YMCA hosts Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Kennedy Family Fund of The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley to support its fifth annual Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.: Finding Rewards In Every New Day, an inclusive day camp experience for children, teens and young adult students with autism and their friends. The first program of its kind in the Mahoning Valley, Camp

F.R.I.E.N.D. is facilitated by ABA Therapy Solutions. Camp will take place July 15-19 and Aug. 12-16 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. each day at the Central YMCA in Youngstown. The grant will help more families share in this fun, summer rite of passage by allowing the camp to expand the number of campers that can attend and enabling the Autism Society of Mahoning Valley to offer financial-based scholarships. Camp costs $150 per student per week and financial scholarships are available. Registration forms are available for download at AutismMV.org/campfriend and can be mailed by request by emailing ASMV at camp@autismmv. org. The Autism Society is still welcoming volunteers, interns and neurotypical peers to assist. Donations from individuals and business sponsorships are currently being accepted to help defer additional costs.

Chalk the sidewalks Activities at Celebrate Poland on June 29 begin early with the annual Chalk the Walks for Poland contest at 8:30 a.m. The arts and crafts show opens at 11 a.m. with many vendors and historical displays. Throughout the day, there is the Poland Idol singing contest, free activities for children, mini golf, a blueberry pie baking contest, a walking tour of Main Street and a softball game between police officers and firemen. On Saturday evening a DJ will play music from 5-10 p.m. when the annual fireworks display takes place at the old stadium. And, of course, there are many beverage and food vendors of all kinds available for everyone to enjoy all day and evening.

Recent Poland Seminary High School graduate Galena Lopuchovsky visited the Poland Rotary on June 18 at the Magic Tree Pub & Eatery in Boardman. Lopuchovsky attended the group’s general meeting to say thank you for the gift of the $1,000 scholarship earlier this year. Larry Warren, a member of the Poland Rotary, said that the money came from a memorial scholarship under the name of Carmella Smallhoover, a former Poland Principal. “We have been giving this scholarship out for 35 years, since the club became active,” Warren said. He said that Smallhoover was a well known figure in the area, who was known for her compassion and the impact that she had on the Poland community. “The scholarship does focus on service, since the rotary is a service based group,” Warren said. “But also on character and integrity.” Lopuchovsky read the rotary a portion of her commencement speech, in which she discussed the impact Smallhoover had on the lives of the graduating stu-

dents. “I wrote the speech before I even knew I received the scholarship,” she said. Along with achieving valedictorian status and being chosen to give the commencement speech, Lopuchovsky also volunteered with a number of organizations during her high school years. She was the president of the new Interact Club at Poland High School, organized by the Poland Rotary.

She also volunteered for the school’s Big Dog Little Dog program, as a Camp Fitch Counselor, as a volunteer coach for the middle school girls basketball team and for Hoby, a leadership organization. It was this community work that Warren said made Lopuchovsky an obvious choice for the scholarship. He said that the group received about 15 applications for the scholarship, and based the de-

cision on essays written by the students. “It’s about dedicating yourself to the community,” Lopuchovsky said. “I mean, the rotary’s motto is promoting service above self.” Warren said that the club funds the scholarship annually with the funds from the chili open event they host. He explained that next year the group will be giving away an additional scholarship thanks to a grant.

Public Library with LitYoungstown receives an NEA Big Read Grant T he P ubl ic L ibra r y of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) with LitYoungstown received a grant of $15,000 to host the NEA Big Read in Mahoning County. An initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. The Grant to PLYMC with LitYoungstown is one of 78 given to nonprofits by NEA Big Read to host a community reading program between September 2019 and June 2020. The NEA Big Read in Mahoning County will focus on “Into the Beautiful North” by Luis Alberto Urrea, who will make appearances in Mahoning County this fall. The community will be encouraged to read “Into the Beautiful North” at that time. Information about the author visit and surrounding events will be released as soon as possible after final arrangements are made. “We are very excited to have received a grant for an NEA Big Read in our community,” Aimee Fifarek, PLYMC Executive Director, said. “What a wonderful opportunity to bring a love of

Poland Historical Society revamps Little Red School House By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

