Father’s Day cake decorating event offered Decorate your own Dairy Queen cake for Father’s Day at this event on June 15 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Boardman Dairy Queen (6120 Market St,), Canfield Dairy Queen (101 S.Broad St,) and Cornersburg Dairy Queen (3555 S. Balto: a history of humans, huskies and health in Alaska The library is bringing the Cleveland Museum of Natural History to you. Join in with the Boardman library on July 24 at 2 p.m. as we learn about the story of Balto and the heroic dogs and mushers of the 1925 Alaskan Serum Run, and compare their experience to the Iditarod of today through video conferencing with the museum.

They will have a kit of equipment used to enable humans and huskies to survive in harsh arctic conditions to examine during the show. Space is limited.

Barn yard petting zoo A trailer full of animals is coming to the Boardman library parking lot for three hours on July 11, from 5-8 p.m.

All animals are safe and secure within their own space in the trailer and sanitary hand-cleanser is provided to be used after petting the animals. Play lawn games and have a treat as you wait to enter the petting zoo, which has a minimum of 16 animals. A rain date will be announced, if needed.

The event features 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Gamblers Anonymous Meetings If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help.

Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature.

The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-anda-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.

Boardman Park hosts annual Music in the Park concert

The Boardman Park kicked off their annual Music in the Park program with a performance by the Del Sinchak Band on June 6.

Community members gathered at the park, bringing lawn

chairs and blankets, to listen to the band perform.

“This is one of the bands that we have come every year,” said Karen McCallum, the park’s recreation director.

She explained that the Del Sinchak Band have been long time supporters of the park, and even sponsored concerts in the

past.

The band played a variety of polka music for those gathered.

“It’s a fun and casual event for anyone who wants to attend,” McCallum said.

The event is free, and is hosted at the parks Maag Outdoor Theatre from 7-8:30 p.m.

Performances are scheduled

once a week through Aug. 22.

Sponsors for the program this year include Pepsi, The Debartolo Corporation, the Boardman Rotary, Boardman Subaru, Phantom Fireworks and Aqua.

POLICE REPORTS May 30 False alarms: A man reportedly twice called police – once to report a group of juveniles smoking marijuana in a parking lot in the 1300 block of Doral Drive, then to claim they were about to fight one another in the same area. Neither proved true, however, and the caller may have been upset because the teens left his car club, a report indicated.

Theft: Officers were sent to the Trumbull County jail to pick up Joshua D. Zickefoose, 40, of Clifton Avenue Northeast, Warren, who was wanted on a theft warrant. Zickefoose was accused of stealing two T-shirts May 10 from Kohl’s, 383 Boardman-Poland Road.

Theft: A man reportedly stole $19 worth of items that included a pair of jeans from Walmart, 1300 Doral Drive.

Harassment: A Massachusetts Avenue woman told officers that starting last month, a male her daughter had dated placed unwanted messages on the daughter’s Facebook page.

Theft: Authorities were dispatched to Boardman Area Court on Market Street to take custody of Charly A. Quesada, 38, of Saranac Avenue, Youngstown, who was charged after police alleged Quesada left Burlington Coats, 529 Boardman-Canfield Road, on May 6 wearing a $45 pair of shoes he had not paid for.

Theft: Daniel W. Skruck of East Judson Avenue, Youngstown, faced a charge after police accused Skruck, 35, of stealing 10 pieces of construction equipment and a $299 drill kit from Home Depot, 7001 Southern Blvd.

Theft by deception: An Angiline Drive woman told officers she had received a series of calls from someone claiming to represent Microsoft Corp. who demanded she satisfy an outstanding $299 bill, supposedly for an operating system. After refusing several times to pay it,

the caller claimed that to make up for the inconvenience, $1,300 would be deposited into her bank account, but that she first needed to purchase a $1,000 Best Buy gift card, which she refused to do, and could keep the rest before she noticed $1,300 had been deposited into then removed from the account.

