Supper at the Corner Smith Corners United Methodist Church, located at 3000 S. Canfield Niles Road (on the corner of Kirk Road and State Route 46) in Austintown, will host a Supper at the Corner event on June 21 from 4:30-6 p.m.

Hopewell Theatre has auditions for upcoming show The Hopewell Theatre announced auditions for “Moon Over Buffalo,” a screwball comedy filled with slapstick, misunderstandings, love, romance, infidelity and mistaken identity. Auditions will take place on June 18 at 6 p.m. at the theater, located at 702 Mahoning Ave. Cast requirements are as follows: male, 50’s, able to do strong physical comedy, pratfalls, etc.; female, 50’s, able to do British accent; female, 70’s, needs strong comedic skills; female, late 20’s, able to do British accent; female (20’s), ingénue; two males, late 20’s, able to do strong physical comedy; male, 50’s, wealthy and used to getting what he wants. Library celebrates National Doughnut Day

The Austintown library invited families to their large meeting room on June 1 for National Doughnut Day. Austintown librarian Amy Wiand organized the “Hooray for Doughnut Day!� program, where children participated in multiple games and crafts. Each of the families got a doughnut at the event. “I wanted to have something fun and celebrate doughnut day,

and you can always incorporate books,� said Wiand. She wanted to give the young children a fun program after finishing the school year earlier in the way. “It’s fun seeing them have fun,� she said.

The families all started the program at a table where they decorated doughnuts. The children began with a plain doughnut and covered it in frosting and sprinkles.

After they made their doughnut, they moved on to the

Seventh-grader presents and signs her book

A seventh-grade student author gave a presentation on her book and her experience on May 22 at Austintown Middle School.

Reagan Nevels, a student at the middle school, presented about what she believes are the four principles one needs to succeed. She published her book “Vision Collision” earlier this year.

She outlined her concepts for success. First, people need to think about what they want to give to the world. Second, they

need to write what they want to accomplish. She also suggested making a vision board of images and writings to motivate.

Third, people need to believe that they will reach their goal.

She said to remain positive, using the example of Gabby Douglas beginning her life in an underprivileged environment and moving on to become an Olympic medalist. Lastly, people have to go out and achieve their goals.

She listed details for each of the principles during her presentation. She gave her talk in

the school’s cafetorium while a projection screen down to display her slideshow.

She gave the presentation to all of the students in the school throughout the day. At night, she hosted a book signing after giving the speech again. She also presents at other schools and other locations in the area.

She began her journey in book writing during a Church of God and Christ convention in July last of year. The program and author Lawanne S. Grant sponsored a book writing competition and Nevels chose to participate.

Fitch high school had a dedication ceremony for the opening of their Purple Star Room by the Veteran’s Memorial in front of the school. The school has been certified as Purple Star School by the ODE, meaning they have been recognized for their efforts in helping local veterans.

Austintown Fitch High School celebrated the opening of their Purple Star Room on May 15 with school officials and local veterans.

The Purple Star Room gives a space for students with family in the military to decompress and a room for the district to have military-related events for the community’s veterans. The room is named for the Purple Star Award, a recent recognition that the Ohio Department of Education awarded to the school for being a militaryfriendly school.

“It’s not about the recognition, it’s about helping kids,” said Junior Principal Jim Penk.

Local veterans met in the school to see the new room. The

school provided light snacks for the group. The school also had a dedication in the front of the school at the Veteran’s Memorial.

The students with family in the military, known as their Purple Star Students, will have the opportunity to have a video chat with a loved one currently serving overseas, receive counseling or to find comfort during the school day. The school has approximately 30 students with military families, and the district overall has between 50 and 80 in any given year.

Fitch has a Purple Star Committee dedicated to meeting the needs of the Purple Star Students. The committee includes principals Chris Berni and Penk, Community Engagement Specialist Brittany Bueno, bus drivers Cynthia Clemens and

Nicole Morrison, bus aide Krystal Clemens, teacher Kristen O’Neil, paraprofessional Laura Haupt, former board member Ken Jakubec and community member Leo Connelly.

