 p.m. will be a meeting at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road in Poland Township. The Poland Historical Society will be offering guided walking tours of historic sites in Poland during the week of Celebrate Poland 2017. Dates and times for the tours are June 28 from 7-8 p.m. for the historic South Main Street (meet at Poland Village Town Hall, located at 308 S. Main St. in Poland), June 29 from 7–8 p.m. for the Old Graveyard Tour next to Presbyterian Church (located at 2 Poland Manor), June 30 from 6–7 p.m. for the Old Graveyard Tour next to Presbyterian Church (located at 2 Poland Manor), June 30 from 8-9 p.m. for the historic Poland Presbyterian Church (located at 2 Poland Manor) and July 1 from 1-2 p.m. for the historic South Main Street (meet at the Poland Historical Society Tent, located near the Village Town Hall). Poland Relay for Life celebrates superhero survivors This year marks the 10th year of the Poland Relay for Life. Bring your entire family and help them celebrate. The theme this year is “Heroes of Hope.” Cancer survivors are superheroes, and they will be honored and supported during this relay event. The 2017 Poland Relay for Life will take place on June 16 and 17 at the Poland Seminary High School stadium, starting at 6 p.m. on June 16 and ending at 2 p.m. on June 17. Survivor Registration begins at 5 p.m. on Friday night. Friday night’s activities will include a free survivor dinner for survivors and their caregivers, provided by Belleria of Struthers, and the moving and uplifting Luminaria ceremony. Saturday will feature the Kids’ Relay Party, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. with free prizes, cake and activities. At noon, there will be a Guinness Book World Record attempt for the most people at an event wearing capes, Pillow cases, towels, bags, anything can be your cape.

Friendly Squares to have June dance The Niles Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on June 10 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Dress is casual and there is a $6 donation per person at the door. Denny Steiner will be the guest caller for the evening. Strawberry Festival to be on June 30 Poland Presbyterian Church’s annual Strawberry Festival will take place on June 30 from 5-8:30 p.m. on the church lawn, located at 2 Poland Manor in Youngstown. The event will feature strawberries, ice cream, short cake, hot dogs, sausage sandwiches, snacks and beverages. There will be live jazz and a summer basket raffle.

Knitting Guild celebrates with Knit-In To celebrate World Wide Knit in Public day the Western Reserve Knitting Guild will host a Knit-In at the Canfield library on June 10. Members and guests are encouraged to come and enjoy fellowship from 1-4 p.m. while working on various projects. Members are encouraged to work on the wreath project and are asked to bring two size 5 double pointed needles, size 3 straight or double pointed needles and a tapestry needle. Also you may bring a light snack to be shared with others. Coffee will be provided by the guild. The library is located at 43 W. Main Street in Canfield. This is not a library sponsored activity.

Poland library welcomed a special Disney princess to the “Be Our Guest” program on May 20. Belle from “Beauty and the Beast” attended the program and read the “Beauty and the Beast” story to the children and

their families who listened with smiles on their faces. Public library of Youngstown and Mahoning County librarians Jen Kuczek and Ashley Potopovich organized the event in celebration of the live version of “Beauty and the Beast” being released. Children of all ages attended the program to meet Belle and participate in all of the “Beauty

and the Beast” related activities. There were several tables set up around the room with activities the children could engage in after listening to the story and getting a picture with Belle. There was a table with Chip’s Bubble Tea for children to blow bubbles. A station was set up with temporary tattoos of Disney princesses, coloring pages and more.

Kucz ek a nd Potopov ich brought in another PLYMC staff member to dress up as Belle. Belle came prepared wearing her yellow dress, hair done and a red rose. Potopovich said after seeing the newly released movie, she hopes the children enjoy the program as much as she enjoyed organizing it.

