Community celebrates Akron Children’s Beeghly opening By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Akron Children’s Hospital hosted a special event for the community to celebrate the opening of their Beeghly campus on June 19. Naturefest was hosted to bring the community and employees to the new Beeghly campus to

explore the facility, enjoy entertainment and more. “We want the public to be aware and familiar with what this will be,” said Lisa Taafe, Clinical Administrative Director and Project Manager of Naturefest. Naturefest began at 11 a.m. and ran through 2 p.m. Guests

could see animals that Jungle Terry brought and had the opportunity to pet some of them. There was also Sue Durante, known as the Bubble Lady, who put on a show with bubbles where some children had the chance to be put inside a bubble. “We’re using the term Naturefest, we wanted to bring nature into it because Mill Creek Park is such a big thing in the area,” said Taafe. The 20 million dollar expansion will be beneficial and convenient to the community. From planning to opening, the whole project took about two and a half years. There were families,

Sue Durante, the Bubble Lady, put one of the children inside a bubble during the festivities at Naturefest on June 17 at the Akron Children’s Hospital Beegly campus.

NATUREFEST Continued from Page 3 Mahoning Valley, took the stage and gave a speech before the ribbon cutting ceremony. “As an independent, freestanding children’s hospital, we are solely focused on children and families. We view every project through the eyes of a child,” Hrina told the audience.

Hrina then introduced the Schadl family, who have been at Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley for various sports injuries throughout the years. Natalie Schadl spoke to the audience about her experience with Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley and how supportive and accommodating the employees were. After the Schadl family spoke, it was time to cut the ribbon. Hrina, the Schadls, Taafe and

George Mackall each had a pair of scissors and cut the ribbon to celebrate the opening on the Beeghly campus. The festivities continued after the ribbon cutting with a performance by Easy Street Productions. “You are going to have a family centered care when you get here, not just patient centered,” said Taafe. The Beeghly campus will officially open on July 11 and will begin to accept patients.

Girls waited in the other room at Boardman Park as they prepared to walk the runway during the Mommy and Me for Tea Fashion Show.

Mothers and daughters celebrate with food and fashion By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Moms and daughters wore their best outfits to the 13th annual Mommy and Me for Tea Fashion Show at Boardman Park on May 7. There were two times for the mothers and daughters to attend and more than 170 people came to the event. The program started with tea, sandwiches, pastries and other refreshments for everyone to eat and drink. When the meal was finished, guests went to the other room to make crafts and participate in the runway show. “It’s just a fun afternoon for the moms and daughters to have lunch, do some crafts and have a picture taken,” said

Boardman Park Recreation Director Karen McCallum. The event was filled with several mothers and daughters come as a yearly tradition, while others came for the first time. Many of the mothers say they enjoy coming back because it gives them an opportunity to spend time with their daughters making items to take home and forming new memories. Students from the Emerging Leaders Club at Boardman High School volunteered to help with the different stations. The students said they liked seeing the mothers and daughters come in wearing their best outfits, make cute and easy crafts and spend quality time together. The event finished off with

a runway fashion show. Mothers took a seat as their daughters strutted their stuff down the runway. As the daughters walked down, McCallum would describe what they’re wearing, what they like and a little bit about them. “It’s made to be a fun, seasonal, holiday day to spend with mom,” said Karen McCallum.

The Autism Society of Mahoning Va lley recently announced a new program this year that helps families on the autism spectrum and other special needs to get out into the community to enjoy activities with their peers and their families. Camp FRIEND Family Week will take place from June 26-30, 2017 with an activity planned each day. The highlight of the week will be a Kennywood Day on June 28, including a chartered bus to the park. SponsorA-Child donations and volunteer opportunities are still available. For more information, call Camp Coordinator Tracy Marciano at 330-717-1342 or go to www.autismmv.org. “This year’s program is a spinoff of our successful Camp

FRIEND day camp that was started in 2014,” said Marciano, who serves as the Autism Society of Mahoning Valley Board Secretary. “We decided to open the week up to families to affect more children on the spectrum. At traditional day camp, we think it is important to keep our pupil-to-qualified counselor ratio very low because of the intense needs of children and teens on the autism spectrum. As a result, every year families were turned away. We hope this year everyone who is interested can be involved.” The Camp FRIEND Family Week schedule is: June 26th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. - bowling party at Camelot Lanes in Boardman ($6/person); June 27 from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. - skating and more at the

We have hired four special education teachers to assist families for our Kennywood day. Many of our families wouldn’t even consider going to an amusement park so we want to help them.” According to the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1 in 3 persons with autism are socially isolated. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. looks to tackle the challenges that cause this staggering statistic by providing the supportive environments to facilitate friendships between persons with autism to create support for parents and caregivers.

After the essays were presented, the teachers took the stage to announce their students. As the students walked across the stage, they received a diploma and a handshake from their teacher and the PTA President.

When all the students finished walking across the stage, they waited outside as the audience watched a presentation. The presentation was a slideshow of different pictures of the fourthgrade students participating in different activities throughout the school year. While the students were outside they talked about how they were excited for summer and

the fifth grade. Before departing, the families and students enjoyed cookies and punch and had the opportunity to talk to the teachers and Principal Don Robinson. The evening came to an end and the students prepared themselves for the summer before entering their first year at Boardman Center Intermediate School.