The Poland Historical Society volunteered to revamp aspects of the Little Red Schoolhouse on June 2. Members cleaned and organized the inside of the building, and worked outside on maintenance and landscaping. “We worked really hard,” said society member Laurie Fox. Member John Himes worked on the outside of schoolhouse, which he scraped, primed and painted. Another member, F. David Anderson, replaced the rotting wood on the bell tower. Old dying shrubs and plants were also removed and replaced with new shrubs and flowers by members. “The society is very appreciative of recent generous dona-

tions specifically earmarked for painting and landscaping from the Poland Women’s Club, the Trailwood Gardeners Club and Thrivent Action Team,” Fox said. “The society is dependent on donations and membership dues to continue to maintain the Little Red Schoolhouse and the museum artifacts inside the building.” Fox said that the public is invited to attend an open house at the School House on June 9 from 1-3 p.m. “This is a great opportunity to visit the museum and to check out the hard work that members have been doing,” Fox said. Mother Earth and Green Team Join the Green Team this summer at Mahoning County libraries for a fun and exciting program. At this program, at the Poland library on July 16 at 10 a.m., Mother Earth herself will be reading the book, “Dear Children of the Earth” by Schim Schimmel. This powerful and dramatically illustrated letter from Mother Earth to her children is a tender reminder of the responsibility everyone has to protect the world. After reading the book, the group will create earth-friendly crafts made from recovered material. At the conclusion of the program, participants will receive Earththemed coloring books and recycling information to share with their parents. This program is recommended for children in grades pre-K through 5.

The Poland library hosted a dough making event on May 20 called No Need to Knead. Community members gathered at the library where librarian Missy Williams organized supplies and instructions for the event. “I have always loved to bake, I learned how to make bread when I was in high school,” Williams said.

The committee that plans the annual community festival known as Celebrate Poland has been at work for several months. The committee recently announced two new exciting features for this year’s event. The historic Truesdale home at 214 S. Main Street, owned by Atty. Michael Thompson, will be open for tours from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on June 29. The 200-year old home is one of the oldest homes in Poland and Mahoning County. A $5 donation is being asked and all proceeds will be used to help fund Celebrate Poland. At 4 p.m. on that same day, the Poland Township and Village police officers will square off with the firefighters of the Western Reserve Joint Fire District in a softball game at Firemen’s Field on Riverside Drive. A trophy will be presented to the winners at 6 p.m. at the stage behind Village Hall. Celebrate Poland will take place on the grounds of Village Hall, located at 308 S. Main Street, and the practice field adjoining the property. The event is set for June 28 and 29.

Pink Ribbon Golf Classic set for July 15 The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. The cost is $110 per golfer. Historical society to host day trip The Poland Historical Society will host a day trip to Pittsburgh on Sept. 18. The itinerary begins when the bus leaves from the Poland Methodist Church, located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road, at 8:30 a.m., arriving in Pittsburgh at 10 a.m. and includes a visit to the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden, lunch at the Schenley Park Café, followed by a tour of the Frick Art and Historical Center and the Clayton Mansion. The bus will leave Pittsburgh at 5 p.m. for the return trip to Poland. The cost of this fundraiser bus trip is $115 and includes the bus, admissions and lunch. YWCA accepting entries for 37th annual Women’s Art Exhibition YWCA Mahoning Valley is accepting entries for its 37th Annual Women Artists: A Celebration! Art Show to take place June 28 through July 26 at YWCA’s downtown Youngstown office, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The art exhibition showcases work by local, regional and national women artists. The juried show features all media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, videography and metal work. Returning for a second time is a juried show for young women ages 14-17 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The show will feature seventeen works selected by jurors from the YWCA Women Artists Committee and will run in conjunction with the Women Artists show. Two-dimensional work is eligible for the 17 Under 17 show. Entry forms for both shows are available at YWCA’s offices in Youngstown and Warren and on the YWCA’s website at ywcamahoningvalley.org/women-artists. Entries are due by April 8. The couple will marry during a 2 p.m. ceremony Nov. 23 at Pioneertown in Joshua Tree, Calif., where an evening reception will follow. Invitations will be extended for both events. Miss Cunningham is a graduate of the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. She is an integrated-media supervisor at Quigley Simpson in Los an operations/entertainment manager Angeles. Mr. DeAngelo graduated from John at Lucky Strike Entertainment Venues Carroll University in Cleveland. He is in Los Angeles.

Dave and Mary Jo Truman of Boardman recently were honored for their 50th anniversary with a dinner party at Avion on the Water in Canfield, a vow renewal, and a trip to the historic African-American Museum of History in Washington, D.C. The dinner party was hosted by the couple’s children, Dr. Michelle (Randy) Jones of Streetsboro and David (Resha) Truman of Liberty. Four grandchildren, Peyton and Tariq Truman and Randi and Michaela Jones, complete their family. The renewal of vows was conducted by minister Sheila Smith of Akron, a cousin of Mrs. Truman. Mr. Truman married the former Mary Jo Logan on April 2, 1969, in Sharon, Pa. Mrs. Truman, MSSA, LISW, is a retired administrator with the Mahoning County Children Services Board and part-time faculty at Youngstown State University in the social-work department. She volunteers and participates

in various community organizations. Mr. Truman is a retired detective from the Youngstown Police Department and the Youngstown State University Police Department. The couple are members of Union Baptist Church in Youngstown.
