Readers treated to Spectacular Magic Show By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

The Michael Kusalaba library hosted the Supernatural, Intergalatical Summer Reading Spectacular Magic Show on June 7. Magician Jeff Wawrzazek hosted the show, combining magic and reading for a unique experience. “Having the library available is what allowed me to become a

magician,” Wawrzazek said. He explained that he learned his first magic trick from a library book, and has been coming to the library to learn about magic ever since. “They’re important, they’re detrimental to children’s learning,” Wawrzazek said. “But more than that, I want to show that library can be fun.” During the event Wawrzazek put on a number of tricks for the

audience. More than 35 children and their families watched as Wawrzazek used cards, rope and other tools to create different tricks. Calling up volunteers from the audience, a number of children got to participate in the show. Wawrzazek gave all of them space themed gifts for their assistance. Librarian Allison Graf said that the event perfectly fit the

theme of this years summer reading program, A Universe of Stories. Throughout the event Wawrzazek encouraged children to use the resources at their disposal at the library. “He really is great, and it’s always a fun show to watch,” Graf said. Community members create GOT necklaces By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

Community members channeled their inner royalty at the Austintown library on April 23. Librarian Renee Beverly organized a “Game of Thrones” necklace making event to celebrate the last season of the popular show. “It’s just such a cool story and a lot of people are invested in it,” Beverly said. “Myself included.” Beverly said she is a fan, and keeps up with the show, but that many people who had never watched it also were in attendance. “We have some fans, and some people who have never seen it, so there is a cool mix,” she said. During the event community members used tacks that Beverly colored with nail polish to create a dragon egg pendant. The tacks were pressed into a foam ball, and attached to a chain. After the construction of the necklace Beverly applied Modge Podge to the necklaces to keep

The character Daenerys Targaryen of the House Targaryen of Dragonstone has three dragons in the show, which was the inspiration for the necklaces. “It’s just a fun way to get into the show,” Beverly said. “I thought it was a really great idea.”

Austintown Fitch hosts Senior Citizen dinner By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

A u s t i nt o w n F it c h H i g h School hosted the biannual Senior Citizen Dinner on April 24. Community members 65 and older were treated to a dinner and performance by Austintown High School students for $2. “It’s a great way to bring the community into the school and have them see everything we have to offer here,” said Superintendent Vincent Colaluca. The event was started more than 25 years ago according to long time school board member Joyce Pogany. Pogany explained that while she was on the board the school was having a hard time with levies being turned down. “It was important because

people in the community no longer had students in the school, so they didn’t see the value in funding it,” Pogany said. That was when the school board came up with the idea to host a dinner to engage older members of the community. She explained that after the first year of the event, the levy was passed and has continued to be renewed ever since. “We wanted to engaged the community and show them what the school had to offer,” Pogany said. “That’s exactly what we did.” According to Brittany Bueno, Austintown communication specialist who organized the event, about 350 community members were in attendance. Twenty students and teachers from Austintown volunteered to assist during the

event, taking the time to serve community members dinner. Austintown food services cooked a dinner of Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes and vegetables for seniors to enjoy, along with dessert.
