Canfield Fourth of July Committee announces 2016 festivities schedule The Canfield Fourth of July Committee is excited to announce the schedule for this year’s festivities to take place on July 4 in the Center of Canfield.

The Independence Day celebration begins early – registration for both the Half Mile Kids’ Race and the Firecracker 4 Miler kicks off at 7:30 a.m. in the Township Hall on the Green. The Kids’ Race around the Green takes off at 8:15 a.m. in front of Farmers National Bank. At 8:30 a.m. in front of the Dairy Queen, is the start of the Firecracker 4 Miler.

As families gather on the Green to view the parade, they can visit the booths and catch JD Eicher performing on the Gazebo from 9-10 a.m.

Parade participants begin assembling at the Fairgrounds, at 9:30 a.m. the Kids Bicycle Parade Judging begins, the floats are judged and at 10:10 a.m., Jim Queen and Mark Sabol officially launch the parade leaders. Show your support for all of our parade participants including our local veterans, elected officials, a contingent of antique automobiles and the Canfield Pride Marching Band.

Following the parade, join us at the Gazebo as we honor our Grand Marshal before JD Eicher returns for a post parade performance. Then head to the North Green for an array of free kids games, bounce-arounds and a

Cookie is a 3-year-old orange male cat that was left in a foreclosed house. He gets along with the other cats in the shelter and is no problem at all. Cookie is a nice cat that would surely make someone very happy. The shelter is not sure how he would react around dogs and children, but he seems pretty mellow so he may do great with children.

Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road in Canfield is having a drive through chicken dinner on July 7 until it is sold out. The menu will include stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and a brownie.

Kennsington Golf Club hosts food drive CTW Development Corp. and Kennsington Golf Club and Grille have teamed up with Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley to host a food drive at the golf course from June 6 to June 27. Canfield Village Middle School fifth-grade students celebrated Idiom Day on May 20.

Idiom Day served as a culminating activity as the students finished up studying figurative language in their Language Arts classes.

Each student was assigned an idiom by their teacher, such as “knee jerk reaction” and “let sleeping dogs lie, and it was the student’s responsibility to determine the meaning of the idiom by researching the phrase. Students were required to use the idiom in a sentence to show they clearly knew the meaning.

CVMS band students perform concert

The Canfield Village Middle School fifth- and sixth-grade bands presented their annual spring concert at the Canfield High School on May 16. The bands were under the direction of CVMS Band Director James Volenik and Youngstown State University Student Teacher Matthew Ohlin.

Volenik welcomed the large audience of family and friends to the concert.

“Good evening families and friends and welcome to our annual fifth- and sixth-grade spring concert. We are going to start with the fifth-graders tonight. It’s hard to believe that only seven months ago, these students could barely even play a note, and now they are playing seven pretty complicated songs for fifth grade. They have truly improved through the year. And to the parents, thank you for your encouragement of them, and thank you for the private lessons you provided, which helped keep them motivated,” Volenik said.

With Ohlin conducting, the fifth-grade band opened the concert with “Theme and Variations on Hot Cross Buns” arranged by Peter Blair, and continued with “Aunt Rhodie Pays a Visit” arranged by Peter Blair.

With Volenik back in front of the band, they performed “Theme and Variations on Lightly Row” arranged by Peter Blair, followed by “The Caisson Song” arranged by Peter Blair.

Seven Canfield Village Middle School fifth-grade French horn players were featured at the CVMS fifth- and sixth-grade annual spring concert at the Canfield High School on May 16. The musicians played “Polly Wolly Doodle.”

Volenik then introduced the seven French horn players, who performed “Polly Wolly Doodle.”

“Many high school bands don’t have seven French horn players, let alone middle school bands.

We are lucky to have these seven students interested in the French horn,” Volenik said.

The fifth-grade band continued their performance with “Power Rock” arranged by Peter Blair and “Ode to Joy” from “Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony” arranged by Peter Blair.

The students then closed their portion of the concert with “Shortin’ Bread” arranged by Peter Blair.

Volenik took the stage to introduce the sixth-grade band.

“Our sixth-grade students are truly playing above a sixth-grade

level. They have learned how to play together as a band, which is difficult to accomplish because they only play together once a week. They do a fantastic job.