Theft: Gerard W. Susa, 66, of East Pasadena Avenue, Youngstown, surrendered on a theft charge, related to a May 3 shoplifting situation in which $117 worth of cleaning products and food was stolen from Giant Eagle, 1201 Doral Drive.

Theft: A girl about age 12 and two women in their mid-20s reportedly stole 20 articles of clothing, including three T-shirts, from Kohl’s.

Theft: Andrew L. Locke, 35, of Deerfield, was charged with leaving Red Lobster, 1410 Boardman-Poland Road, without paying a food bill.

Harassment: A South Schenley Avenue woman said her soon-to-be former husband has sent and made several weeks’ worth of unwanted text messages and calls to her.

Theft: The front license plate was stolen off a vehicle in the 4000 block of South Avenue.

Theft: A man reportedly stole miscellaneous food and drink items from Walmart.

May 31 Arrest: After having responded to a family argument at a Larkridge Avenue residence, police near Lake Park Road pulled over a motorcycle and charged Denis W. Davis, 44, of Larkridge, Boardman, with operating a vehicle impaired. Davis registered a 0.12 bloodalcohol content, slightly above Ohio’s 0.08 legal intoxication limit, a report showed.

Aggravated menacing: An employee with a Stadium Drive transmission shop alleged a man and a woman arrived and threatened to beat him up, evidently regarding a remaining payment that needed to be made for another person’s vehicle repairs.

Assault: A Fort Wayne, Ind., man told police that while in a restaurant at a South Avenue motel, a man came to his booth and shoved him after a second man reportedly had given the accuser’s wife unwanted attention.

Theft: An Austintown woman reported her purse, $113 and several credit and debit cards stolen from her vehicle in the 300 block of Boardman-Poland Road.

Theft: Samantha Y. Stewart, 34, of Denver Drive, Lake Milton, was charged in the theft of $44 worth of property that included an $11 pair of sunglasses from Walmart.

Burglary: A Lockwood Boulevard woman told officers that while speaking to a neighbor, she saw a figure exit her front door and enter the neighbor’s home. The accuser also reportedly found two shell casings in her garage, and police said they found five bullet holes in a nearby attic door. Missing from the garage was a $20 video camera.

Threats: A Loma Vista Drive woman alleged her former boyfriend, in violation of a protection order she had filed against him, came to her place of employment and, when she refused to allow him in, threatened to kill her.

Theft/criminal mischief: Someone in the 700 block of Orlo Lane entered an unlocked vehicle, in which various contents were strewn about. Items missing included an electronic pad and miscellaneous papers.

Boardman students recognized at Holocaust Commemoration Neighbors | Submitted

Four Boardman High School students were honored at the Jewish Community Relations Council’s annual Holocaust Commemoration Program. It took place at the Mahoning County Courthouse on May 2. Sara Varga won first place in the Poetry Division (11-12 grade), Jakob Peters won second place in the Poetry Division. Beckwith earns All-Ohio honors Sophomore Micah Beckwith earned All-Ohio honors in two seated events at the OHSAA State Championship at Jesse Owens Stadium on the campus of The Ohio State University.

Beckwith has earned All-Ohio status in all four seated events the past two seasons.

Beckwith began the weekend on Friday morning by placing ninth overall in the seated shot put. Beckwith also had a prelim in the seated 800 and then endured a four hour weather delay before his other prelims were cancelled. Saturday morning Beckwith placed ninth overall in the seated 800, later that day he placed 8th in the seated 400-earning his first medal of the day. Beckwith finished the day in the late afternoon with an 8th place finish in the seated 100 wrapping up his second medal, and second straight year being All Ohio in the seated 100.

“Micah had a long weekend,” explained Spartan Head Coach John Phillips. “He was at the track over 11 hours on Friday due to the weather delay and then another 8 hours on Saturday. Despite all of that, he put together a very impressive weekend and is an All-Ohioan for the second straight year.”