Jakubec noted that Fitch is listed as one of three examples on the ODE’s official website for Purple Star Schools. The school has numerous veteran events during the school year, such as the veteran lunch and a Veteran’s Day assembly.

The room also features artwork from Ray Simon that commemorates the military and those who serve. The painting donors include Denise and John York, Walter Terlecky, Joseph E. Lane, Fitch Class of 1962, Greenwood Chevrolet, Karlock Podiatry and Associates, Betras, Kopp & Harshman and Lawrence and Dolores Ronzi.

AES art show displays talents of second grade

Aust i ntow n E lementa r y School hosted an art show for the second-grade students at the school on May 9.

Art teachers Lauren Sheridan and Andra LaMarca decided to showcase the artwork as a farewell to the students and to promote the arts, as the second grade is the ending grade in the school since the intermediate school houses the third grade students.

“Austintown supports the arts from the bottom up,” said LaMarca. The exhibit was their way of supporting the students’ creative and artistic sides.

They had at least one piece from every student in the second grade, totalling near 750 pieces. They set up the projects by classroom, so many of the same pieces of art were near each other. They had a discussion question near each set of projects. They also had a photo

area for the parents to take pictures of their children.

The show took place in the gymnasium, which was filled tight with attendees. Sheridan said she was pleased with the “awesome turn out” and said that it is great seeing parents support the students.

Each student in the school has art once a week throughout the full school year. The teachers try to expose the students to various types of art.

The Austintown library had a “Smart Money Picture Bingo” program on April 28 to teach children to recognize different types of money.

different ways to play bingo and helped them identify coins and bills. The children got treats for winning the game.

“It prepares them for counting and money recognition,” said Cowles. She drew different pictures that matched with the bingo cards. The pictures had

different amounts of money on them, such as “three nickels” and “four $1 bills.”

They played different variations of bingo, including playing across, diagonally and getting the four corners covered.

The children had their choice of chocolate, cookies or a drink if they won the game.

CLASSIC ROCK CONCERT SERIES 2018

The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley recently announce that it is bringing back and tripling its summer day camp options for children with special needs and their neurotypical friends. Three weeks of two styles of camp will be offered. Dates include June 18-22 (integrated camp for ages 6-13), July 30 until Aug. 3 (full camp and integrated camp for ages 3-22) and Aug. 13-17 (integrated camp for ages 6-13). Camp Friend is unique because the student-to-counselor ratio is extremely low and unmatched to address the intense needs of children and teens on the autism spectrum. As a result, every year interested applicants had to be turned away for lack of enough space. The addition of integrated camp will allow ASMV to serve more families by offering more camper spots. Integrated camp will provide the opportunity for higher-functioning individuals to attend a traditional day camp with our counselors there to assist as they have ideal chance to strengthen their social skills. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.’s full camp will bring back a model of daily activities structured around social skill building themes to provide evidence based instructional opportunities in a fun setting. This, plus traditional summer camp activities like swimming, sports and crafts supported by an autism-qualified staff, provide a supported environment while ensuring an equitable experience. Camp costs $150 per student per week and numerous scholarships are available. D-Day Living History Event set for Aug. 17-18

POLICE REPORTS May 31 Arrest: Officers in the 400 block of South Edgehill Avenue arrested Michelle Doud of Stoneybrook Drive, Hubbard, upon ascertaining Doud, 49, was wanted on a Liberty warrant.

June 1 Arrest: Ritchie S. Miller Jr., who listed Youngstown addresses on East Boston Avenue and Colonial Drive, was taken into custody after police pulled him over near North Four Mile Run Road. Miller was wanted on a Youngstown Municipal Court warrant.

Auto theft: A Ford Mustang was stolen in the 5900 block of Callaway Circle.

Theft: A Baylor Avenue resident reported a credit card stolen.

Criminal damaging: A South Inglewood Avenue resident discovered a vehicle’s brake line had been cut.

