Redeemer Lutheran to offer vacation Bible school Redeemer Lutheran Church will host its annual vacation Bible school on July 10-12 from 9:30 a.m. until noon at the church, located at 2305 S. Canfield-Niles Road in Austintown. On July 12, there will be a lunch for everyone (including parents) at noon. The theme will be “Camp Out Getting S’more of Jesus.” There will be crafts, games, gifts, music, fun and of course s’mores. Legends of Asgard Local teenagers will gather to perform and celebrate the ancient myths of Norse culture at the Austintown library on July 17 at 11 a.m. Learn how Odin became the god he is and how he met his mighty end. Celebrate with the library as these talented young people teach an interesting history lesson through a fantastic performance. This event is for school-age children.

Austintown library hosts therapy dog

Austintown library hosted the monthly Read to Reese event on June 21.

Au st i ntow n E lement a r y School teacher Dana Patrick volunteers to bring her dog Reese, a registered therapy dog, to the library to listen to children read.

“Reading is fundamental,” said librarian Rhonda Monroe.

“It can have a real impact on students confidence.”

During the event Reese, a miniature golden doodle, sits in a meeting room with Patrick, with children taking turns coming in to read.

Monroe said that Patrick visits the library for an hour, with children visiting in 15 minute intervals.

Usually, Monroe said about seven children are able to read to Reese in one session.

“We see a huge impact with the children who come back consistently,” Monroe said.

She explained that practicing reading aloud helps children develop their reading comprehension and speaking skills.

YMCA hosts Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Kennedy Family Fund of The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley to support its fifth annual Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.: Finding Rewards In Every New Day, an inclusive day camp experience for children, teens and young adult students with autism and their friends. The first program of its kind in the Mahoning Valley, Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. is facilitated by ABA Therapy Solutions. Camp will take place July 15-19 and Aug. 12-16 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. each day at the Central YMCA in Youngstown. The grant will help more families share in this fun, summer rite of passage by allowing the camp to expand the number of campers that can attend and enabling the Autism Society of Mahoning Valley to offer financial-based scholarships. Camp costs $150 per student per week and financial scholarships are available. Registration forms are available for download at AutismMV.org/campfriend and can be mailed by request by emailing ASMV at camp@autismmv.org. The Autism Society is still welcoming volunteers, interns and neurotypical peers to assist. Donations from individuals and business sponsorships are currently being accepted to help defer additional costs.

The Mahoning County Medical Society Alliance presented a check for $20,000 to Phyllis Ricchiuti, cofounder/board member of The Rich Center for Autism, during a board meeting on May 29 at The Lake Club in Poland. The proceeds were from the annual fashion show on April 5 at Mr. Anthony’s. The Medical Alliance is a group of physicians’ spouses with a mission to inform and support the medical family, and to enhance the quality of life through education, legislation and community service throughout the Mahoning Valley.

Austintown Lions Club hosts 24th annual 5K run The weather was bright and sunny on May 11 at Austintown Township Park as the Austintown Lions Club hosted their 24th annual 5-K Run. The event began with a Kids Run, which was won by 8-yearold Rylan Pacanowski of Austintown.

The Austintown library hosted a string vase crafting event on May 6.

Librarian Renee Beverly organized the event.

“It’s an easy project, and it makes a cute Mother’s Day idea,” Beverly said.

After wrapping the string, community members chose from a number of fake flowers to finish the art piece.

Austintow n Intermediate School hosted the Muffins for Mom event starting on May 7.

School Principal Angel Owens said that this was the first time the school hosted the event.

“We usually hold the grandparents day and the donuts for dads event, so it was a natural step,” Owens said.

During the event, mothers

brought their children to school early to enjoy breakfast together.

Assistant Principal Tim Pappagallo said that the school’s cafeteria staff worked to make breakfasts of fruit, muffins and more for the families to enjoy.

“It’s just a fun event, and a good way for moms to spend time with their kids as it gets closer to Mother’s Day,” Pappagallo said.

Spay and neuter clinic offers local event Alleycat Spay and Neuter Clinic will be coming to the Austintown Ohio area for additional dates for its low cost spay/neuter transport program. “It’s a fun event where children get to celebrate Mother’s Day and do something fun together,” Cowles said.

The event was organized for school-age children and their

families.

Children and their parents showed up dressed in tea party attire.

They enjoyed snacks of tea, lemonade cookies and muffins throughout the event.

The Michael Kusalaba library hosted the first laser cut puzzle making event on May 11.

Librarian Hannah Matulek helped community members use personal photos and make them into puzzles to take home.

“It’s easy using the tools we have set up at the library,” Matulek said.

Community members in attendance were required to attend the library’ Makerspace Orientation Class beforehand.

During the event, community members added photos to a Microsoft Word document.

Matulek shows attendees how to cut the background out of the pictures leaving only the intended portion.

Some community members also chose to add words to the puzzle.

After completing the design, Matulek sent the information to the library’s laser engraver.

