Mercy Health Foundation receives 2018 leadership award The Mahoning County Mental Health & Recovery Board recognized Mercy Health Youngstown and Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley with the 2018 Leadership Award during its recent annual recognition luncheon. Currently, Mercy Health Youngstown, Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley and the Mahoning County Mental Health & Recovery Board are working with Neil Kennedy Recovery Centers to provide greater access to detoxification services, added Duane Piccirilli, executive director, Mahoning County Mental Health & Recovery Board. This project, he said, will add 14 beds at Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital that will provide for on-demand access to detoxification services. All of these services – safe rooms, mental health navigation, peer recovery supports and detoxification are critical to our community and are only possible because of Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley, Piccirilli said.

Children’s musician Jim Gill said that he loves performing in a way that gets families to have fun together. After his performance, he gave the example of a dad lifting his child in the air and how happy that made the child.

Jim Gill got his start as a children’s musician and performer in college when he was asked to lead a play group of children. He learned that music helped children engage and focus, so he added some music to his playtimes. Thirty years later, he continues to perform for groups.

Children’s musician Jim Gill performed at the Austintown library for families in the large meeting room on June 15.

Gill, a Chicago musician, travels around the nation playing his music at schools, libraries

and other venues. The Austintown library uses Gill’s music during some of their Baby Brilliant children’s programs, so many of the families were familiar with Gill.

Austintown librarian Nikki Puhalla introduced Gill. Then, Gill sat on a stool and strummed his banjo. He asked that the

children clap in tempo with his strumming. He played it slow to start and then played it faster and faster.

Gill played songs such as these that acted both as music and as games for the families.

He said he wanted to give the families games they could play at home. For example, he had a

song about a silly dance contest where the children danced and then stopped in place on command, resulting in odd, midmotion pauses.

Gill began his career working with play groups of young children with special needs during college. During that time, he found that music helped children engage with the playtime.

On June 11, the Austintown Lions and Lioness clubs had their installation of officers at Rachels Restaurant. This was the 41st anniversary for the Lions Club. King Lion John Susany presided. Theft: A guest at a state Route 46 motel reported money stolen from a suitcase.

Vehicle theft: A 2001 Honda all-terrain vehicle was stolen in the 5300 block of County Line Road.

Theft: Someone in the 1300 block of Northfield Drive removed a pair of shoes from a car.

Mill Creek MetroParks organized events at multiple locations in the park for Kids to Parks Day on May 19.

Kids to Parks Day is a national program that occurs every year on the third Saturday in May. The park had events for families to spend the day together at the MetroParks Farm, Ford Nature Center and the Mill Creek Golf Course.

“It makes it fun to wander around the parks,” said Bill Gilmore, a naturalist educator at the park. Each of the events gave families time together and allowed the parks to showcase what they have to offer at each facility.

MetroParks Farms had a scavenger hunt around the farm houses and a small hike on the Mindy Henning Memorial Trail located in the area.

The children walked around the farmhouses looking for things such as a wheelbarrow and a tractor. They took pictures of the items on their cell phones to prove they found them.

The Ford Nature Center allowed families to tour the facility and see the animals on display there. They also toured a room in the center where

Valley seniors recognized at scholarship breakfast

A recognition breakfast recently took place to honor the recipients of the J.L. Francis Scholarship, First Place Community Fund, at A La Cart Catering on May 11. The breakfast was organized by the Mahoning County Educational Service Center on behalf of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley which manages the First Place Community Fund and disperses the moneys for the scholarship.

Twenty-two high school seniors, one from each public high school in Mahoning County, as well as Choffin Career Center, Ursuline and Cardinal Mooney, each received a $1,000 college scholarship. These individuals were honored for their dedication to service, while maintaining a high level of achievement in their high school studies. Each student was chosen from the top 10 sudents in their graduating classes.

MCESC Super i ntendent Ronald Iarussi welcomed the scholarship recipients and their guests to the program.

“Good morning everyone.

Welcome to the J.L. Francis Scholarship Breakfast. This is a great event and we always look forward to it because we know summer is coming and it is a time of new beginnings for the students. To our award winners, I would encourage you to spread your wings and fly, but I also encourage you to come back to the Valley to help grow this area.

We need folks like you here to grow our future. I would like to take a moment to thank the parents here today. You should take great pride in your children. And thank you to the school administrators who are here today for helping to produce such talent.

Thank you for being here and I hope you enjoy this event,” Iarussi said.

After breakfast was served, Casey Krell, director of supporting organizations and donor services of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley spoke to the large audience.

“We are pleased to be able to support theses students in their pursuit of higher education. You are so deserving and so commendable. We wish you the best in your future endeavors. Thank you,” Krell said.

Moward was chosen from among the top 10 students in the PHS graduating class. She will attend the University of Cincinnati in the fall to study chemical engineering.

In administering this scholarship, the Mahoning County Educational Service Center is able to support the youth of Mahoning County in their pursuit of continuing education. The recipients have successfully met the grade point average requirements and

have also demonstrated a commitment to their schools and communities through volunteer service and involvement during their high school years.

The J.L. Francis Scholarship was established during the 2005-06 academic school year for schools in Mahoning County by the First Place Bank and the First Place Bank Community Foundation. Before his death in 2005 from ALS, Jeffery L. Francis served as Chief Operating Officer of First Place Bank and the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the First Place Financial Corporation. His hard work and dedication inspired the creation of this scholarship. In 2014, the First Place Community Foundation fund was transferred to the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley which maintains a 50 year tradition of supporting continued education.