Arrest: Authorities responded to a 911 call regarding a fight in the 4500 block of Grover Drive, where they charged Nechelle M. Johnson, 27, of Grover, Boardman, with obstructing official business. Several times Johnson refused to open her door for officers, who were attempting to ascertain whether anyone inside had been injured, a report stated.

Theft: A Youngstown man who went to a Market Street business to buy a $117 money order left and realized he had apparently been shortchanged $100.

Theft by deception: A woman in the Dunkin Donuts drive-thru, 1301 Boardman-Poland Road, reportedly bought $4 worth of merchandise with a $50 bill later shown to be counterfeit. In addition, video surveillance purportedly showed the same person committing the same crime a few days earlier at the business, a police report said.

June 1 Arrest: Officers answered a call pertaining to a dispute in a parking lot in the 1100 block of Doral Drive, where they took Diaysha V. Jones, 19, into custody. Jones, of Spring Street, Struthers, was wanted on a Campbell warrant charging her with violating a court order.

Criminal damaging: A Lockwood Boulevard woman called police after saying someone placed an unknown small device atop her car and before officers discovered the device had been screwed into the roof.

Theft: Two men and a woman in their 20s reportedly stole $200 worth of clothing from Walmart.

Theft: Dvaille L. Williams Jr., 24, of West Evergreen Avenue, Youngstown, was charged, accused of stealing a $7 sweatshirt from Walmart.

Domestic violence: A 12-year-old Boardman girl faced a charge after her father alleged that during an argument that apparently began when he forbade her from using a family computer, the girl shoved him into a dining-room table.

Theft: Two males in their late teens or early 20s reportedly stole $726 worth of property, such as a DVD player, from Walmart.

Theft: A man in his 50s reportedly took $149 worth of meat products from Walmart.

Weapon: Officers received information that a Homestead Drive residence had been struck by a bullet before they found a .22-caliber bullet wedged in an area near a damaged rear slidingglass door. During the investigation, a juvenile who lives at the home admitted having accidentally discharged the firearm, though no one was injured, a report showed.

June 2 Arrest: Police answered a call regarding a property report at a Hillman Way apartment before arresting Darell L. Perez, 33, of that address.

Athletes compete at track state championship The Boardman boys track team sent junior Dave Merdich and sophomore Micah Beckwith to the 2019 OHSAA State Championship at Jesse Owens Stadium on the campus of The Ohio State University.

Merdich earned his first trip to the state meet by placing fifth overall in the shot put with a throw of 52 feet and 11.75 inches.

However, Merdich’s achievement was not without its share of drama. The OHSAA this season has instituted two ‘Wild Card’ selections in field events after adding them to running events in 2018. By finishing fifth, Merdich had to wait over an hour until the results of the other three regions were final to find out if he had indeed qualified to state.

“I am so happy for Dave,” said Boardman Head Coach John Phillips. “To go through all the anxiety of having to wait to see if you make it is rough, but Dave stayed positive and everything worked out in the end. Dave has worked very hard the last few seasons in the shot ring and the weight room to get to Columbus, he has definitely earned this honor. I am also thrilled for our throws coach, John Pallini, on qualifying his first regional athlete to Columbus after being so close for so many years. Coach Pallini does an excellent job and deserves a trip to state as well.”

The Boardman man was wanted on a bench warrant accusing him of failing to appear in Youngstown Municipal Court.

Theft: A man reportedly switched price tags on five items while in Walmart, then self-scanned the merchandise for the lower prices.

Theft: Walmart surveillance footage reportedly captured a man stealing $102 worth of property that included a 1-gallon container of laundry detergent.

June 3 Arrest: A traffic stop near Market Street and Indianola Road resulted in the arrest of Maurice D. Willis, 50, of Southern Boulevard, Boardman, on a charge of operating a vehicle impaired.

