It nice until we get the water bill. There are quite a few things we can do to lower the consumption. Sometimes the smallest thing can make the biggest difference. Did you know that small household water leaks add up to more 10,000 gallons of water waste per family each year? Water is one of BREWER the world’s most valuable resources – which means we all need to be good stewards and find ways to use it more wisely. You could invest in a high-tech irrigation system or replace your toilets and shower heads with super-low-flow models. But there are plenty of less costly, relatively simple steps that will make a noticeable difference in how much water you use.

Find and fix leaks It’s not uncommon for something in the plumbing to be leaking dozens of gallons of water a week without anyone noticing. A simple fix with a few tools and parts from the hardware store could bring down your water bill for some time to come. Your water meter can tell you a lot about whether you’ve got a leak. Find a time when no one will be using water for at least a couple of hours – maybe before you leave for work or a family outing – and note the water meter reading. When you return, see if it has changed. If it has, you’ve got a leak somewhere. Toilet flappers don’t last forever, and a degraded one can use the same water as leaving a faucet running a constant stream. To check for a leaky flapper, put a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank and wait 10 minutes. If the color shows up in the bowl, you’ve got a leak that is easily fixed with a new flapper. Cut the flow When you’re brushing your teeth or shaving, flip off the tap while you scrub or use the razor. Leaving the water running lets as much as eight to 10 gallons of un-

used water run down the drain (and onto your water bill) each day. Teaching your kids this habit will multiply the savings. Use the dish washer to wash dishes – and make sure it’s fully loaded before you run it. Washing just a few dishes and pans under running water soon uses the same amount of water as an entire load in the dishwasher. Get the most from outdoor watering Grass takes less water to stay green if you set the mower blade higher. A slightly longer turf length promotes root growth that makes the grass more drought-resistant. Leave grass clippings on the lawn — they’ll slowly add nutrients as they decompose to promote healthy, deep root growth without added fertilizers that tend to make grasses thirsty. Plants and grasses adapted to your local conditions will need little or no watering beyond rainfall. Mulch around garden plants and trees to retain moisture. And when you do water your lawn or garden, make sure what comes out of the sprinkler makes it into the ground. Sunshine and wind steal a good bit of water before it even hits the ground. Water early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid peak sunshine. Set water sprays as low to the ground as possible to give wind and sun less chance to evaporate the droplets. And aim the sprays to make sure water lands where it will soak into the earth, not pool on sidewalks, driveways and patios. If you have an irrigation system, check for leaks or have a professional do an inspection. If you’re using hoses and sprinklers, examine where the hose connects to faucet and sprinkler to make sure they’re tight — and replace rubber washers to ensure a good seal. Tips help streamline household cleaning by MetroServices Special to The Vindicator

T

ravel down the cleaning aisle of a neighborhood store and you will be met with product after product designed for specialized cleaning. T here are sprays for w indows, cleansers for electronics, carpet-cleaning foams, and scouring solutions for tubs and showers. Although many of these are effective, the average person can rely on just one cleaning aid for a wide variety of tasks: vinegar. Vinegar is a versatile product that can be used in everything from cooking to pickling to preserving foods to household cleaning. Vinegar is made by two distinct biological processes, offers The Vinegar Institute. Via fermentation, yeast will first change the natural sugars in the vinegar-to-be material solution into alcohol. The second process involves a group of bacteria called “acetobacter,” which convert the alcohol

into an acid. Vinegar can be made from any fruit or natural material containing sugar. For the purpose of generalized cleaning, white vinegar is the most common type used and is typically made from corn.Utilizing vinegar around the house is quite simple, and can be used in various ways around the house. • Remove lime buildup. Vinegar is good for cleaning faucets and showerheads. Make a paste of one teaspoon of vinegar and two tablespoons of salt. Apply to sink fixtures and rub with a cloth. Fill a plastic baggie with vinegar and attach to the showerhead with a rubber band. Let sit a few hours to overnight and then rinse away the mineral deposits. • Brighten laundry. Add 1⁄2 cup white vinegar to the wash cycle. It will help loosen stains and brighten clothing. An added benefit is the acid will reduce static cling. • Disinfect cutting boards. Give cutting boards an extra cleaning by spraying them with straight vinegar, then rinsing to clean. • Clean the disposal. Make sure food residue doesn’t clog garbage dispos-

als and lead to odor. Mix vinegar and baking soda in the drain and allow the bubbling action to remove builtup residue. Use a scrub brush for extra scouring. • Get streak-free windows. Mix a 50-50 solution of vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Use to clean windows and other glass surfaces. Wipe away with a microfiber cleaning cloth so no lint is left behind. • Eradicate pet odor. Pour a little bit of vinegar into an empty litter box. Let stand for around 20 minutes, then rinse with cold water. Vinegar also can be used to blot up pet stains on the carpet. Just test color-fastness in an inconspicuous area first. • Banish water stains. Fix water stains and rings on wood furniture by mixing equal parts vinegar and olive oil. Use a soft cleaning cloth moving in the direction of the wood grain. Polish using a clean cloth. Vinegar can be used all around the house – these were just a few of the dozens of ways to rely on vinegar. Just steer clear of using it on natural stone and marble, as the acid could cause damage.

Long-time REALTOR® Bonita “Bonnie” Beam passed away peacefully June 6, 2017. She was a lifelong resident of the Mahoning Valley and a REALTOR® veteran of 37 years. In 2000, Beam was one of the founding corporate owners of RE/ MAX Valley Real Estate, and together with her original partners chamBEAM pioned RE/MAX from a small six-agent office to the recognizable multi-office influence it is today. Always a driving force in our RE/ MA X off ice, her professionalism, willingness to teach, kindness and wonderful sense of humor were an inspiration to all she touched, both inside and outside of her profession. Beam, without fanfare, opened her heart to this community. She once spent a whole year shopping so she could outfit as many children as she could with new coats for the Rescue Mission Christmas. The next year she literally bought out PayLess so she could deliver new shoes as well. And, you may remember the RE/ MAX Hot Air Balloon and Long Drive fund raiser events for the Children’s Miracle Network; Beam worked tire-

lessly to make each one of those events a success. But, undeniably, her forté was her gift for selling real estate. She loved fulf illing her clients’ dreams as well as making sure their home purchase was a great fit for them. Not only did these clients seek her out again when it was time to move up, but their kids, and kids’ kids sought her expertise as well. As an owner of RE/MAX she never missed an opportunity to try and pass along that expertise to the newer agents and co-workers. And, with Bonnie Beam on the other end of a transaction, the REALTOR® community could always expect nothing short of the highest standard of professionalism and honesty. She also had the best stories and heartiest laugh. She would amaze her co-workers with how she could remember the clients, their phone numbers, and the addresses of transactions completed decades ago. “I don’t need a stinkin’ computer!” she claimed. Who could argue with success? Bonnie Beam enjoyed life to the fullest, and especially the time she spent with her grandchildren. She enjoyed bowling and was a poker player extraordinaire. She loved vacationing in Las Vegas and in Myrtle Beach with her family. She will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.
