Nominations sought for Italian Fest The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2018 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and the Italian Woman of the year. The nominee would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival opening ceremonies on Aug. 3 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown. Recycled record art The combination of music and art will be explored by using vinyl records as your canvas to make a new piece of art with paint and collage materials at the Boardman library on June 27 at 7 p.m. All materials will be supplied. This event is for tweens and teens.

Game night for adults Play the hand you’re dealt of cards (Rummy), dice (Farkle) and Scrabble on June 28 at 7 p.m. at the Boardman library. Bring a friend or two and join the group. They meet on the fourth Thursday of the month for snacks and bragging rights in this one-hour program for adults.

Students Leadership Challenge 2018 In celebration of his more than 50 years in martial arts, Master Park is offering a “Students Leadership Challenge 2018.” Park has been training and instructing martial arts to all ages for more than five decades in the United States and Korea. He has witnessed and proved that more than 90 percent of students became more successful academically, physically and mentally when participating in martial arts instruction. This year, 3-8 students will be selected from each school building location of 10 local school districts from across the Mahoning Valley.

Schools participating are Boardman, St. Charles, Poland, Holy Family, Canfield, South Range, Austintown, Cardinal Mooney High School, Ursuline High School, St. Christine, Western Reserve, West Branch, Columbiana, Springfield and Lowellville. A scholarship will be available to those who are chosen for 1-3 months of 1-hour classes twice per week. To apply, you must have at least a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

You must submit a form and two recommendations from a teacher or parent. Students are required to follow the rules and regulations. No experience is required. Individual and corporate sponsorships are also available at the following levels: listing sponsor - $100; silver - $300; gold - $500 and platinum - $700. The scavenger hunt split the group of children into teams of two to three students. They then travelled throughout the school trying to find items that fit certain criteria, such as “something red� or “something you can eat.�

They took pictures of these objects using the school’s iPads.

West Boulevard Elementary School had their annual night of fun for the fourth grade students on May 31.

The students participated in a number of events while switching through different stations.

The night is a special event that the school does for the students the night before their graduation ceremony. “It’s a rite of passage at the end of the fourth grade year,� said Al Cervello, the school’s principal.

The students spent their time at the school with other fourth grade teachers in the school. The

parents dropped the students off and picked them back up hours later. The children went between each of the four stations and had pizza near the end of the night.

The students started the event with a small project where they received a small cut out in the shape of a person. The children decorated the figure to look like themselves. From there, they played relay races in the gym.

They then broke off into smaller groups.

They had four different areas where children participated in activities. The dodgeball station took place in the gym after the relay races. The scavenger hunt station began in the technology

Cardinal Mooney High School has announced their summer camp series. All camps will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown, and range in age from kindergarten through eighth-grade. The boysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; basketball camp will run from June 19-21 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. for grades 4-9.

The cost to participate is $60. The CMHS Football Camp of Champions will take place from June 25-26 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. for grades 3-8. The cost to participate is $60.

A cheer camp will be offered Aug. 1-3 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. with a cheer exhibition on Aug. 3 at noon for those in grades 5-8. The cost is $50. A mini cheer camp will take place on Aug. 1-8 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The cost to participate is $40.

The spring meeting of the Mahoning Retired Teachers Association recognized its 80-year or older members for their support and contribution to the association. Board member Peggy Bennett presented carnations to the honorees. Mary Allgood (center) was acknowledged as the oldest (more than 100) member present. Special recognition was also given to more than 100-year-old Frances Ritz (not present) for recently receiving the Youngstown State University Achievement Award. Ritz taught for a total of 48 years at various local schools, including YSU.

The Mahoning Retired Teachers Association recently met for its annual “In-Memorium” program at Drake’s Landing Banquet Center in Canfield. All deceased Mahoning County public school educators for the 2017-2018 membership year were eulogized. A book titled “60 Minutes: Fifty Years of Great Stories” was purchased on behalf of the “John M. Knapick Memorial” in honor of deceased MRTA members. It will become part of the permanent collection of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.

The Boardman Performing Arts Center hosted the annual Spring Concert of the Boardman Bands on May 2.

The symphonic band and wind ensemble performed at the event. Michael Shevock, Timothy Tuite and Thomas Ruggieri directed the bands. They played a number of classical pieces and ended both of their sets with music from a children’s song.