Willis, who has two OVI convictions within the last six years, refused to submit to breath and urine tests, a report indicated.

Criminal mischief: A car on Hudson Avenue was found with a broken passenger-side window.

The repair estimate was $250.

Burglary: To a residence in the 60 block of Shadyside Drive after a rear door had been forced open. Stolen were $625, a 65-inch TV and a variety of jewelry, for a $3,775 loss, a report said.

Counterfeit: A woman reportedly paid for $12 worth of merchandise at Office Max, 427 Boardman-Poland Road, with a phony $100 bill.

Breaking and entering: Someone entered a shed on Shadyside Drive and removed two snow blowers, a boat anchor and fenders and two life jackets. The loss was calculated at $1,020.

Theft: Lauryn N. Murrell, 19, and Taelyn T. Rose, 20, faced theft charges after authorities alleged the two Pittsburgh women stole $477 worth of undergarments and other items from the JCPenney store in Southern Park Mall. Rose also was charged with possessing criminal tools when, police said, she had a piece of lining wrapped in foil and a garbage bag that allowed security sensors on some of the stolen merchandise to be bypassed.

Theft: Destiny V. Casey of Palmer Avenue, Youngstown, was charged after officers alleged Casey, 23, intentionally failed to self-scan 26 items, including socks, valued at $218 while in

Beckwith earned All-Ohio honors in three events last season and will look to add to his medal count this weekend. The expansion of the seated division in Ohio will result in Friday prelims for Beckwith in the 100, 400 and 800 where the top 2 in each race and the next 5 fastest times overall will advance to Saturday’s finals.

Beckwith will begin his Friday with a final in the seated shot put prior to the racing prelims.

“Micah is going to be very busy on Friday and hopefully, if all goes well, Saturday too. His experience last year at state has prepared him for the workload he is going to have this year. He is a very dedicated athlete and works very hard on the track, in the ring, and in the weight room all year,” said Phillips.

Also scoring for the Spartans at the regional meet were junior Mitchel Dunham in the 1600 with a career-best time of 4:21 which placed sixth overall, and sophomore Ted Anzevino with a careerbest vault of 13 feet in the pole vault to also place sixth.

The 4x800 relay team of sophomore Frank Bero, sophomore Jonah Bacho, senior Payton Torres and Dunham placed eighth with a time of 8:09.

event started after a school project that had children looking into their future careers.

“They did a project and researched a career they may be interested in,” Handel said. “So I thought why not bring in someone from the real world to talk with them about it.”

The event kicked off with a mass, where each alumni spoke to students about their history and their chosen careers.

Students were given a list of profession and marked their top four choices.

Then each alumni was seated at a table where they met with a small group of students at a time.

Handel said that students listened to the alumni talk about their chosen profession and were able to ask them ques-

tions.

“They get to hear exactly what it takes to get to that career,” Handel said. “The alumni discuss what they did in school and what classes they took.”

Handel said that the only structure the school provided was a short list of information they suggested the alumni go over.

“We want the students to lead the conversation, and for the alumni to discuss with them the reality of their jobs,” Handel said.

A variety of careers were present at the event, including nurses, lawyers, police officers and meteorologists.

“We are so thankful for all of our local alumni for coming into the school and talking with our students,” Handel said.

Sam and Nancy Motsko of Poland recently were honored for their 60th anniversary with a pizza and wine party at A Time to Dance in Niles. The celebration was hosted by friends of the couple.

The couple’s children are Kathy (Barry) Swoboda of Poland; John (Michele) Motsko of Panacea, Fla.; and Sam Motsko Jr. of Struthers. Five grandchildren and one great-grandchild complete their family.

Mr. Motsko married the former Nancy Harklerode on May 16, 1959, at John Hus Lutheran Church in Youngstown.

Mrs. Motsko was a pharmacy clerk at Wittenauer Pharmacy in Poland until she retired in 2002.