The engraver carve the images onto wood, that was then cut into a 12 by 12 puzzle shape.

“It can be a great Mother’s Day gift, or just something nice and personal for them to take home,” Matulek said.

June 20 Criminal damaging: A vehicle at a Mahoning Avenue big-box store sustained damage.

Possible theft: A briefcase containing perfume products, credit cards and other items was lost or stolen at Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course, 655 N. Canfield-Niles Road.

Theft: A license plate was stolen off a vehicle in the 1200 block of Cavalcade Drive.

June 21 Criminal damaging: A South Raccoon Road woman alleged a man with whom she had been in a relationship used a key to scrawl a derogatory word on her vehicle, apparently after they had broken up and she deactivated cellphone service for a number he had used.

Felonious assault: Authorities received information that a male had been struck by a car in the 10 block of North Edgehill Avenue before the victim was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

Fraud: A former employee reportedly tried to cash such a check at Los Girasoles, a Mexican restaurant at 5495 Clarkins Drive.

Criminal damaging: Officers received a complaint about a vehicle that had been damaged in the 400 block of South Raccoon Road.

Theft: A money clip was stolen at Walmart, 6001 Mahoning Ave.

Lisbon Road, Salem, who was wanted on a receiving-stolen-property warrant, related to a Jan. 23 situation in which someone reportedly was returning two stolen items valued at a total of $93 to Tractor Supply Co., 6225 Mahoning Ave. A check of the business’s computer listed the merchandise as stolen, a police report indicated.

Drugs: Police responded to possible drug activity in a vehicle at Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course before conducting a traffic stop and charging Belinda G. Cooper, 35, with possessing drug paraphernalia and drug abuse (marijuana). Surveillance footage showed the Cuyahoga Falls woman smoking from what appeared to be a methamphetamine pipe in the car in a valet parking lot; also, suspected marijuana was in her purse, authorities alleged.

June 24 Overdose: A man was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after police had responded to a likely drug overdose in the 200 block of South Roanoke Avenue.

Theft: A laptop computer was removed from an unlocked car in the 5400 block of Clarkins Drive.

Theft: Someone in the 5600 block of Baylor Avenue took $15 from inside a vehicle.

Possible theft: A wallet was reported lost or stolen at Walmart.

Drugs: Authorities pulled over a vehicle near Rhode Island Drive, where they cited Tyler J. Dolak of Lynn Road, North Lima; David A. Fitzer of Sharrott Run Road, North Lima; and Johannes J. Smit of Rhode Island Drive, Austintown, on drug-abuse charges after alleging a partially burned suspected marijuana cigarette and three suspected marijuana cigarettes were found. In addition, an officer behind them saw the three 18-yearold men smoking marijuana in their Jeep with its top off, a report stated.

Theft: Gabriel T. Davis, 22, of West Dennick Avenue, Youngstown, was charged with intentionally neglecting to self-scan a 12-pack of liquor, food, three swimsuits and clothing valued at $65 while in Walmart.

Happily Ever After Cunningham, DeAngelo rite set for Nov. 23 canfield

Attorney Edward and Elizabeth DeAngelo of Canfield are announcing the engagement of their son, Daniel DeAngelo, to Nicole Cunningham, both of Los Angeles.

The bride-elect is the daughter of Gary Cunningham of Burlington, Ontario, Canada, and the late Yvette Brandeis.

The couple will marry during a 2 p.m. ceremony Nov. 23 at Pioneertown in Joshua Tree, Calif., where an evening reception will follow. Invitations will be extended for both events.

Miss Cunningham is a graduate of the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. She is an integrated-media supervisor at Quigley Simpson in Los an operations/entertainment manager Angeles.

Mr. DeAngelo graduated from John at Lucky Strike Entertainment Venues Carroll University in Cleveland. He is in Los Angeles.

The Trumans honored for golden jubilee BOARDMAN

Dave and Mary Jo Truman of Boardman recently were honored for their 50th anniversary with a dinner party at Avion on the Water in Canfield, a vow renewal, and a trip to the historic African-American Museum of History in Washington, D.C. The dinner party was hosted by the couple’s children, Dr. Michelle (Randy) Jones of Streetsboro and David (Resha) Truman of Liberty.

Four grandchildren, Peyton and Tariq Truman and Randi and Michaela Jones, complete their family.

The renewal of vows was conducted by minister Sheila Smith of Akron, a cousin of Mrs. Truman.

Mr. Truman married the former Mary Jo Logan on April 2, 1969, in Sharon, Pa. Mrs. Truman, MSSA, LISW, is a retired administrator with the Mahoning County Children Services Board and part-time faculty at Youngstown State University in the social-work department. She volunteers and participates

in various community organizations.

Mr. Truman is a retired detective from the Youngstown Police Department and the Youngstown State University Police Department.

The couple are members of Union Baptist Church in Youngstown.

After a honeymoon in Orlando, Fla., the couple reside in McDonald.
