Boardman Park hosts Adventure Day Camp With the school year coming to an end Boardman Park is offering a solution to keep your children active and engaged - register them for Boardman Park’s Adventure Day Camp. The goal of the camp is to offer young minds the opportunity to explore their imaginat ions, d iscover physica l fitness, expand their knowledge of sports and develop a growing sense of adventure through diverse activities. The curriculum is designed to be age appropriate, educational and fun as the children participate in a daily schedule of arts and crafts, team building, creative arts, science and sports. Adventure Day Camp will r un for ten weeks sta r t ing June 13 and ending Aug. 19. The camp hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. for children who have completed kindergarten through sixth-grade. Arrange-

HONEY
Bit came into the West Side Cats shelter without much background on her. She is a cute female gray cat, roughly around 4 1/2 years-old. She loves to be petted and gets along with the other cats at the shelter. She would most likely get along with school-age children and adults, but they are not sure about little ones. The shelter does not know how she would feel about dogs. All in all, Bit is a very nice, friendly little girl. Stop by West Side Cats to see her.
Honey is a sweet-tempered 3-year-old mix breed that currently weighs about 30 pounds. She is housebroken and very well behaved, as well as loving, although she needs a cat free home. Kid’s First Theatre Initiative selects winners Ethan Hess was the winner of the recent vocal completion, Mahoning Valley Singing Star, Jr. sponsored by the Kid’s First Theatre Initiative. Hess performed the song “Somebody to Love,” originally sung by rock star Freddy Mercury. Hess won a cash prize, vocal lessons with Rick Blackson and a recording session with Mainsail Music. Other winners were Ally Grande, Bailey Conley, Maddison Kutsch, Mia Bordonaro and Adrianna Quinlan, who were presented with framed plaques. Judges were local performers Mary Jo Maluso and Rick Blackson. Students at C.H. Campbell Elementary School were treated to an ice cream sundae bar during the school’s annual Student Appreciation Day on May 13. The ice cream bar was provided by the school’s PTO, and included such topping as chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, sprinkles, Oreos, gummy worms, whipped cream and, of course, the cherry on top. The students enjoyed ice cream sundae bar outside in the afternoon and then got a half an hour to play on the playground. Several PTO parent volunteers helped the students prepare their sundaes. “We have had an awesome parent volunteer turn out today. Our CH parents are wonderful and we thank them for all their help,” said Cathy Flynn, Student Appreciation Day chair. C.H. Campbell Elementary School’s Student Appreciation Day takes place annually at the school to thank the students for being good students and a great school year.

Santoro is district winner

Congressman Bill Johnson recently announced that Alyssa Santoro, a sophomore at Canfield High School, will represent his office in the United States Capitol as a winner in the 2016 Congressional Art Competition, An Artistic Discovery. Santoro’s artwork, titled “Seeing Double,” was done with charcoal. As a district winner, Santoro is invited to participate in a ceremony in late June in Washington D.C. with the other congressional district winners from around the country. Southwest Airlines donated two air tickets to each district winner to be used for travel to and from the ceremony with a parent. Residents of Eastern and Southeastern Ohio will be able to view Santoro’s work while on guided tours of the Capitol building. The artwork of other finalists will be displayed in Representative Johnson’s Ohio offices in Marietta, Salem, Cambridge and Ironton, and in his Washington D.C. office. The students’ artwork was judged by a panel the week of April 25.

Mothers and daughters gathered at the Lariccia Family Community Center at Boardman Park on May 1 for an afternoon of tea, crafts and fashion at the 12th annual Mommy and Me for Tea event. There were two tea times, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Both were sold out with around 45 couples making for 90 people at each tea. The event started off with a light lunch and tea. Following the lunch was craft time, where there were several tables full of different crafts for the guests to make. A professional photographer was there to take pictures of the mother and daughter couples. These pictures could then be put in the frames that the daughters made during craft time. T he daug hters had t he chance to participate in a runway fashion show to bring the tea to an end. The daughters walked down a carpet runway to music and posed at different spots as a description is read aloud to the mothers and other guests. “They get to be a model and mom gets to write all about t hem a nd brag about her daughter,” said Karen McCal-