They listen well to each other. We hope you enjoy our sixth-grade band,” Volenik said.

The band opened with “Bryce Canyon Overture” by Mark Williams and moved into “Honor Roll March” by Mark Williams.

The students then performed “Baywood Overture” by James Swearingen.

“We’d like to bring Mr. Ohlin back out to conduct our sixthgraders in closing the concert with the state rock song of Ohio ‘Hang on Sloopy’,” Volenick said.

Ohlin led the band in a performance of “Hang on Sloopy,” arranged by John Edmondson.

One Octave Higher Ensemble receives Superior rating at state competition The Canfield High School’s One Octave Higher female ensemble choir traveled to Highland High School to compete in the State competition on April 22.

The ladies in this ensemble must go through a rigorous audition process to be chosen for the group and space is limited.

This OMEA large group adjudicated event attracts schools from all over the district and is a prestigious competition at which to participate.

T he One Octave H ig her Female Ensemble choir performed its selections in front of a panel of three judges who rated them from “I” being the best performance, to “V” being the very lowest score performance. These scores were then combined with a fourth judge who adjudicates sight-reading.

CHS senior receives NHS Leadership in Service Award On April 21, Canfield High School hosted a National Honor Society induction ceremony.

After the main portion of the ceremony, Administrative Advisor Tim Wensel presented the Leadership in Service award, beginning with a reading of quotes

from the student’s membership essay. Wensel continued by discussing the student’s senior service project with fellow soccer player Jeff Joseph, where they raised $4000 for Breast Cancer Awareness. It wasn’t until halfway through the speech that

Heather Haley, Canfield senior, realized that Wensel was talking about her.

When Haley was announced as the recipient of the 2016 National Honor Society Leadership in Service Award, she said that her experiences of serving others through NHS have changed

her life forever. She will soon graduate in the class of 2016 and pursue a career in Occupational Therapy at Westminster University.

Haley is proud to have her name added to the NHS plaque that will be displayed in Canfield High School.

The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center hosted its fifth annual McMudder race on May 20.

This end-of-the-year event features teams and individuals who run an obstacle course that is just shy of one mile and includes everything from an arctic plunge to a car push.

Compet itors a lso ra n through the woods and had to maneuver an over and under element before running through a muddy lake and then a swamp. At one point, the students who were competing as

teams had to carry one team member to the next station. To end the race, the competitors had to slide through a slip and slide and then flip a truck tire to the finish line.

MCCTC students have been preparing for this event for weeks. The Public Safety students were in charge of the course and made sure everything stayed in order; MultiMedia and Visual Design students made all the signage and T-shirts; Construction students built the arctic plunge pool for the course and Auto Technology students donated a car to use in the car push.

“We try to get as many MC-

CTC programs and students involved in the McMudder as we can. The race has doubled in size and now includes both students and teachers,” said Jessica Cene, MCCTC community engagement specialist.

Prizes were given for first through third place for both teams and individuals. Prizes were also given for the top four costumes, which students could vote for on social media. Matt Putzier served as McMudder coordinator.

In addition to the McMudder, the school offered an end-ofthe-year picnic for all students and staff, with the help of the Culinary Program students.

Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League welcomes new members

The GFWC Ohio Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League would like to welcome their newest members, Joyce Martin and Roseanne Winner.

The new members were installed at a candlelight ceremony by Linda Crish, GFWC Ohio First Vice President, on May 10 at Selah’s Restaurant during the annual Spring Social. Deidre DaVore, GFWC Ohio Director of Junior Clubs was a special guest.

Money from the 2015 Quarter Auction was distributed to the following recipients: Project Learning Around The World, The Together Journey, Friends of Fido, Ed Port, The Rescue Mission and Southside Fine Arts Academy. Each representative received $200. Funds from the recent Downton Abbey Farewell Tea hosted in March 2016 were given to Sister Anne representing the Dorothy Day House in Youngstown, receiving $1,305. In addition, $750 was given to two students for a Washington DC trip.

