HONEY

Bit came into the West Side Cats shelter without much background on her. She is a cute female gray cat, roughly around 4 1/2 years-old. She loves to be petted and gets along with the other cats at the shelter. She would most likely get along with school-age children and adults, but they are not sure about little ones. The shelter does not know how she would feel about dogs. All in all, Bit is a very nice, friendly little girl. Stop by West Side Cats to see her.

Honey is a sweet-tempered 3-year-old mix breed that currently weighs about 30 pounds. She is housebroken and very well behaved, as well as loving, although she needs a cat free home. If you have a resident dog, you will need to bring it with you when you come to meet Honey. Please PM Pawz 2 Adopt on their Facebook page for more information.

Robinwood Lane students become reading legends By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Robinwood Lane Elementary School celebrated its Right to Read Week May 9-13. The theme was “Reading Makes you Legendary” and each day the students celebrated Right to Read Week in a different way. There were dress up days for the students to participate in, such as wearing red, wearing a hat, dress as what they wanted to be when they grow up, wear black and bring a flashlight to read in the dark and wearing exercise clothes. The Read-a-Thon Fundraiser ran May 9-21 and is part of the Right to Read Week. Some of the incentives for raising money are a staff free throw contest, a backyard picnic for the school and more. Last year Robinwood raised $955 and used the money to buy Home Reading Pouches for all of the students. Students are reading at least a half hour everyday for two weeks. “Last year when we did it, we raised not even quite $1,000. So we already doubled what we raised last year,” said Jamie Malish, the reading center teacher at Robinwood. Guests readers visited different classrooms throughout the week to read a story or two to the students. Board members and administration, Boardman firemen, Paisley House residents, Making Kids Count volunteers and several others showed up to read books. PTA members worked on decorating the doors of classrooms for the Right to Read

Daughters become models at Mother’s Day tea By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Mothers and daughters gathered at the Lariccia Family Community Center at Boardman Park on May 1 for an afternoon of tea, crafts and fashion at the 12th annual Mommy and Me for Tea event. There were two tea times, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Both were sold out with around 45 couples making for 90 people at each tea. The event started off with a light lunch and tea. Following the lunch was craft time, where there were several tables full of different crafts for the guests to make. A professional photographer was there to take pictures of the mother and daughter couples. These pictures could then be put in the frames that the daughters made during craft time. The daughters had the chance to participate in a runway fashion show to bring the tea to an end. The daughters walked down a carpet runway to music and posed at different spots as a description is read aloud to the mothers and other guests. “They get to be a model and mom gets to write all about them and brag about her daughter,” said Karen McCallum, Boardman Park Recreation Director. After the runway show, music played and the daughters had a dance party with their mothers as they got ready to leave.

Residents, staff and volunteers at Beeghley Oaks dressed up in Hawaiian outfits for the luau during National Nursing Home Week on May 11.

Residents bring Hawaii to Boardman By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Beeghley Oaks Center for Rehabilitation and Healing celebrated National Nursing Home Week May 9-13. Residents at Beeghley Oaks had a Hawaiian day for Resident Appreciation Day on May 10. The Sugartree Alley Steel Drum Band attended Hawaiian day to perform music for the residents and any other guests who attended. Carol Zeigler, the Director of Concierge Services, was at the Tiki Time hut passing out Hawaiian-themed drinks for the residents to enjoy. There were piña coladas and a Beeghley Oaks speciality drink, Beeghley Breezes, for the residents to choose from. There was a limbo and a hula hoop contest for the guests to participate in. Many of the residents dressed in Hawaiian outfits to celebrate. Two residents, Esther Woodruff and Margie Mills, dressed up in fat Hawaiian costumes and hula danced to the music. “We had a big celebration all week long with an open house. We put new flags on the flagpole, we had a big wheelchair race,” said Maureen McCarty, activities director for Beeghley Oaks. Residents participated in several activities, regular and Hawaiian themed, throughout National Nursing Home Week. The activities gave the residents the opportunity to go outside and enjoy the nice weather with each other while being provided with different forms of entertainment.

Boardman’s Mixed Chorus performed “Charlottown” during the Spring Sing on May 11 at the Boardman Performing Arts Center.

Students sing Broadway’s bests

By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Boardman High School choral music department hosted its 65th annual Spring Choral Music Festival on May 11 at the Boardman Performing Arts Center. The 2016 Spring Sing was directed by Linda Smrek and had performances by the mixed chorus, the Boardman Singers, the chorale, the choir and the Spartan Singers. The theme for the Spring Sing was “Back to Broadway.” The opening performance was the Boardman High School Alma Mater performed by all of the students in the choral music department. Senior Aliza Patterson performed “Solfeggio” as a piano solo after the Boardman Sing-

ers finished their songs. After her performance, Patterson was acknowledged for receiving the director’s award of the American Choral Association plaque. “Her name will hang in our room forever,” said Smrek. Songs for the second part of the concert featured selections from “Les Miserables,” “Jersey Boys,” “Wicked,” “Shrek” and “Mary Poppins.” Several students showcased their talents with solos during different songs throughout the concert. The senior farewell featured two songs that wished the seniors in the choral music department well. The concert came to a conclusion, staying in the theme of Broadway, with the song “New York, New York” performed by all of the choirs.

ship Church, located at 4749 South Ave. in Boardman, from 9 a,m. until 1 p.m. Campers will be led through the entire experience of creating and producing a show “from auditions to opening night.” Classes will include acting, movement, voice, marketing and theatre games, as well as set construction, lighting, sound design and make up. The experience will culminate in a performance for parents and invited guests on the last day. Instructors for Camp Show Biz! are local theatre artists and drama teachers. The

cost for the camp is $130, which includes a daily lunch. Some scholarship assistance is available for qualified applicants. All campers will be offered roles in the Kids’ First Theatre Initiative production of “The Wizard of Oz” in October. The organization recently hosted a vocal competition, The Mahoning Valley Singing Star, Jr. and will shortly unveil plans for upcoming performance opportunities and classes for young people interested in theatre.
