Ca n f ield V i l lage M idd le School fifth-grade students participated in two days of STEM activities, during which they experienced hands-on experiments and were exposed to a variety of STEM fields, on May 20-21. The event was sponsored by Canfield PTA. Six stations were set up by parent and community volunteers for the students to visit and learn about science, technology, engineering and math. Julie Miller was set up at a science station to teach the students about the teeth of omnivores, carnivores and herbivores using animal skulls. The students could pick up and examine the skulls to figure out which classification of animal it came from. A math station was manned by Bill Stilson, retired Austintown Fitch teacher, who instructed the students to use two cubes to calculate the volume of a life-size box. At the other math station, students used body mapping to calculate the perimeter of shapes taped on the gym floor. Students used their arms, hand and legs as measurements. At the technology station was

an augmented reality sandbox, courtesy of the Ohio Farm Bureau and the Mahoning County Soil and Water District. The topography of the land was projected onto the sand, and the students could alter the topography by moving the sand. “This is a totally new concept for our fifth-graders. They will learn more about topography in sixth grade. This station is sensory. They can play in the sand
and move it all around and see how the topography changes,” Mandy Harris said. One engineering station was set up by Dave Harris of DPH Architecture of Canfield. At this station, the children were tasked with building a self-supporting bridge out of blocks and metal plates. The final station was a combination of science and engineering, at which students attempt-
ed to guide a laser through a maze using mirrors. The students’ met their goal of getting the laser though the maze if the completion signal lit up at the end of the maze. “If the students get through the maze quickly, obstacles are added to make it more challenging. Another great aspect of this station is that the students are working together to succeed,” Harris said.

Canfield’s Angels for Animals hosted a Lasagna Dinner fundraiser on May 3. Angels for Animals founder Diane Less said that the money raised at the dinner will be used to help finance a lawn mower. “We have a volunteer who would be willing to do the work,” Less said. “Right now it costs us a lot of money each time we need it done.” During the event, community members lined up in their
cars to purchase lasagna dinners that came with rolls and salads. Angels for Animals volunteers ushered the food from the building to cars as they passed, so community members never had to exit their vehicles. All of the food for the event was made by Dave and Sheri Kissinger, along with Debbie and Russel Pugh. Sheri said that the group worked to cook enough lasagna for 200 people. “We just baked a lot of lasa-
gna, and other volunteers will plate the food and put together the meals,” Kissinger said. Dinners cost $10 each and fed four people. Along with the dinners Angels for Animals offered a gift card and lottery ticket raffle. Community members could buy a number of tickets to be entered to win any of five gift cards or 12 different lottery tickets. Less said that the this is the first time that Angels for Animals has done a lasagna dinner, though they have held similar
events selling spaghetti and pancakes to the community. “Everything we do is to reach our overall goal, which is to end the needless death and suffering of companion animals,” Less said. “I believe we will accomplish this.” She explained that Angels for Animals in unique, because unlike many shelters they don’t turn animals away. CHS students participate in annual Civic Day By ABBY SLANKER aslanker@vindy.com
The 39th annual Civic Day, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Canfield, took place with 39 Canfield High School juniors and seniors assuming the roles of city, township and school officials on May 3. The day was organized by Canfield High School government teachers Todd Muckleroy and Mike Pavlansky and provided the students an opportunity to become familiar with the workings of their local government. Each student was assigned an official from Canfield City Council, Canfield Schools or Canfield Township to shadow during the day. For example, Joe Bruno took over the role of Mayor R icha rd Duf fett, Anthony Biondillo took over the role of City Attorney Mark Fortunato, Blake Naleck took over the role of City Zoning
Inspector Mike Cook, Audra Pesko took over the role of Fiscal Officer Carmen Heasley, Brandon Hudock took over for Township Trustee Marie IzzoCartwright, Michael Prather took over the role of School Superintendent A lex Geordan, Nick Crawford took over the role of School Board Vice President Craig Olson, A lly Stein took over the role of Director of Curriculum and Instruction John Tullio and Brent Herrmann took over the role of C.H. Campbell Elementary School Principal Travis Lavery. Civic Day started at the Canfield Local Schools Board Office where the students were greeted by Superintendent Alex Geordan. “You are t he reason why our school system is where it is today. We can’t appreciate you and your families enough. Without the support of you and your families, we can’t do what
we do on a daily basis,” Geordan told the students. School board Vice President Craig Olson thanked the students for participating in Civic Day. “You will find out when you leave Canfield Schools how well prepared you really are. Thank you for participating today and on behalf of the Canfield Rotary and the school board, we welcome you,” Olson said. The students then proceeded to conduct a mock school board meeting with their official counterparts. The school officials helped the students u nder st a nd how a school board meeting is conducted and explained policies and procedures for the meeting. Following roll call and the Pledge of Allegiance, the students discussed the new business of Life After Canfield Day for seniors.
Geordan opened the discussion amongst the board members. “The focus of Life After Canfield Day is what else can we give you to succeed. We want you to arm yourselves with tools for when you leave home. We will have Canfield alumni come back and talk about situations you may face in college. We will also have the Canfield Police Department on hand with tips on how to change a tire and self defense. We will cover finances, such as student loans and credit cards. We are going to try it this year and get better at it and make it a tradition,” Geordan said. After the discussion, the student school board members voted to carry the motion. Nex t, t he student school
board members approved Resolution #1-2019, declaring May 3, 2019, Civic Day. A motion to adjourn was made and seconded, dismissing the students. The students then took a tour of Canfield Village Middle School and were given a tour of the police and fire stations. The students walked over to the Canfield Municipal Building where they were welcomed by Mayor Duffett and members of City Council. The students then traveled to the Canfield Township Hall where a mock trustee meeting took place. To close out the day, the Rotary Club of Canfield hosted a luncheon for the students and city, township and school officials at St. Michael’s Church.
