“I would be remiss if I did not thank our fourth-grade teachers’ for organizing this show. They brought the idea to me last year and we are very grateful to have the opportunity to see what you can do. Great job boys and girls,” said Travis Lavery, CHC principal, as he addressed the students. Before Lavery could finish, the teachers rushed to the front of the gymnasium to join him and started a synchronized

dance to “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” much to the delight of the surprised students. Everyone joined in clapping along to the song as the teachers busted a move. “As you can see, our teachers have talent, too,” Lavery said as the show ended to thunderous applause. The Talent Show was part of the end of the school activities and a celebration of the fourthgraders’ last days at the school.

The students’ featured artwork, “The Altered Book Project 2016-17,” which was completed throughout the year in art class taught by Leonard, was on display in the hallways before and after the show. For “The Altered Book Project 2016-17,“ the fourth-graders used old and discarded literature books, and upscaled old books

into art journals with a common theme of “All About Me.” Pages in the art journals offered visual representatives of the fourth-graders’ lives and included, “Our Family is Woven Through our Lives”, “Friends Give us Strength,” “But Wait Let Me Take a Selfie,” “I Have a Heart - I am Passionate, Hand it to Me - I am a Character,” “I am a Super Hero - My Avatar,” “It’s a Great Day to be a Cardinal,” “Our Futures in Colored Bubbles,” “When I am Older…,” “Patriotism - I am Proud to be an American” and “I am a Small Part of this Big World.“ For the show, the students were dressed in matching Tshirts, which were designed by a member of their class.

Members of the Canfield United Methodist Preschool’s 4-year-old class took a field trip to visit the baby animals at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm on May 12. The students were joined by their parents and siblings for the tour of the farm. The class was divided into two groups, with each taking turns visiting the farm’s play room, visiting the animal barns and taking a wagon ride

to tour the grounds, including stops at the bird barn and horse barn. Brenda Markley and Kim Moff served as tour guides for the students. In the barns, the students were able to get up close and personal with baby chicks, rabbits, goslings, ducklings, baby turkeys and two 1-week-old baby goats, which the children were told are also called kids. The children were even able to pet a rabbit and the kids. They also learned about, and were

shown, an incubator for hatching eggs. While on the tractor tour of the farm, the students learned about how the farm works and what type of equipment is used on the farm. They also learned the difference between dairy cows and longhorn beef cattle. In the bird barn, the children were able to view ducks, chickens, geese, a turkey and peacocks. Dandelion knowledge blows into Sprout Club at Fellows By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Chi ldren at t he mont h ly Sprout Club program met on May 18 at Fellows Riverside Gardens to learn about dandelions. Lynn Zocolo, horticulture educator, teaches the children each month about a different part of the environment. This month the children got handson with dandelions and the different parts. The progra m sta rted out with a coloring sheet for children to color until everyone came and the lesson could be g i n . Z oc olo t aug ht t he children about the different parts of a dandelion and then passed those parts out for the children to look at and feel. The children had the opportunity to examine the stem, the leaves, the flower and the seeds. Zocolo also informed the children that parts of the dandelions are safe to eat, but only after asking an adult.

M a n y p e op le a s s o c i a t e blowing the dandelion seeds with making a wish, so the children made their own wish necklaces. They were given ribbon, a container on the ribber, dandelion seeds and an acorn top as the lid. There was a tag on the necklace t hat said “Some see a weed, I see a wish.” The children were supposed to make a wish as they put the seeds into the container. After making the necklaces, the children tried blowing bubbles with the hollow stem. There was an experiment to see if bubbles or water mixed w ith soap created the best bubbles. In the end, the soap mixture produced the most and biggest bubbles. Sprout Club educations children in a hands-on way that gives them the opportunity to have fun while doing it. On April 29, Cardinal Mooney High School hosted its 14th annual fundraising auction. The event took place in the CMHS gym and was made possible through generous corporate sponsorship from Briarfield Senior Living and Windsor House. The largest fundraising event of the year featured Chinese and silent auctions, a 50/50 raffle, as well as a live auction. New this year, participants could bid on items through an electronic app, Bidpal. This year’s theme was “Celebrate Mooney: Embracing Our Past, Highlighting Our Present, and Building a Bright Future.” As part of the celebration, Mooney honored Diane Mastro Nard, Honorary Chairwoman and former CMHS teacher and speech coach. Also, new this year was a special appeal for the recently established St. Jude’s Fund at Cardinal Mooney set up to assist financially needy students cover emergency costs and tuition in times of crisis. In a five-minute span, the appeal garnered over $25,000. Last year’s auction brought in approximately $80,000. The 2017 Celebrate Mooney Auction garnered more than $136,000 to assist the school with financial aid, tuition assistance and general operating costs. Pictured are CMHS seniors Patrick Pelini and Alex Wollet modeling a Notre Dame football game package at the 14th annual Celebrate Mooney Auction.