Speaker discusses technical education Neighbors | Submitted

Carrie Sturgeon, admissions coordinator for the New Castle School of Trades, recently explained the advantages and challenges of a technical education for graduates and post graduates to the Rotary Club of Austintown. The school has a strong background and reputation, and has recently expanded into East Liverpool. Most classes are complete in a 15 month period, and employment is rapid for most students. Welding is still in strong demand in this area, but nationwide, heating and air conditioning reign as most demandable. Soft skills are also part of the curriculum so that graduates are ready to work with minimal additional training by the employer. Community Connectors program honored Neighbors | Submitted

The Community Connectors program won the Rotary Club of Austintown a high honor at the District 6650 Rotary Convention at the Avalon Inn in April. The Robert Manchester Vocational Award recognizes one of the 47 clubs in the district for their efforts in promoting vocational education in their community and the state. Community Connectors is a partnership between the Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber and the Austintown Local School District, aimed at making students workforce ready.

The goal of the program is to create a well-rounded student so they have the soft skills necessary for employment.

Students are paired with a mentor for additional support and relationship building. A grant of $100,000 was awarded to Austintown by the State of Ohio to institute the program, administered by Amy Trafficante and Lynn Mickey within the school, and 110 volunteers were gathered, with which 48 students were placed and mentored for the 201718 school year. The program involved collaboration of Nick Santucci of the Chamber, Vince Colaluca and Jeremy Batchelor of Austintown Schools, Rick Stauffer from Austintown Township, and Bruce Laraway and Christine Vlosich from Austintown Rotary, as well as others from industry and the community. VBS has “On the Farm” theme Redeemer Lutheran Church will host its annual Vacation Bible School for children who are ages 3-12 on July 18-20 from 9 a.m. until noon. School celebrates grandparents

St. Christine School invited grandparents to their school to spend the day with their grandchildren on May 4.

Jennifer DeLiso led the organization of the annual Grandparents’ Day. The grandparents spent time in the classrooms with the students and teachers and time around the building with their grandchildren. The event spanned from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

“We want to thank the grandparents for their devotion,” said principal Walter Carpenter. “They’re the foundation of

the family ... and the rock of our church and school.”

The day began with a mass in the morning. From there, they had a small snack of doughnuts and coffee. They then went to the classrooms.

Each of the teachers had different activities planned for the grandparents. Each year, the teachers have a different theme for the event. This year, they used a Cinco de Mayo theme and had games and activities for the grandparents.

The school provided a lunch for the families in the school’s cafeteria. The grandchildren got to eat with their grandparents.

The grandparents also had

a number of activities to visit throughout the school. The school had a basket raffle and art show in the gymnasium and photo areas in Room A and in White Hall. The grandparents could buy framed student artwork.

The school also organized an area of the school to commemorate grandparents who have died, but are still in the hearts of students and the school.

The grandparents left after noon. More than 560 grandparents visited the event. The school has had this event toward the end of the school year for the past twelve years. Prior to that, they had the event on Grandparents Day in September.

The Fitch choirs performed their spring concert in the high school auditorium on May 5 to a receptive audience.

The show had a “Rock the Jukebox” theme that became more present in the second of the two act show. The night featured a men’s choir, two women’s choirs and the Fitch concert choir. Fitch principal Chris Berni introduced the choirs and spoke about the program and the program’s director William Klein.

The concert choir fittingly opened the show with “Rock the Jukebox.” Then, Berni welcomed members from the American Legion Austintown Memorial Post No. 301 to the microphone in front of the stage. They spoke about their gratitude for the “veteran friendly” high school.

They gave Klein and his group a donation of $1000. The choir followed this with a performance of “I’m Proud to be an American.”

The men’s chorus sang after the concert choir. They performed “Do Wah Diddy” by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, “Brother, My Brother” from Frank Wildhorn’s musical “The Civil War,” “My Girl” from The Temptations and American folk song “Sixteen Tons” by Merle Travis.

They sang Joseph Haydn’s “Gloria in Excelsis,” The Andrew

Sisters’ “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” the song “If We Hold on Together” from the animated movie “The Land Before Time” and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.” The women’s choir II had their own performance of Kim André Arnesen’s “Even When He is Silent.”

The concert choir concluded the first act. They began with “Jubilate Deo,” a traditional choir song and then moved into their music they learned for their performance at Carnegie Hall in New York, starting with Moses Hogan’s “Elijah Rock.”

They then sang Hogan’s “I Want Jesus to Walk with Me,” which featured a soulful solo by Romond DuVal. DuVal’s solo led to a standing ovation from the crowd, the first of many. Klein prefaced the next song, “The Rumor of the Secret King” by John Mackey, with being “the hardest piece of music” he has read. That performance also led to a standing ovation. They ended their set with “The Battle of Jericho” by Hogan.

After each of the choir’s performances, Klein and Berni honored the seniors in the band.

Each senior received flowers and stood with their family. The Parents’ Club also gave away three $1,000 scholarships to seniors in the concert choir during their performance.

Klein had the alumni join the Fitch singers for a large singing of a traditional amen. They performed the piece in dedication to a student’s mother who died during the school year.

The first act saw each of the groups stand still on risers while they sang. The second act had no risers and the students danced while they sang.

in the second act.

The men’s chorus sang “Roots of Rock and Roll,” which focused on the early rock ‘n’ roll songs, while the women’s choir I performed a medley called “Big

Girls Don’t Cry.” The women’s choir II’s medley took female rock songs from the 80s, and the concert choir performed a longer version of “Rock the Jukebox.”

Appuglieses celebrate 66th anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Gabe Appugliese of Youngstown recently celebrated their 66th anniversary with family.