The symphonic band began their set with Frank Ticheli’s “Joy Rev isited.” They a lso played “Mighty Might” by Ted Mesang and arranged by Sean O’Laughlin and “Nettleton” by Johnnie Vinson. The ended their performance with music from “The Little Mermaid,” a piece composed by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken and arranged

by Jay Bocook.

The wind ensemble followed the group with Rossano Gallante’s “The Redwoods” and Calvin Custer’s “La Virgen de la Macarena.” The latter of the two was a song about the Virgin Mary. They also played Morten Lauridsen’s “O Magnum Mysterium,” which Robert Reynolds arranged.

Thomas Ruggieri decided to showcase the talents of senior trombone player Emma Knickerbocker. She performed a solo on “Concerto for Trombone and Band” by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. She has performed with the wind ensemble, marching band and jazz bands for all four years of high school.

full high school career, which culminated in her solo performance on Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Concerto for Trombone and Band.” She played a difficult concerto on trombone with the backing of the wind ensemble.

The group ended the night with music from the Pixar film, “The Incredibles.” Members from the symphonic band joined the ensemble to play as a larger group. The performance comes ahead of the release of Pixar’s “The Incredibles 2” in the summer.

Each attendee paid a small fee to watch the bands perform.

The Boardman Band and Orchestra Parents also had a 50/50 raffle. The money went back to the band to help pay for future expenses, such as their annual band trip.

Boardman bands had other performances from the drumline at Relay For Life on May 18, their jazz bands at the Spring Jazz Concert in the BPAC on June 1 and an end-of-the-year rock show celebration at Boardman Park on June 5.

Moms and daughters spend special day at park

Mothers and daughters celebrated Mother’s Day a week ea rly at Boa rd ma n Pa rk’s “Mommy a nd Me for Tea” event on May 6.

The event featured a lunch, a time for crafts, games, a fashion show and many photo opportunities. The park had the event twice on the same day and both times it sold out.

“It’s that season to celebrate moms,” said recreation director Karen McCa llum.

“It’s a day for moms to dress up with their daughters for a light lunch, crafts, games and a fashion show.”

The event began with pictures in the front of the Lariccia Family Community Center. Inside, they signed in and had lunch, which consisted of sandwiches, crackers, fruit, water, lemonade, tea a nd candy.

Once the families began to finish their lunches, park employees and volunteers from Cardinal Mooney High School passed out small papers with games for the children to play. Other sheets had “get to know me” games. They also handed the mothers a piece of paper to write down information about their child

ents sat in the other room and waited for the show to begin.

The daughters walked down a carpet, posing and spinning, for the fashion show.

They had a park member take pictures of every child.

The park has “Mommy and Me for Tea” every year. This year was the 14th annua l.

The event saw 45 girls at each time.

The Boardman library invited children to their “Smart Money Story Time,“ a program focused on working on children’s financial literacy, on April 25.

The program, ran by librarian Amy Burkard, helped young children recognize money and gave some ways to responsibly save money. The event included a story time, a couple games and a craft.

“I think it’s important because I don’t think it gets discussed a lot,” said Burkard. She wanted to get the children thinking

about money and being responsible with it.

She read two stories to the children throughout the event.

The first book, “Little Croc’s Purse” by Lizzie Finlay, covered an anthropomorphic crocodile that finds a purse full of money and decides to give the purse back.

The other book, “Bunny Money” by Rosemary Wells, is a part of the “Max and Ruby” series.

The book taught the students about responsible spending.

Burkard periodically stopped throughout the story and asked number sense questions to the students, such as “Does she have enough money to buy something for $4 if she only has $5?”

They played two games that worked on recognizing money as well. For one game, Burkard gave the children pictures of coins. She read a small poem that featured the names of the coins. Each time she said a coin, the child with that coin held the picture up. The children matched together two halves of coins and dollar bills for the second game.

After the games, they did a small craft where they colored and made wallets. To do so, they folded different pieces of paper and glued them together.

The program was a part of the PLYMC’s “Smart Money” financial literacy set of programs throughout the branches of the library. The children received a free pigg ybank from the PLYMC at the end of the event.

Boy Scouts spend Earth Day cleaning the Mill Creek MetroParks

The Whispering Pines District of the Great Trail Council of Boy Scouts of America and Mill Creek MetroParks organized the annual Earth Day Clean Up on April 21.

Numerous scouting troops and community organizations visited 29 locations in the metropark to clean up litter and other debris from the areas.

