HONEY
Bit came into the West Side Cats shelter without much background on her. She is a cute female gray cat, roughly around 4 1/2 years-old. She loves to be petted and gets along with the other cats at the shelter. She would most likely get along with school-age children and adults, but they are not sure about little ones. The shelter does not know how she would feel about dogs. All in all, Bit is a very nice, friendly little girl. Stop by West Side Cats to see her.
Honey is a sweet-tempered 3-year-old mix breed that currently weighs about 30 pounds. She is housebroken and very well behaved, as well as loving, although she needs a cat free home. If you have a resident dog, you will need to bring it with you when you come to meet Honey. Please PM Pawz 2 Adopt on their Facebook page for more information.

Poland library creates cupcake decorators By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Poland library hosted a Frosted event on May 5 for guests to learn different techniques dealing in how to frost a cupcake. The event was led by Poland librarian Missy Williams and Main librarians Marnie Alvarez and Nicole DeNiro. DeNiro, who bakes outside of her job at the Main library, has entered and won different awards at the Sweet Life Cupcake Competition hosted by the Friends of Mahoning Valley Birth Center. “I’ve entered the amateur divisions. I won third place for Pregnancy Cravings two years ago and last year I won first place in the wedding category. I made a mini three-tiered wedding cake,” said DeNiro. The librarians demonstrated how to use four different frosting piping tips: the round tip, an
open star tip, a closed star tip and a french tip. Parchment paper was laid out across the tables for the guests to practice piping different designs with the different tips. “The open star tip is one of the most popular ones. It’s kind of fancy and the one most commonly used,” said Alvarez. When the guests felt comfortable using the piping bags and tips, Alvarez passed out two cupcakes to each person. Those attending could decorate the cupcakes however they liked using yellow and pink frosting and a variety of sprinkles. Alvarez passed out little flags in honor of Cinco de Mayo for decorations to put on top. Guests brought a container to bring their cupcakes home in Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci and a pamphlet with the different types of tips used was printed Librarian Marnie Alvarez passed out cupcakes for the guests to decoout for guests to also take home. rate using the different techniques they learned at the Frosted event at the Poland library on May 5.

Students participate in a day of play By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Dave Pavlansky Field was the home of the first DAWG Day for Dobbins Elementary School students on May 6. Do Act Wonder Grow (DAWG) Day was designed to help encourage the students at Dobbins to think about the choices they make. Tammy Todd, a parent volunteer for the wellness committee, and Cathy Fedor, the school nurse, worked together
to create this event for the students. The idea started about three years ago when the parents started to discuss areas that the students could be given more education in and school involvement that includes health and wellness. It took about six months of planning to make everything come together. Food service director Barb Walker was an important person on the planning committee. “This is our first event that
we’ve done outside that involves the entire school of Dobbins,” said Todd. The morning started out with a guest reader, Colin Reardon, a Poland alumnus and current Kent State University football player. Reardon read the book “Oh The Things You Can Do That Are Good for You!” by Tish Rabe. There were 12 stations that the Dobbins students could visit, put on by faculty and See PLAY, Page 6

Daughters become models at Mother’s Day tea By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Mothers and daughters gathered at the Lariccia Family Community Center at Boardman Park on May 1 for an afternoon of tea, crafts and fashion at the 12th annual Mommy and Me for Tea event. There were two tea times, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Both were sold out with around 45 couples making for 90 people at each tea.
The event started off with a light lunch and tea. Following the lunch was craft time, where there were several tables full of different crafts for the guests to make. A professional photographer was there to take pictures of the mother and daughter couples. These pictures could then be put in the frames that the daughters made during craft time. The daughters had the chance to participate in a runway fashion show to bring the tea to an end. The daughters walked

other volunteers who donated their time and knowledge to the event. Lauren Mechling, the elementary school guidance counselor, led a relaxation station for the students to learn relaxation techniques, Officer Steve Kent taught students a lesson on bike safety and people from the community outreach program at Akron Children’s Hospital hosted three stations. “We tried to gear it toward coming up for summer and health in general,” said Fedor. Around 50 Poland Seminary High School students volunteered time out of their day to help the Dobbins students with their outdoor activities. The students served as mentors for the younger students to show the importance of health and wellness. This event was an opportunity to incorporate students from all ages in the Poland school district. After the students visited their stations, the students headed back to Dobbins for a picnic-style lunch. The Food Wheel of Fortune was taken to each table for the students to spin and sample new and healthy foods. “It’s just a fun day for everyone to learn different aspects of health and wellness. Get them outside, get them more active,” said Todd.

Jeff Hvizdos, music teacher at McKinley Elementary, directed the sixth-grade students during their performances at the Spring Band Concert on May 10 at Poland Seminary High School.
Students play the sounds of spring By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
McKinley Elementary School put on their Spring Band Concert at Poland Seminary High School on May 10. Before the fifth- and sixthgrade students performed, they stood up row by row for their parents to come up and takes pictures. The fifth- and sixth-grade band members put on two separate performances and each band performed five songs. The ending songs for both bands were music from “Star Wars.” The fifth-grade band per-
formed a piece called “Meet the Band,” which they played without a conductor. Thomas Brucoli, a music teacher at McKinley Elementary, taught the students the song. “The amazing thing I think about these kids is the fact that you have 90 plus students out here without a conductor. That’s a credit to how hard they’ve worked and it’s also a credit to how brave Mr. Brucoli is. Spectacular job,” said music teacher Jeff Hvizos. The students have been practicing for weeks to prepare for the concert. They practiced at school and at home so they
would have a solid performance and have had support from their teachers, faculty and families. Every year the students make a choice to participate in band or choir, but for the upcoming year students will have a third option. Fifth-graders going into sixth grade will have the choice to be part of both band and choir. They will spend a couple days a week at band and a couple at choir. The sixth-graders going into seventh grade will have band five days a week, but if they want to join choir, they will be able to participate one day a week.
