Canfield’s 4th of July tradition continues this year The Canfield 4th of July Committee recently announced that this year’s celebration continues the 52nd annual tradition. July 4 begins early with the Firecracker4 Mile Run. You can register ahead of time by visiting www.canfield4thofjuly. com. There is a race form on the home page. Registration will also be taken at the Township Hall on the Green, beginning at 7:30 a.m. The children’s race around the Green starts at 8:15 a.m. in front of Farmers National Bank. The Firecracker 4 Mile takes off at 8:30 a.m. and the starting line is in front of the Canfield United Methodist Church. This race is run on a familiar course, through the streets of Canfield. Parade participants line up early at the Fairgrounds with committee members Dave Burch, Ga r y Hubba rd a nd Steve Bennett, as well as countless volunteers help the floats, bands, antique cars and local and state dignitaries find their parade placement. At precisely 10:10 a.m., Parade Starters Jim Queen and Mark Sabol will launch the Canfield 4th of July Parade. Led by Police Chief Chuck Colucci and Fire Chief
Don Hutchison, the parade will travel north on Broad Street and wind around the Green, passing by the reviewing stand. Following the parade, stop by the gazebo for the patriotic country sounds of Andy Timko, local musician and former Canfield resident. There are also games and bounce-arounds for the children on the North Green, including a petting zoo, all organized by committee member Courtney Larson. There is also a climbing wall and a dunk tank where you can dunk your favorite Canfield Police officer. If a pet show is more your style, wander over to the South Green where Doctor’s Park Veterinary will be judging the pet competition. Of course, you’ll want to stop by the food court for a delicious variety of sandwiches, fries and cold drinks, with all proceeds benefitting local non-profit organizations. “It’s a tradition we are so proud to carry on,” said Committee Co-Chair Enid Maldonado. “The year of preparation is definitely worth it to see so many people enjoy this celebration of our country’s independence.”

Till Open Golf Scramble board members Stephen DeCapua, Sharr Williams McNally, John Tillery and Richard Duffett were joined by lead sponsor Chuck Eddy (left) and Canfield Local Schools Superintendent Alex Geordan (right) at a kick-off press conference to discuss the history of the event as well as the substantial donation that has been made to the schools on June 16.
That is what Canfield is and golf seemed to be the glue which put this all together and I am proud to say this memorial trophy is named after my mom. I am honored to be a part of the Till Open. Canfield has served us well,” Eddy said. John Tillery spoke on how important Canfield is to him.
“Growing up here in Canfield meant a lot. What our parents and our friends’ parents did for us made life much better for us. The Till Open is about having fun, getting involved and giving back,” Tillery said. For more information or registration information, visit canfieldschools.net.

a fundraiser. The first year we raised $8,000. Canfield is such a special place to support us. We eventually established a memorial to honor those we have lost. Over five years, we have given back $113,000 to the schools to help more than 20 extra curricular activities,” Duffett said. Duffett then turned the floor over to Chuck Eddy of Chuck Eddy Automotive, who praised Canfield and spoke of the Till Open Shirley Eddy Memorial Trophy. “I am proud to be a supporter of the Till Open. As the event moved forward and grew, it was a great opportunity to give back to the school system which has taken such good care of us. My family is very proud to live in Canfield. Canfield is a great town, which used to be a cornfield. It grew on its own. It is unpretentious, inviting, innocent, warm, safe, secure community. And that was my mom, Shirley Eddy. She was an innocent, quiet, inviting person. She was always behind the scenes.

The sixth annual Fourth of July Till Open Golf Scramble will take place at Mill Creek Metroparks North Course on July 1. Registration and breakfast will run from 7:30-8:30 a.m., with a memorial salute honoring honor Grant Galvin, Thomas James, Victor Mohl, Mark Seiser and Helen Tillery from 8:30-9 a.m. and a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Till Open board members Richard Duffett, Stephen DeCapua, John Tillery and Sharr Williams McNally, along with lead sponsor Chick Eddy and Canfield Local Schools Superintendent Alex Geordan had a kick-off press conference to discuss the history of the event as well as the substantial donation that has been made to the schools. Superintendent Geordan provided opening remarks. “Without the support of outside organizations, our athletic complexes can’t grow. Without booster groups and alumni support, like the Till Open, we cannot do what we do today. Canfield is growing in both the classrooms and in athletics with these private dollars which have been given back to the district. Without that support, our students would not have access to what they have. We have over 20 varsity sports, and with the help of these groups and alumni, our pay to play program was been discontinued a few year ago, providing more opportunities for our student-athletes to participate,” Geordan said. Richard Duffett provided a history to the annual Till Open Golf Scramble. “This started about 30 years ago when my classmate John Tillery moved to Virginia. He would always come back to visit over the Fourth of July and we would go golfing. We nicknamed it the Till Open. Fast forward to our 35th reunion and Till had the idea to turn it into