June 2 Arrest: Officers responded to a fight at a business in the 4100 block of Mahoning Avenue, where they took Derek L. Carter Jr., 26, into custody. Carter, of Wilson Avenue, Campbell, was wanted on a warrant accusing him of failing to appear in Campbell Municipal Court for a review hearing.

Criminal damaging: A ceiling fan and light were damaged at a business in the 4100 block of Mahoning Avenue.

Theft: Various meat products were stolen from Giant Eagle, 5220 Mahoning Ave. June 3 Arrests: Police were dispatched to an Austintown Plaza parking lot regarding two children left unsupervised in a truck, then arrested Franklin T. Plotts, 45, of Wimber Avenue Northeast, Warren, who was wanted on multiple warrants that included a charge of passing bad checks.

In addition, Cynthia Morrow of Edgehill Avenue Southeast, Warren, faced a felony drug-possession charge.

Employee theft: A worker with a South Four Mile Run Road business reportedly took money.

Theft: An iPhone was reported missing at Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course, 655 N. Canfield-Niles Road.

Theft: An employee with United Freezer & Storage Co., 650 N. Meridian Road, reported various tools were missing.

June 4 Arrest: Police near Mahoning Avenue arrested Kasey L. Wright, 25, of Hopkins Road, Youngstown, who was wanted on a Trumbull County Sheriff’s Department warrant charging her with escape, a felony.

Possible theft: A change purse with $200 and other items was lost or stolen in the 4400 block of Norquest Boulevard.

Misuse of a credit card: A customer reportedly made $4,879 worth of fraudulent charges at Home Depot, 6100 Mahoning Ave. Arrests: Authorities answered a call pertaining to two possibly intoxicated people entering a vehicle at Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course before arresting Thomas G. James Jr., 58, of Harrison Street Northeast, Warren, on a charge of possessing dangerous drugs, and Jeanne A. Jones, 46, of West Market Street, Warren, on a charge of operating a vehicle impaired. James had in his pocket two over-the-counter pills for which he admitted having no prescription, police alleged.

Breaking and entering: Someone broke into a shed at the Saxon Club, 710 S. Meridian Road, and removed a riding mower.

Drugs: A traffic stop near Four Mile Run Road resulted in the arrest of Yaisa E. Quintana-Laboy, 32, of West Calla Road, Salem, on a charge of trafficking in marijuana when, authorities alleged, they found a large bag of suspected marijuana,

two devices to grind marijuana, a digital scale and several empty sandwich bags, material Quintana-Laboy admitted she intended to use to sell the drug. Also taken into custody was Julian Cosme of Philadelphia, who was wanted on a Niles Municipal Court warrant.

Theft: A camera was missing from a residence in the 3400 block of White Beech Lane.

Bad checks: An official with Bob & Chuck Eddy Chrysler Dodge Jeep, 4850 Mahoning Ave., reported having received about $42,223 worth of such checks.

June 5 Criminal damaging: Someone damaged a pull-up cab to a vehicle in the 600 block of South Raccoon Road, evidently in an effort to steal items.

June 6 Drugs: A traffic stop near North Meridian Road resulted in a drug-abuse charge against David M. Daniels, 25, of North Montgomery Avenue, Youngstown. Found were three small suspected marijuana cigarettes and a bag of suspected marijuana Daniels admitted was his, police alleged.

Theft: Someone took a weed trimmer and an edging device from Home Depot, 6100 Mahoning Ave. Theft: A debit card was stolen at a Mahoning Avenue big-box store.

Unauthorized use of a vehicle: A U-Haul truck was taken without permission from a residence in the 100 block of Dehoff Drive.

Employee theft: Peter J. Luchansky, 63, of Steeplechase Drive, Canfield, was charged after a loss-prevention official with Marc’s, 4755 Mahoning Ave., alleged having seen on video surveillance footage Luchansky in a cooler drinking two beverages he failed to pay for. He also was accused of stealing two 1-dozen cartons of eggs from the grocery store.

Theft: Someone removed a bag attachment from a tractor that was on a trailer in the 5600 block of Colgate Drive.

