PHYLLIS
Cookie is a 3-year-old orange male cat that was left in a foreclosed house. He gets along with the other cats in the shelter and is no problem at all. Cookie is a nice cat that would surely make someone very happy. The shelter is not sure how he would react around dogs and children, but he seems pretty mellow so he may do great with children. Stop by the shelter and ask for a Cookie.
Phyllis is happiest when she gets to play outside in the sunshine. She is available for adoption, and must be the only dog in her home. Once you meet this sweet girl you will see that she is all you need. Message on the Pawz 2 Adopt Facebook page if you are interested in meeting Phyllis.

Union Students become firemen for a day By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Students at Union Elementary had the opportunity to visit the Poland Fire Department on May 21. The Poland Rotary partnered with Union Elementary principal Mike Masucci to organize a trip for some of the Union Elementary students to visit the fire department. When the students arrived, they had the opportunity to explore the fire station and sit inside of the fire trucks. Both the children and their parents showed their excitement and gratefulness that the Poland Rotary members and Bill O’Hara, fire prevention officer, gave them the chance to have the fire station to themselves. Many of the students picked
out different places in the fire department to get their pictures taken by themselves and with their friends. One of the students who loves all kinds of trucks was more than happy to explore the fire truck and station. The students were supposed to plant flowers with the Poland Rotary prior to visiting the fire department, but the rain prevented that from happening. The students were still happy they got to visit the fire station, even if they didn’t have the chance to plant flowers. The students were excited to spend time with each other outside of school while doing something that many students don’t have the opportunity to do. They also received fire hats Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci to take home as a souvenir to Twins Quintino and Giada DeSantis sat on the side of the fire truck on May 21 at the Poland Fire Department during their visit with other Union Elementary students. remember their trip.

Cassie Nespor from the Melnick Medical Museum of Youngstown State University brought in artifacts to the Little Red Schoolhouse on May 17 from the Civil War era that were used in the medical field.
Historical society learns about Civil War medicine By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Poland Historical Society welcomed Cassie Nespor from t he Melnick Medica l Museum of Youngstown State University to the Little Red Schoolhouse to give a presentation on Civil War medicine on May 17. Nespor started in 2009 going to different places around the community giving presentations about the history of different medical practices during certain time periods.
She brings in artifacts, some replica and some authentic, for the guests to look at and examine after her presentation. “I pass those things out to the kids so they get to feel what a stethoscope looked like in 1820 and how it was used compared to a stethoscope today,” said Nespor. Nespor works in Maag Library at YSU in the University Archives in special collections. There she takes care the artifacts in the University Archives and to do exhibits in the library with the archive
materials. Nespor created a slide show to show to the Poland Historical Society members. The members often asked questions about the different medical techniques and equipment used. Nespor was very engaging w it h t he audience and willing to answer questions to the best of her abilities. The Melnick Medical Museum has its ow n YouTube channel where the employees create videos pertaining to the different objects found in the University Archives.

Hands-on activities engage Dobbins students By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Dobbins Elementar y students got to explore the science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) world on May 18 when Mobile Ed Productions, Inc. came to the school. Mobile Ed Productions is a nat ionw ide compa ny a nd started in 1979. There are more than 30 educational programs Mobile Ed offers that are suited for children in kindergarten through eighth-grade. The pro-
grams are often aligned with the common core curriculum that the students are learning in the classroom. The sessions are 45 minutes and can occur up to eight times during the day. Dave Mitchell, an independent contractor with Mobile Ed Productions, Inc. covers areas from Minnesota to Texas putting on programs for schools, libraries, organizations and several other community events. Mitchell has been with the company for 10 years and travels all around setting up different programs for children to enjoy.
Although the constant traveling can get tedious, Mitchell says working with the children and seeing how much fun they have makes up for it. “My favorite part is really working with the kids,” said Mitchell. A couple classes at a time came to the g ymnasium to participate in the different activities Mitchell had prepared. Each group had 35 minutes to explore before the next group came in. There was a friction raceway, a build-a-bridge, a humanoid robot, a 3D printer and
more. Several of the students agreed their favorite part of STEAM wa s t he hu ma noid robot, whose name was NAO, and the 3D printer. The bike generator was a big hit among many of the students. They stood in line to ride the bike as fast as they could to generate kinetic energy into electricity. The more power the students generated, the more the connecting tower would light up. “Being with the kids and doing the performances, I really enjoy that,” said Mitchell.