The Mahoning County Educational Service Center honored an incredible group of talented high school artists and their instructors at the 30th annual Art Show on May 3. More than 100 original art pieces were on display. Poland will celebrate community and Independence Day during the 11th annual Celebrate Poland event on June 30 and July 1. The event starts on June 30 at 5:30 p.m. with the annual Strawberry Festival at Poland Prebysterian Church, with the Firemen’s Parade to follow, and ending the night will be a performance by Disco Inferno, so come dressed in 80’s attire for a costume contest. On July 1, the fun continues with a day full of activities and events at the Poland Village Hall. Ending Saturday night will be a fireworks display at 10 p.m. by American

Fireworks. “We want this to be an event that the entire family can enjoy,” said Celebrate Poland Committee President Cindy Best. To help parking and transportation easier for guests, there will be a free shuttle provided. On Saturday between 12-4 p.m., guests can park at the Poland Methodist Church and take the bus. From 6:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., people can park at the Methodist church and Poland Seminary High School and take a shuttle. All bussing and parking has been donated to Celebrate Poland and is free to the public. Celebrate Poland is still looking for contestants for Poland Idol, vendors for the craft show and contestants for a commu-

nity cherry pie baking contest. The Celebrate Poland Committee has grown in recent years thanks to help from local churches, primary New Life Church, Poland Village Baptist and Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Celebrate Poland is an all-volunteer event with costs covered by donations from the community. “We run strictly on donations so we hope that everyone will send a donation or look for our donation barrels at the event. Every dollar adds up to more fun the next year,” said Best. Students rode their bicycles into Poland North Preschool on May 5 for the St. Jude Trikea-Thon. Although the rain prevented the students from riding outside, they brought their bicycles into the gym and rode around. Students from Danielle Argeras, Joy Bucci and Samantha Cox’s class filled the gym and rode around with

their friends and classmates. Each class took turns riding around the gym until the end, when all three classes rode together. The St. Jude Trike-a-Thon fundraiser is something that is close to Cox, the transitional kindergarten teacher. Cox’s sister was admitted to St. Jude as a child and received amazing treatment from the staff. St. Jude provides treatment

Celebrate Poland offers activities for all ages. The fun begins on the evening of June 30 with the parade and the chance to gather up free candy tossed by marchers. Some of the many children’s offerings on July 1 include BounceA-Rounds, Touch a Truck, Poland Idol Contest, Chalk the Walk, children’s games, miniature golf and a reptile show. All of this, food and more are available throughout the day on July 1 at Poland Village Hall. A spectacular fireworks display will be enjoyed by all in the evening. Moms and daughters wore their best outfits to the 13th annual Mommy and Me for Tea Fashion Show at Boardman Park on May 7. There were two times for the mothers and daughters to attend and more than 170 people came to the event. The program started with tea, sandwiches, pastries and other refreshments for everyone to eat and drink. When the meal was finished,

guests went to the other room to make crafts and participate in the runway show. “It’s just a fun afternoon for the moms and daughters to have lunch, do some crafts and have a picture taken,” said Boardman Park Recreation Director Karen McCallum. Mothers took a seat as their daughters strutted their stuff down the runway. As the daughters walked down, McCallum would describe what they’re wearing, what they like and a little bit about them. “It’s made to be a fun, seasonal, holiday day to spend with mom,” said Karen McCallum.

Nicole Cicozi and Nico Saborse were married Dec. 10, 2016, at an evening ceremony at St. James Meeting House in Boardman Park. A reception followed at Avion on the Water, Canfield. David and Suzanne Cicozi are the parents of the bride, and Carmen and Sherry Saborse are the parents of the groom. All reside in Austintown. The bride wore a beaded tulle gown with long sleeves. Kate and Jacki Cicozi, the bride’s sisters, were her honor attendants. Bridesmaids were Tara Grischow, the groom’s sister; Jami Mazei; Jenna Miner, the groom’s cousin; Cara Cupler; Rose Saborse, the groom’s sister-in-law; and Abbie and Lillie Zoldan, the bride’s cousins. Lucille Miner, the groom’s cousin, was the flower girl. The attendants wore navy-blue dresses. Jacob Saborse, the groom’s brother, and Andrew Cercone shared the duties of best man. Groomsmen were Kevin Grischow, the groom’s brother-in-law; Andrew Koch; David Milne; Kam Henley; Joseph Miner and Hunter King, the groom’s cousins; and Noah Zoldan, the bride’s cousin. A cousin of the groom, Jonathan Lunsford, was the ring bearer.

M r s. Sabor se g r aduated f rom Youngstown State University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in intervention services. She is studying at YSU to be a school psychologist, and is interning at the Mahoning County Educational Service Center. Mr. Saborse graduated from YSU with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and is a team accountant for Schrodel, Scullin & Bestic. The couple reside in Canfield.

Youngstown State University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He is a payroll manager for Ohio Auto Body, Youngstown. Mr. and Mrs. Cantanzriti traveled to Key West, Fla., for their wedding trip. They reside in Boardman.
