Ava, Willow and Trey made their own soap using food coloring, a liquid mixture and molds to bring home during the Night Owl story time event at the Boardman library on May 10.
Children have squeaky clean fun making soap By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
SAME DAY DELIVERY! SA
The Boardman library hosted a special Mother’s Day Night Owl story time event on May 10. Stor y time events at the Boardman library give children the opportunity to listen to a couple stories and make a craft to take home. This story time the children listened to books about color and made their own soap to give to their mothers for Mother’s Day. “We’re going to melt soap and add coloring to it. They’ll add a couple drops and stir it up and
an adult will pour it into the molds. The next person at the table will add another few drops so each color in the tray will get a little darker and prettier,” said Karen Saunders, a Boardman librarian. Saunders started off the story time with a tale to teach the children about different colors and what happens when they are mixed together. This book gave the children an idea of what would happen when they mix colors together for their soap. Several tables were set up for the children to make their
soaps. Food coloring, molds, sticks and the liquid soap were placed on each of the tables for the children to share while making soap. There were enough supplies for each child to make three or four soap molds. While the soap was setting in the molds, the children went back over to the story time area and listened to Saunders read more stories about color and Mother’s Day. When the soap finished setting and story time was over, the children popped the soaps out of the molds and put them on a plate to take home.

Rich Center receives large donation from MCCTC students By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Rich Center for Autism received a generous donation on May 12 from students who attend Mahoning Country Career and Technical Center. Kayla Windsor, Rachel Perkins and Ty Cook, students from MCCTC, decided to have a book drive for their Honors English class project. The stu-
dents were divided into groups and had to come up with a community service project that involved donating their time, volunteering and receiving items for donations. “We chose to do a book drive because I like kids and everyone was mutual on what we wanted to do,” said Windsor. The students decorated boxes and spread them out around the Poland, Struthers, Boardman,
Lowelville and West Branch areas. The boxes were out from April 11-30, in honor of National Autism Awareness Month. “They have been piling up in my living room, almost to the ceiling,” said Windsor about the boxes full of books. Windsor, Perkins and Cook contacted the Rich Center and asked if they would be willing to partner with the students for the fundraiser. The Rich Center
received over $2,700 worth of toys, 558 books and $50 worth of monetary donations. After bringing in all of the donations, the MCCTC students had the opportunity to visit the students, read to them and play with them and their new toys. “Thank you to everyone who donated books and a huge thank you to Maui Toys. They’re the ones who donated all the toys.” said Windsor.
