Hilltoppers donate to Angels for Animals By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
Hilltop Elementary School students in Marie Rupert’s third-grade class became mini entrepreneurs as they created their own business. As part of an economics lesson, the students brainstormed ideas and decided to sell personalized supply boxes to their fellow Hilltoppers. Using a Cricut machine, Rupert applied a white cardinal head and a red name on each supply box with transfer tape, with the students helping to pull off the tape to reveal the final product. Several parents also helped with the project. The students sold 102 boxes and decided to donate the money raised to Angels for Animals. “I originally thought we would make about $1 on each box, but then I found the boxes on sale, so that helped increase our profits. We sold 102 boxes and made a total of $380.80. I talked to the kids and we made a list on the board of different places that we could donate the money we made. Then each student had a chance to vote for the recipient of the money by putting a tally mark next to its name, and Angels for Animals had the most votes. It was totally the students’ decision,” Rupert said. Julie Meier, outreach manager of Angels for Animals, visited the school to accept the donation and talk to the students about dog and cat safety for summer. As a special treat, Meier brought Mindy, a 2-year-old dog up for adoption, with her to visit the students. “Thank you so much for this donation. We really appreciate it. What a great group of children you are. Your fundraising efforts on behalf of our dogs is such a wonderful and inspiring story,” Meier told the students. Meier also asked the children to tell their pet stories and gave them some summer pet safety tips and handed out a booklet titled, “Let’s Be Safe Around Cats and Dogs.” “Most of the tips are simple, like never pull a dog’s tail or ear. And it is really important to ask someone if you can pet their dog before you do. Don’t enter a yard where there is a dog you don’t know and never tease a dog that has been left in a car in a parking lot. Go inside and tell someone. And even better yet, never leave a dog in a car. Be sure to give your pets the proper care. They need fresh, cold water every day, especially in the summer,” Meier told the students. Along with the donation of $380.80, the students presented Meier with drawings they had created. “Thank you for these great drawings. I am going to hang them in the dog wing so everyone can see the wonderful thing you have done for Angels for Animals,” Meier said. Rupert said the children learned in several ways with this endeavor. “This gives our students an understanding of what a business looks like, and feels like in a tangible way to understand the curriculum. Additionally, the students learned the value in giving back with their donation,” Rupert said.

CHC kindergartners perform “E-I-E-I Oops” By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
C.H. Campbell Elementary School kindergarten students of presented “E-I-E-I Oops!” for family and friends at the Canfield High School auditorium on May 31. Michael Fay, C.H. Campbell music specialist, directed the students in this musical play for young voices by John Jacobson and John Higgins. Fay welcomed the large crowd to the show. “Good evening everyone and welcome to our performance. Your children are a huge blessing and I am fortunate enough to watch them grow from day
to day. They are ready for first grade. I am looking forward to watching them grow through their years at CH and beyond. I will work hard for them every single day and I look forward to seeing them every single day,” Fay said. The play opened in the barnyard of “Farmer MacDonald” and the whole barnyard is singing, including roosters, mules, chicks, pigs and sheep, but the cow cannot moo. The pigs, chicks and sheep all chime in to give suggestions, but “Mr. Mule” is the one who finds the secret to the cow’s silence. All the animals do their part to save the day. The play is an example of friendship,
self esteem and confidence. The students opened the show with “E-I-E-I Oops!” and moved into “Ham it Up,” with a focus on the students portraying pigs. The students told pig jokes and sang short solos. The next song was “Lost Sheep” featuring three sheep and “Little Bo Peep.” “Cute Chicks” was then performed with the spotlight on students dressed as chicks. The students closed their show with “The Whole Barnyard is Singin,’” with focus on all the animals helping the cow finally moo, much to the delight of their audience and barnyard animals alike.

Canfield students shine at annual art show By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
Families, friends, students, community members and art aficionados attended the 2017 Canfield Local Schools Student Art Show, which highlighted works of art from C.H. Campbell Elementary School, Hilltop Elementary School, Canfield Village Middle School and Canfield High School students, at the high school gymnasium on May 2425. Several hundred pieces of art were displayed from high school art students. Senior art students created their own display booths and chose which pieces of art from their classes they wanted to showcase. The art students used several mediums to create their pieces, including computer graphics, 3-D sculptures, digital imaging, movies, pencil drawings, oil on canvas and photography. Each piece of the high school students’ art was entered into the judging. Medals were awarded to the top 69 award winners, with trophies going to the top 10 winners. The top 10 included: best of show - Lindsay Green; first runner up - Raquel Markulin; second runner up - Gabby Scianna; third runner up - Aidyn Jones; fourth runner up - Nick Palermo; fifth runner up - Natalie Brown; sixth runner up - Bailey Brocker; seventh runner up - Kate Jenkins; eighth runner up - Alyssa Gonda and ninth runner up - Emily
Dunlap. Judging the art show was Mark Shohayda, retired Canfield Local School District art teacher. Shohayda retired after teaching art for 39 years, 36 of which were in Canfield. He is a graduate of Youngstown State University and holds a BFA. Shohayda has exhibited his own art at the Butler Institute of American Art, Trumbull Art Guild, The Hoyt and other galleries and venues. Kathryn Antal and Kevin Hoopes are the Canfield High School fine art teachers and Pete Graff is the computer graphics instructor. Nancy Hulea and Heidi Garwig serve as art teachers at CVMS and Diane Leonard is the elementary art teacher at both Hilltop Elementary and C.H. Campbell Elementary. Students of Teri Dance, Canfield High School Family and Consumer Science teacher, also displayed their projects, along with students of Wood Tech teacher John Ihnat. Engineering Graphics and Robotics students of Don Crum were also represented at the show. Best of Show winner, and AP Art student, Green won with her piece, “Worry,” an acrylics painting. The piece also placed second in the Mahoning County Art Show. Green will attend Youngstown State University in the fall and will continue with art classes. “I was excited to win Best of Show, but also a bit surprised. I‘d like to thank Mr. Hoopes and
Mrs. Antal,” Green said. Second runner up, and AP Art student, Scianna is a photography student, which is a rarity. She will be attending Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota. Fla. in the fall. “Canfield doesn’t really have a photography program, so I am kind of self taught, with the help of Mr. Hoopes and Mrs. Antal. They pushed me and inspired me, which allowed me to put myself out there. It turned out not have a photography class gave me the opportunity to be a better photographer. I’d like to become a fashion photographer, with the goal of shooting New York Fashion Week. I love people and want to broadcast my work so everybody can see it,” Scianna. Fourth runner up, and senior AP Art student, Nick Palermo will attend Ohio University in the Scripps School of Journalism in the fall. “In the Scripps School of Journalism, they have visual communications open ended majors so I will be able to choose my field. I am going to minor in studio art. Ultimately, I’d like to design album covers or become a clothing designer,” Palermo said. Palermo also praised the Canfield High School Art Department. “The Canfield High School Art Department is dedicated to their students and this show. We are fortunate to have such dedicat-