Host families needed The Mahoning Valley Ulster project is a summer exchange program that brings together teen leaders from Northern Ire-
land and the United States. Founded in 1975, the program offers spiritual, social and service opportunities to help the students discover the common ground they share despite religious differences. Each year, Valley families play host to more than a dozen Northern Irish teens for this enriching experience. The group is searching for host families for two boys from Northern Ireland. Teens will arrive on June 27 and will depart on July 27. The host family should have a male teen between the ages of 14 and 17. This life-changing experience includes six service projects (Purple Cat, Potential Development, Mill Creek Children’s Center, Habitat for Humanity, Jubilee Gardens and Zion Lutheran Food Bank) as well as many fun events, such as a Scrappers Game, a road rally and a trip to Cedar Point to name a few. If you are interested in hosting a teen, contact Greg at 330-770-1440. For more information, visit ulsterprojectmv.com.

A group of Mahoning County Career and Technical Center students re-hydrated after they participated in the school’s annual McMudder obstacle course on May 20.
MCCTC Students get down and dirty By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center hosted its fifth annual McMudder race on May 20. This end-of-the-year event features teams and individuals who run an obstacle course that is just shy of one mile and includes everything from an arctic plunge to a car push. Compet itors a lso ra n through the woods and had to maneuver an over and under element before running through a muddy lake and then a swamp. At one point, the students who were competing as
teams had to carry one team member to the next station. To end the race, the competitors had to slide through a slip and slide and then flip a truck tire to the finish line. MCCTC students have been preparing for this event for weeks. The Public Safety students were in charge of the course and made sure everything stayed in order; MultiMedia and Visual Design students made all the signage and T-shirts; Construction students built the arctic plunge pool for the course and Auto Technology students donated a car to use in the car push. “We try to get as many MC-
CTC programs and students involved in the McMudder as we can. The race has doubled in size and now includes both students and teachers,” said Jessica Cene, MCCTC community engagement specialist. Prizes were given for first through third place for both teams and individuals. Prizes were also given for the top four costumes, which students could vote for on social media. Matt Putzier served as McMudder coordinator. In addition to the McMudder, the school offered an end-ofthe-year picnic for all students and staff, with the help of the Culinary Program students.

Students at Dobbins and Union Elementary participated in Career Day on May 20. Lauren Mechling, Poland’s Elementary School Counselor, worked with intern Katie Cretella to put the Career Day together. The day was split into two sessions, one in the morning at Dobbins and one in the afternoon at Union. Mechling and Cretella contacted surrounding business in Mahoning Valley by sending out flyers and waited to see who contacted them back. “Parent involvement, different connections in the community. It just builds,” said Cretella. Sweeney Chevrolet attended, as well as Peg Flynn from the Green Team, Diamond Steele, the Poland Fire Department, a paramedic, One Hot Cookie and several others. A few of the businesses contacted other business who they thought might also want to be involved. A few parents volunteered their
time to come in and talk to the students about their profession. “We have Rookery Radio here and they’re doing a pre-recorded show. Our students will be on the one o’clock and three o’clock Rookery Radio show introducing songs and whatnot, they’re excited,” said Cretella. The students had the opportunity to use the DJ equipment to remix a song for Rookery Radio. As one student was using the mixers, the other students enjoyed dancing to the music and visiting with Pete the Penguin. Ma ny of t he busi nesses brought souvenirs for the students to take home. The businesses who brought different kinds of vehicles allowed the students to sit in the seat and see what they are like on the inside. “We wanted both schools to be exposed to it. We didn’t want to ask them to dedicate two days to us, so we asked if we could do the morning at Dobbins and the afternoon at Union. We didn’t want K-2 to miss out on the exposure,” said Cretella.
