The teams who set up on site made their tents all Disney movie related to follow along with this year’s Disney theme for Relay for Life. “It’s a lot of fun. We fundraise all year. We did a quarter auc-
tion this year and a couple restaurant nights that were really successful,” said Hughes. Several local business, such as Pizza Hut and Buffalo Wild Wings, helped sponsor the event. There was a Pizza Hut pizza eating contest along with a BW3 wing eating contest. There was also a lip sync battle, carnival games, a DJ and entertainment from various guests. Relay for Life is a way to spread awareness and bring together survivors, families of survivors, families of those
who didn’t make it and many others who want to show support. This year there were 320 people registered prior to the event, plus more who registered at the event. “I started doing it because my grandmother died of lung cancer so it’s bittersweet for me. I do it because I don’t want someone else to feel what I felt,” said Hughes. The committee will begin planning on June 4 for the 2018 Relay for Life and thinking of ways to make the event bigger and better.
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Austintown library every Tuesday in June at 10 a.m.

The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley recently announced a new program this year that helps families on the autism spectrum and other special needs to get out into the community to enjoy activities with their peers and their families. Camp FRIEND Family Week will take place from June 26-30, 2017 with an activity planned each day. The highlight of the week will be a Kennywood Day on June 28, including a chartered bus to the park. SponsorA-Child donations and volunteer opportunities are still available. For more information, call Camp Coordinator Tracy Marciano at 330-717-1342 or go to www.autismmv.org. “This year’s program is a spinoff of our successful Camp FRIEND day camp that was started in 2014,” said Marciano,
who serves as the Autism Society of Mahoning Valley Board Secretary. “We decided to open the week up to families to affect more children on the spectrum. At traditional day camp, we think it is important to keep our pupil-to-qualified counselor ratio very low because of the intense needs of children and teens on the autism spectrum. As a result, every year families were turned away. We hope this year everyone who is interested can be involved.” The Camp FRIEND Family Week schedule is: June 26th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. - bowling party at Camelot Lanes in Boardman ($6/person); June 27 from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. - skating and more at the Skate Zone in Austintown ($8/person, free if assisting); June 28 from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. - Kennywood

We have hired four special education teachers to assist families for our Kennywood day. Many of our families wouldn’t even consider going to an amusement park so we want to help them.” According to the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1 in 3 persons with autism are socially isolated. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. looks to tackle the challenges that cause this staggering statistic by providing the supportive environments to facilitate friendships between persons with autism to create support for parents and caregivers.

Victoria and mom, Danielle Jones, are shown with Youngstown State University’s “Pete the Penguin” in the picnic pavilion at Austintown Community Church for the 2017 “Celebrate Families Picnic” at the A.C.C. Preschool Childcare Center.
School year ends with fun at A.C.C. Preschool The Austintown Community Church Preschool Childcare Center closed out the school year with several fun activities for the children and their families. Two weeks before the end of the school year, A.C.C. Preschool Childcare Center hosted their annual Bike-a-Thon (Bike Week), It is an outdoor activity to help teach the children about bike safety and transportation. Also during this week, they raised funds for a special family or organization. This year, their donations went to Austintown resident Mike Clemmons. Clemmons has been battling a progressive disease known as Multiple Sclerosis (MS) for 25 years. He is a husband and father of two daughters. MS is an autoimmune disease that the immune system attacks the myelin sheath (outer coating) of the nerves. Currently there is no cure. Clemmons’s hobbies include going hunting with his brother and wife, and for the
past 8 years volunteering his time to the Austintown Girls Softball League as a scorekeeper for his younger daughter’s team, and as a board member in charge of scheduling, keeping the website up to date and more. He has gone through every treatment and medication there is out there to help slow down the process of MS; including chemotherapy two different times. “It was truly a surprise that I walked right into the morning. Amy (Mrs. Amy Teeters, Preschool Teacher) convinced my daughter to sneak me up there to see in person,” he said. “I think it’s wonderful what the kids and church have done this year to help support a local person, in this case being me and my very expensive disease. I truly appreciate this in so many ways. Volunteering to help others is always an awesome thing to do in life and I myself do this in order to keep myself moving no matter what this disease keeps throwing my way.”
To prepare for the event, the preschool prepared a large bike course with a chalk liner and create a mini ‘town’ in the rear of the A.C.C. parking lot. Each class created a ‘building’ or ‘business’ in their classroom from large appliance/furniture boxes or other props. These ‘buildings’ were placed along the bike course. The children followed the bike course on their bikes, following the ‘streets,’ stopping at stop signs, stopping to ‘get gas’ for their vehicles and visiting the ‘buildings’ of the ‘town.’ They also get a ‘driver’s license.’ During the last week of school, they had a “Celebrate Families Picnic.” Everyone got together as the children shared finger plays, songs and participated in activities from the past year. The Austintown Community church provided the food and beverages, along with Austintown Bounce, Inc. providing an inflatable bouncer. A special apSee PRESCHOOL, Page 8

pearance was made by YSU’s “Pete the Penguin.” This year’s summer program began June 5 with the theme S.T.E.A.M. – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math / Strong, Team, Effort, Action Machine. “These are fun filled days of
experiments, critical thinking and engineering our way ‘out of the box’ through a great team effort,” said Preschool Director Mrs. Cindy Ellashek. The summer program is designed as a hands-on indoor/ outdoor fun experience for ages 3 through fifth grade. The A.C.C. Preschool Childcare Center is located at 242 S. Canfield-Niles Road (SR 46) in Austintown. It is open from 6:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday

Sunshine Benefit Golf Outing to be on July 15 The twelfth annual Sunshine Benefit Golf Outing, sponsored by Magilla’s Sports Bar and Grill, located at 225 Four Mile Run Road in Austintown, will take place on July 15 at Lakeside Golf Course. The outing is a three-person scramble that includes a continental breakfast and lunch at the turn. Following the event is a made-to-order steak dinner reception at Magilla’s Sports Bar, where prizes will be awarded for the hole events. The winner of the 50/50 drawing and the winners of the Chinese auction will be announced.
The Sunshine Benefit Golf Outing is committed to helping a person in need due to a medical condition. This is made possible because of volunteers and the generous contributions of local businesses. This year’s recipient, Mandy Fitch, is a 34-year-old life-long Austintown resident. She has been battling chronic kidney disease since 2004. Fitch is currently preparing for dialysis and is in the process of being placed on a kidney transplant waiting list. She has been an employee at the Austintown Giant Eagle for the past 13 years.
The committee co-chairs are asking for your help in making this event a success by becoming a hole and/or program sponsor, giving a gift donation for the Chinese auction, making a monetary donation or purchasing a ceiling tile advertisement at Magilla’s Sports Bar and Grill. For more information, contact one of t he fol low i ng committee co-chairs: Mark Kellerman at 330-397-7652, John Mashiska at 330-519-6753, Allan or Cyndi Gordon at 330716-0756 and Jim Kroskoski at 330-507-3734.

Cardinal Mooney High School recently announced that they are the recipient of a $10,000 grant from the Home Savings Charitable Foundation. CMHS will utilize the grant for facilities and technological improvements to the school’s infrastructure specifically, as part of the Cardinal Mooney Auditorium Enhancement and Programming Campaign.