Canfield 4th of July Committee announces 2017 grand marshal Each year, the Canfield 4th of July Committee chooses a local resident to serve as the Grand Marshal of the July 4th Parade. Mayors, educators, elected officials and people who strive to make a difference in the community have been honored throughout the parade’s 52 year history and this year’s honoree continues that tradition. The Canfield 4th of July Committee recently announced that this year’s 2017 Parade Grand Marshal is Judge Scott Hunter. Hunter graduated from Canfield High School in 1981, from Youngstown State in 1985 and received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Cincinnati in 1988. Hunter has practiced law in the community for more than 30 years and has served as a Mahoning County Judge since 1999. In addition, Hunter and his partner, Attorney Robert Stevens, established the Hunter-Stevens Land Title Company in 1998. Hunter admits he has always had a strong commitment to public service, and he credits that dedication to his upbringing in Canfield. “Any successes I have achieved in my life are directly attributed to my parents first,” he said. “But most certainly also to the Canfield schools and community. They provided professional growth and opportunities throughout my life.” Hunter has served as a Canfield City Councilman, a Trustee for the Cardinal Joint Fire District and in 1998, succeeded Francis “Spike” McLaughlin as Mayor of Canfield. “That was an especially great honor for me. My Dad and Spike were great friends,” he said. Having walked in all but one of Canfield’s parades – and many other local communities’ parades since 1991, Hunter says he’s thrilled to be riding in the Grand Marshal’s car this year, even though it means he will miss shaking everyone’s hands along the parade route. “Canfield was a special place to grow up,” he added, ”it will always be home.” Hunter is a life-long Mahoning County resident, married to the former Michelle Marino, father to three girls: Ashley, Emily and Katie, and stepfather to Jessica and Austin.
Autism Society announces Camp FRIEND Family Week The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley recently announced a new program this year that helps families on the autism spectrum and other special needs to get out into the community to enjoy activities with their peers and their families. Ca mp F R I E N D Fa mily Week will take place from June 26-30, 2017 with an activity planned each day. The highlight of the week will be a Kennywood Day on June 28, including a chartered bus to the park. Sponsor-A-Child donations and volunteer opportunities are still available. For more information, call Camp Coordinator Tracy Marciano at 330-717-1342 or go to www. autismmv.org. “This year’s program is a spinoff of our successful Camp FRIEND day camp that was started in 2014,” said Marciano, who serves as the Autism Society of Mahoning Valley Board Secretary. “We decided to open the week up to families to affect more children on the spectrum. At traditional day camp, we think it is important to keep our pupil-to-qualified counselor ratio very low because of the intense needs of children and teens on the autism spectrum. As a result, every year families were turned away. We hope this year everyone who is interested can be involved.” The Camp FRIEND Family Week schedule is: June 26th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. - bowling party at Camelot Lanes in Boardman ($6/person); June 27 from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30

Mahoning Valley Board President and a mom to two autistic children. “It is difficult for our families to go out into the public without support from other families. We have hired four special education teachers to assist families for our Kennywood day. Many of our families wouldn’t even consider going to an amusement park so we want to help them.” According to the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1 in 3 persons with autism are socially isolated. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. looks to tackle the challenges that cause this staggering statistic by providing the supportive environments to facilitate friendships between persons with autism to create support for parents and caregivers.

Thousands of people gathered together for the 13th biannual spring Baby Bargain Boutique at Boardman Park on May 20. More than 150 vendors set up tents and tables to sell gen-
tly used items, such as clothes and toys, to the shoppers who attended the event. There were no commercial vendors, only families who sold items to other families. Families selling to other families helps bring a sense of togetherness and bonding within the community.
Several vendors come to both events, and have been coming for many years. There are also new vendors who have shopped at the boutique, but never sold anything. The new vendors enjoy helping out families like they have been helped out. “I came with my friends to help prepare for a our friend’s
baby shower,” said Katie Pugh. Those who come to shop come for various reasons. They buy things for baby showers, their children, their family or friends’ children and as gifts for a birthday or holiday. The vendors and shoppers are the ones who continue to make the Baby Bargain Boutique a
success because of their commitment to the event. Those who continuously come to one or both events year after year help bring the community together while having fun shopping. The fall Baby Bargain Boutique will take place again at Boardman Park in September.

It’s lasted over 40 years so they must be doing something right,” said Tripp. The members of the MVOCC put a lot of hard work in effort into their classic cars and several members have more than one car. There are various makes and models the members have and display at car cruises. Many of the car club members are active in other car clubs around the nation. Mike Klem is the regional representative of Ohio and Western Pennsylvania and the Vice President of the Vintage Volkswagen Club of America. Klem helps run the social media for the group and the Facebook page has more than 31,000 people joined. “We’re just Volkswagen people. We have different shows across the country, there are different chapters,” said Klem. The MVOCC hosts several car cruises throughout the year at various places around the Northeast Ohio area. They work with senior homes, restaurants and other businesses and organizations around the area. A Fourth of July car cruise will take place at the Austintown Senior Center and there will be food, prizes and more for those who attend. “I think that’s what keeps the club going is these little dinners we have,” said Rich Posivak, member of the MVOCC. “There’s always a huddle somewhere where guys are talking about cars.” “The purpose of our club is to promote, educate and encourage the preservation, restoration and enjoyment of antique self-propelled vehicles and related material. We also conduct meetings, tours and programs of all sorts relating to the preservation and history of automotive vehicles,” is the mission of the MVOCC. There are more than 200 members in the Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club and the members always step up when needed. The club gives the members an opportunity to make friends and create bonds over the shared love of classic cars.
