Poland unveils new Ohio Historical Marker By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Poland Historical Society had an unveiling and dedication of an Ohio Historical Marker in Poland Township on May 14. The Historical Marker is located outside of the Little Red Schoolhouse, one of two things that remains from the early settlers of Poland Township. The Historical Marker commemorates Poland Township as the first township surveyed in the New Connecticut Western Reserve and the Little Red Schoolhouse as a 19th century oneroom school building. The Poland Historical Society, Poland Township Trustees and the Ohio History Connec-

tion are sponsoring the marker. This marker is the sixth one in Poland and the 43rd in Mahoning County. The Poland Historical Society reached out to the Ohio History Connection and received support to make the dedication of the Historical Marker happen. There was a meeting prior to the unveiling in which speakers from the Poland Historical Society, the Poland Board of Education and many others spoke about Poland Township. Regina Rees, a member of the Poland Historical Society, dressed up as a teacher from the Little Red Schoolhouse to give a presentation on the history of the schoolhouse.

“The beginning of Poland Township started 220 years ago, or to be more exact, the year 1796,” said Tim Heineman, a Poland Historical Society Trustee. Ohio State Representative John Boccieri received a proclamation for this Memorial Day in honor of the dedication of the schoolhouse. “This schoolhouse, this dedication, is a significant part of our history going forward,” said Boccieri. Andry Verhoff, Grant Manager for the Ohio Historical Connection, attended the event to speak about the dedication. Verhoff spoke on the markers program, which began in 1957, and since then more than 1,500 markers

have been placed in Ohio. The markers program helps local communities, organizations and places commemorate their history. “The markers program enables you to understand what was here before,” said Verhoff.

Students become young business people By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley visited the fourthgrade students at Poland Dobbins Elementary on May 10. Volunteers with the Junior Achievement program taught the fourth-graders a lesson about entrepreneurship. The students engaged in five different activities focusing on different aspects of business and what an entrepreneur is. Junior Achievement has two models they follow to provide students information about different programs. There is a traditional way which includes a program once a week for five weeks and the other option is for the schools to dedicate one day to Junior Achievement to come in and explain all five sessions in one day. “We have over 400 volunteers. Volunteers from the business community, a lot of times we have banks and different places like, that brings the extra aspect educators bring,” said Melissa D’Apolito, the Program and Special Events Marketing Coordinator. The program focused on the JA Our Region program students. This program is targeted specifically toward fourthgrade students to teach them about what it takes to be an entrepreneur and the resources they use. The five sessions used are to help students grasp the concept of owning and operating a business using available resources. The lessons are all incorporated in with the Ohio State Standards and reinforce what the students are learning in the classroom. There are different programs that are designed to match the standards of students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. Junior Achievement visits more than 10,000 students a year. “A lot of times our volunteers will pick local entrepreneurs so the kids will understand better,” said D’Apolito. The sessions the students at Dobbins participated in involved exploring well-known businesses and their origins, resources and how entrepreneurs use them for the region their business is in, playing

On May 25 at Michael Alberini’s restaurant in Boardman, the Poland Rotary distributed funds to 15 local charities. The Poland Rotary is a service organization made up of local community and business leaders. The motto of Rotary International, service above self, is the group’s guiding principal and they try to live that out both individually and as a club. This May, the Rotary started a flag fundraiser, in which they will put up flags in residents’ yards in Poland for the major patriotic holidays. More than 150 vendors set up tents and tables outside at Boardman Park for the biannual Baby Bargain Boutique on May 21.

Baby boutique benefits families By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Boardman Park hosted the 12th biannual Baby Bargain Boutique on May 21. The Baby Bargain Boutique is put on twice a year, in the spring and fall, at Boardman Park for families to buy and sell gently used items. There were 150 different moms selling to moms, there weren’t any commercial vendors. “It’s a great way to find good deals and support other moms in the community,” said Karen McCallum, Boardman Park’s Recreation Director. Many people come out, rain or shine, to look for deals. More than 2,000 people attended the four hour event to bargain shop for themselves and for others. There are several vendors who continue to come back year af-

ter year to shop and sell. Aaron and Michelle Dellorco attend the event in both spring and fall and usually set up two spots to sell items. This is their fifth year and are looking forward to keep coming to the event for years to follow. “People get good deals. I feel better about selling my stuff, it benefits us, it benefits people who are shopping. I shop here as well,” said Michelle Dellorco. While some people have been coming for years, this is only the first or second time for many vendors. This is the second Baby Bargain Boutique Jenny Arnaut has set up a stand to sell items. Her first time was in October and she is planning on continuing to come again. The next Baby Bargain Boutique will be at Boardman Park on Sept. 24.