They received help from communities in Austintown, Boardman, Canfield, North Jackson, Poland, Struthers, Warren and Youngstown. Carol Vigorito, Recreation and Education Director of Mill Creek MetroParks, and Mike Kupec of the Whispering Pines District worked together to organize the program.

“It’s in my blood to help the environment,” said Kupec, who has worked with different forestry groups since he was a child.

He created the event with Mill Creek’s then-recreational director 36 years ago. He wanted to give back on Earth Day and help clean up the park he grew up near.

Austintown had three organizations assist in cleaning the park: Cub Scout Pack 184, Boy Scout Troop 184 and Girl Scout Troop 80207. The pack cleaned the Lanterman Gorge, the Boy Scouts took the West Cohasset Trails and the Girl Scouts had the trail behind the Ford Nature Center.

“We want to teach the girls the importance of taking care of the planet,” said Kelly Turner, the head of the Girl Scout Troop 80207. She said this was the group’s first real introduction to the world of scouting.

Boardman had Cub Scout Pack 27 at Lake Newport, Boy Scout Troop 60 at the lower area of Bear’s Den, Venturing Crew 9033 on the Cohasset East Trail, Cub Scout Pack 114 at the MetroParks Farm and Girl Scout Service Units 820 and 821 in different parts of Lake Newport. The also had the Drund company clean up at Volney Rogers Field.

Paula Barany and Kelley Beatty of Girl Scout Service Units 821 both spoke about how they want to instill the Boy Scout of America’s principal of “leave no trace” in their scouts. The scouts said they got to enjoy nature and exercise while helping the environment. The unit incorporates children from 2-10 from Boardman and Poland.

The Canfield groups included Girl Scout Troop 80095 at the Mill Creek Preserve and Cub Scout Pack 25 and Boy Scout Troop 115 at Lake Newport. Boy Scout Troop 25 cleaned up at the West Coast Drive on April 25. Casal’s de’ Spa and Salon also joined the program, helping out at the Lake Glacier Boathouse.

Kevin Miller, the Tiger Den Leader for Cub Scout Pack 25, also spoke to the principals of “leave no trace.”

“Leave an area better than you found it,” he said about what the program teaches the children.

The group not only helped on Earth Day, but they organize hikes together throughout the year. They always take trash bags with them on these hikes to remove litter from nature.

Poland’s two groups, Girl Scout Troop 80591 and Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop 9002, joined in the other groups on the activities. The girl scouts cleaned the area around the Slippery Rock

Pavilion and the 9002 groups took the Hitchcock Woods.

“There’s a lot of trash in places you wouldn’t expect,” said Noah Deering, a boy scout with troop 9002. Anthony DiTommaso, the leader of the groups, said he wanted to help leave things natural and pick up the trash they find. The scouts found a lot of cigarette butts and glass in the

woods. Kupec and the leaders believe that the event is important.

The first year of the program, they only focused on one hillside and they filled four dumpsters of trash.

The program has since expanded to 42 possible locations that the park decided would be best. Kupec said the event allows for groups to help clean the areas

that park crews cannot always reach. The event is open to the public each year. This year, Kupec and Vigorito had two businesses and four families helped with the program. They also get support from the Mahoning County Green Team Recycling Division and Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup program.

3. Develop and manage case file documentation on al clients.

4. Collaborate and consult with faculty, medical professionals and other individuals on- and off-campus to provide continuity of care for student clients and make referrals as necessary.

5. Design and conduct support/therapeutic group sessions as needed.

6. Develop, provide, and oversee crisis intervention protocols (e.g., Crisis Intervention Team, Suicide Response Protocol, Sexual Assault Protocol, etc.).

7. Provide emergency counseling for students as needed throughout the academic year, with on-call responsibilities.

8. Design and implement with the assistance of the Director of Public Safety Assault Advisors’ training program. Serve as the College’s consultant for issues concerning Sexual Assault.

9. Develop and implement workshops and programs for the Residence Life staff and the campus community (e.g., counseling skills, depression and suicide, dysfunctional families, relationships, coping with loss, stress management, new student orientation, etc.).

10. Develop and disseminate mental health wellness information to the campus community via the Counseling Services website, print and social media.

11. Assist in the planning and distribution of promotional materials for the office, and represent the College at various functions for students, families, and alumni.

12. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of the Wellness Center.

Mr. Miller graduated from Slippery Rock University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and works for the Canadian National Railway, Bridge and Building Department.

The couple reside in Poland and will honeymoon while traveling to Europe this summer.