Hilltop fourth-graders pay tribute to Ohio By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
T he Hi l ltop E lementa r y School fourth-grade class presented An Evening of Art and Music in tribute to the great state of Ohio featuring their performance of “The Buckeye Trivia Show” on May 10. The evening featured displays of artwork from each student and musical selections woven into the trivia show. “Welcome to An Evening of Art and Music. Our fourthgrade students, staff, accompanist Mrs. Gregory and, of course, our music teacher Mr. Scurich and our visual arts teacher Mrs. Leonard, have worked hard to put this show together. It’s an amazing show and we hope you enjoy,” said Joe Maroni, Hilltop Elementary School principal. The event showcased the efforts of the students in visual and performing arts. It also connected visual art and performing arts with fourth-grade social studies. The students’ featured artwork, “The Altered Book Project 2015-16,”which was completed throughout the year in art class taught by Diane Leonard, was on display in the hallways before and after the show. For “The Altered Book Project 2015-16,“ the fourth-graders used old and discarded text books, and upscaled old books into art journals with a theme of “All About Me.” Some of the pages in the art journals offered visual representatives of their lives and included, The Mica Hand - An Ohio Artifact Page, Our Future Colored Bubbles Pages, Woven Through Our Lives Pages, Cardinal Pages, Stamped Into Our Hearts Pages, Watercolor Secrets Pages, But Wait - Let me Take a Selfie Page, QR Code Pages and A Page a Day. The performing arts portion of the show was under the direction of Tom Scurich, Hilltop Elementary School music teacher. Musical selections, several of which honored the state of Ohio, included “The Star Spangled Banner,” “FiftyNifty United States,” “Down the River,” “Follow the Drinking Gourd,” “Ohio is My Home,” “Hang on Sloopy,” “This Land

The production had a cast of students playing the roles of emcees, contestants, a stage manager, a scorekeeper, a camera man and an applause sign holder. During ’commercial breaks’
several students from each class had speaking roles, which focused on Ohio history, such as facts about famous Ohioans, the Underground Railroad, the Great Seal of the State of Ohio, the state’s first capitol, Native American Indian tribes, Harriet Beecher Stowe, the naming of areas of the state and biographical information on the eight presidents from Ohio. The students were dressed in matching T-shirts, which were designed by a member of their class, and had each student’s signature on the back.

The Rich Center for Autism received a generous donation on May 12 from students who attend Mahoning Country Career and Technical Center. Kayla Windsor, Rachel Perkins and Ty Cook, students from MCCTC, decided to have a book drive for their Honors English class project. The students were divided into groups and had to come up with a community service project that involved donating their time, volunteering and receiving items for donations. “We chose to do a book drive because I like kids and everyone was mutual on what we wanted to do,” said Windsor. The students decorated boxes and spread them out around the Poland, Struthers, Boardman, Lowelville and West Branch ar-
eas. The boxes were out from April 11-30, in honor of National Autism Awareness Month. “They have been piling up in my living room, almost to the ceiling,” said Windsor about the boxes full of books. Windsor, Perkins and Cook contacted the Rich Center and asked if they would be willing to partner with the students for the fundraiser. The Rich Center received over $2,700 worth of toys, 558 books and $50 worth of monetary donations. After bringing in all of the donations, the MCCTC students had the opportunity to visit the students, read to them and play with them and their new toys. “Thank you to everyone who donated books and a huge thank you to Maui Toys. They’re the ones who donated all the toys.” said Windsor.

Happily Ever After Palmas 50th observed with surprise trip The children of Matthew and Madlyn Palma of Boardman honored their parents with a surprise luxury vacation to the Bellagio Resort Hotel in Las Vegas for their 50th wedding anniversary. Mr. Palma married the former Madlyn Murphy on May 28, 1966, at St. Christine Church, Youngstown. Their children are Jillene Palma of Orange County, Calif., and Mark Palma of Concord, Ohio. They also have two grandchildren. The couple are members of St. Charles Church. Mrs. Palma retired from Metropolitan Bank in Youngstown, where she worked as a branch manager. Her husband retired as a buyer from Stop & Shop Grocery stores in Cleveland. He is a U.S. Army veteran and served in Korea.