Theft: Items were taken from a car in the 4500 block of Rhode Island Drive.

Criminal damaging: A front screen door sustained damage at a home in the 4200 block of New Road.

Theft: An iPhone was stolen at a tavern in the 3700 block of Oakwood Avenue.

June 7 Arrest: Officers were dispatched to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital to arrest Jennifer L. Almeida, 29, of Matta Avenue, Youngstown, who was wanted on two Austintown warrants, including a felony drug-abuse charge.

Assault: A charge was pending regarding an assault that reportedly took place in the 5500 block of West Webb Road.

Overdose: A person was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after a reported drug overdose in the 40 block of Placid Boulevard.

June 8 Arrest: Police responded to a report of suspicious vehicles in the 4000 block of Lanterman Road, where they took Mary J. Porter, 46, into custody. Porter, of North Navarre Avenue, Austintown, was wanted on a felony warrant from Mahoning County Common Pleas Court charging her with trafficking in drugs.

Fraud: An Ather Drive resident reported having been a victim of an internet scam.

Theft: A man reportedly stole $186 worth of meat products from Giant Eagle, 5220 Mahoning Ave. Theft: Howard G. Ahart of Lloyd Avenue, Youngstown, was charged with stealing about $88 worth of steaks and shrimp from Walmart, 6001 Mahoning Ave. Ahart, 55, also was wanted on a Boardman warrant.

Identity theft: A North Turner Road resident discovered a fraudulent account had been opened in the victim’s name.

June 9 Drugs: A suspicious car caught the attention of an officer on patrol in the 3600 block of Mahoning Avenue, where Brandon J. Angelo, 25, of Myron Street, Hubbard, was cited on a charge of possessing drug paraphernalia and issued a summons charging drug abuse. Angelo had two bags of a substance that tested positive for THC, the chemical responsible for many of marijuana’s psychological effects, a report showed.

June 10 Arrest: Officers picked up Melody S. Ford, 39, of Austintown as she walked near her Burkey Road residence. Ford was wanted on a Portage County warrant.

Theft: Lisa S. Zellefrow, 36, of Red Apple Drive, Austintown, was charged with intentionally neglecting to scan about $160 worth of merchandise that included two packs each of flea and tick treatment as well as printer ink while in Walmart.

Theft: A man reportedly stole video games from Walmart.

June 11 Arrest: After pulling him over near a Mahoning Avenue gas station, authorities took Steve Jenkins, 66, into custody upon discovering Jenkins, of Westchester Drive, Austintown, was wanted on a Boardman Area Court warrant charging theft.

It will take place on Aug. 17-18 at the Lake Erie beach in Conneaut. Both days will feature landing craft, planes, authentic uniforms, tanks, camps for both sides and memorabilia. Rivetti reminded the group of the sacrifice of that generation and congratulated the Rotary on their Flag Program, which currently decorates Austintown. 3. Develop and manage case file documentation on al clients.

4. Collaborate and consult with faculty, medical professionals and other individuals on- and off-campus to provide continuity of care for student clients and make referrals as necessary.

5. Design and conduct support/therapeutic group sessions as needed.

6. Develop, provide, and oversee crisis intervention protocols (e.g., Crisis Intervention Team, Suicide Response Protocol, Sexual Assault Protocol, etc.).

7. Provide emergency counseling for students as needed throughout the academic year, with on-call responsibilities.

8. Design and implement with the assistance of the Director of Public Safety Assault Advisors’ training program. Serve as the College’s consultant for issues concerning Sexual Assault.

9. Develop and implement workshops and programs for the Residence Life staff and the campus community (e.g., counseling skills, depression and suicide, dysfunctional families, relationships, coping with loss, stress management, new student orientation, etc.).

10. Develop and disseminate mental health wellness information to the campus community via the Counseling Services website, print and social media.

11. Assist in the planning and distribution of promotional materials for the office, and represent the College at various functions for students, families, and alumni.

12. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of the Wellness Center.