The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women ages 18 and up who are residing in Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties and who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. Seniors in the Aerospace Engineering class at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center had a unique hands on experiment designing a parachute using only the supplies they had in their lab. The goal of the activity was to slow a 5 pound weight to a speed of 6.5 feet per second. The two groups of students were then required to test their parachutes being dropped at 100 feet. With the help of Captain Troy Kollar and the Canfield Fire Department, Mr. Baber, Engineering/PLTW Instructor, tested the parachutes three time each. The bride-elect is a graduate of Youngstown State University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in special education. She is studying at Arizona State University online for a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction autism spectrum disorders. She also is a special education teacher at Struthers Middle School.

The prospective groom is a pilot with the rank of captain for the U.S. Air National Guard. He re-

ceived a bachelor’s degree in biology from Ohio State University.

Danielle Cuba v Eric Flaherty Danielle Cuba of Poland and Eric Flaherty of Struthers were married April 16 at Good Hope Lutheran Church. The 12:30 p.m. ceremony was officiated by the Rev. Robert Quaintance. A reception followed at the Elm Tree in Struthers.

Nancy Cuba of Poland is the mother of the bride, and Mike and Sherry Flaherty of Struthers are the groom’s parents.

The bride graduated from Mercy College as an ophthalmic assistant. She is employed by Retina Associates in Warren as an ophthalmic technician.

Her husband is a driver for Butch McCree Paving Inc., Hillsville, Pa., and earned an associate degree in criminal justice from ITT Technical Institute.

The bride’s grandfather, Richard Balog, walked her down the aisle. Bridesmaids were the bride’s sisters, Ashley and Brittany Cuba.

Monsignor Peter M. Polando officiated at the 1:30 p.m. ceremony for the daughter of James and Bonnie Hamrock of Poland and son of Laura Sammartino of Boardman.

A reception took place at The Lake Club. The couple honeymooned in St. Lucia.

The bride’s strapless ballgown was designed with a sweetheart neckline embellished with crystal embroidery and featured a corset-style back. The mutli-tiered handkerchief skirt was adorned with sprays of beading and flowed to a chapel train.

Maid of honor was the bride’s sister, Jaclyn Hamrock, and bridesmaids were Jennifer Codrea, the groom’s sister; Lisa Sammartino, the groom’s sister-in-law; Carrie Evans, the bride’s cousin; Christa Schroedel, the groom’s cousin; Krista Giannios; Danielle McClain; Allie Greene; and Kate Barringer. They wore black gowns with crystal accents. Junior bridesmaid was the groom’s niece, Francesca Sammartino, and flower girl was Giavanna Sammartino, the groom’s niece and goddaughter.

Mrs. Sammartino holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Youngstown State University and a master’s degree in nurse anesthesia from the University of Akron. She is a certified Ohio registered nurse anesthetist at the Surgical Hospital at Southwoods in Boardman.

A graduate of John Carroll University with a bachelor’s degree in education, Mr. Sammartino is an English and history teacher and coach with the Lowellville Local Schools.

It was hosted by their children, Sharon and Michael Tomcsanyi and Carolyn and Sam Alonso and their grandchildren, Kelly and Lindsay Tomcsanyi, Mike and Nicole Tabachino; and step-grandchildren Samantha, Sabrina and Savannah Alonso.

The couple met at the Canfield Fair and were married April 16, 1966, in Youngstown.

Mrs. Giba retired from Alltel Communications from an administrative career. Mr. Giba is employed with Austintown School District and

retired from General Motors Lordstown where he worked for 40 years.

Ashley Orr, Daniel Catello will marry

tends Mercy College of Nursing and is employed at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital.

Dr. Esarco is graduated from OU and Palmer College of Chiropractic. He is a chiropractor at Ohio Specific in Boardman.

Ashley Orr of Youngstown and Daniel Catello of Kent, Ohio, are engaged and planning to be married.

Their parents are announcing their engagement.

Her mother is Cara Burt-Orr of Columbiana, and his parents are Wayne Catello of Kinsman and Diane and Michael Jordon of Austintown.

The couple are planning a July wedding at Jerusalem Lutheran Church in Columbiana.

Invitations will be issued.

The bride-elect graduated from Youngstown State University recently with bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and economics. She will pursue a degree in economics at the University of Oxford in London, England, as a Rhodes scholar.

The prospective groom graduated from YSU with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and economics. He is employed as an actuarial analyst for National Interstate Insurance.
