Immaculate Heart of Mary hosts vacation Bible school Immaculate Heart of Mary is hosting a vacation Bible school July 16-19 from 5:30-8 p.m. This year’s theme is “Sweet on Jesus!” This event is open to anyone interested and will feature supper, snacks, crafts and music. Austintown Fitch stadium closure Greenwood Chevrolet Austintown Falcon Stadium, including the track and field will be closed the week of July 9. All stadium lighting will be replaced with LEDs during the closure. This is to ensure the safety of all staff, students and community members. The stadium, track and field are expected to be open for all school related activities and the public on July 16.

Pasta dinner fundraiser to be July 8 The Knights of Columbus #3930 from Immaculate Heart of Mary will be having a pasta dinner fundraiser on July 8 from 12-5 p.m. It will take place at The Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Center, located at 4500 Norquest

Boulevard in Austintown. Dinners cost $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 6 -9 and children under 6 eat free. All dinners include pasta and meatballs, tossed salad, bread and butter, dessert and beverages. There will be a 50/50 raffle. This fundraiser is taking place for Rosemarie King who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Bingo benefit to be July 8 There will be a Bingo benefit for Rosemarie King, wife of the Immaculate Heart of Mary custodian, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. This event will take place at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Center, located at 4500 Norquest Boulevard in Austintown, on July 8. Bingo games will begin at 6:15 p.m. The cost is $10 for a minimum master set.

There will be eight games, 60/40 split.

The last game will be a coverall with $100 added to the pot. No master sets will be sold after 6 p.m. Snacks and refreshments will be available.

Local restaurant hosts tasting event The Manor Restaurant will host a Craft Beer and Crepe Tasting on July 14 from 5-7 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Sweet and savory crepes will be featured along with local brewers Paladin Brewing, Biker Brewhouse, Birdfish Brewing Company and Numbers Brewing Company. The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its July 10 meeting at the Georgeanne Parker Pavilion in Boardman Park. The meeting will begin with networking at 6 p.m. and a picnic style dinner will start at 6:30 p.m. The menu will include chicken, provided by the Chapter, and an assortment of casseroles brought by each member. The Hopewell Theatre announces a diverse 2018-19 season The Hopewell Theatre recently announced its 2018-19 season, promising a lineup of contemporary, well-known shows, including two musicals. The Hopewell Theatre is located at 702 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown. Children study the science of water at library

Austintown library looked to teach children about the science of water at their Explore Water All Around Us event on June 27.

To kick off the event, the children listened to a reading of “Water Can Be,” a book about all the different things water is

a part of in the world.

A librarian then did a demonstration for the children where she took two different types of diapers to see which was more absorbent.

Children took g uesses at which would be better, then the librarian gradually poured bottles of water on both of them to demonstrate what it means to be absorbent.

After the demonstration children were allowed to explore five stations that were set up to do experiments and art projects related to water.

At the water diffusing station children were encouraged to draw on coffee filters with markers, then drop water on them to spread out the colors and make an art piece.

Additionally, the library of-

fered a station where children were able to make their own rain stick.

Using paper towel tubes, rubber bands, paper, beads and string the children created instruments that mimic the sound of rain.

The first experimental station was titled “What Dissolves in Water?”

At this station children were given a sheet of paper and asked to make scientific predictions as to whether four different items; salt, glitter, sand and baking powder, would dissolve in a cup of water.

The second experiment was titled “absorbent or not absorbent.”

This experiment was an extension of the first demonstration with diapers, and involved students ma k ing educated guesses as to whether an array of items would absorb water drops or if the water would slide off.

The children used droppers to drip water onto cup cake liners, cotton balls, card stock and napkins to check their hypotheses.

The final experiment station was titled “Does It Float,” where children made predictions and dropped certain items into provided tubs of water.

The goal of the event was to encourage children to take an interest in the science of water.

A display table in the middle of the room offered an array of books about water that were available for the children to read or to check out of the library.

Farmers’ market summer season begins at park

The Austintown Farmers’ Market opened for their first event of the year on June 11 at the Austintown Township Park.

The market had 32 vendors to start the year. These vendors ranged from dog rescues to artisans to farmers. Some sold homegrown fruits and vegetables, while others sold their home-made artisan foods, such as flavored popcorn and syrup.

“It’s a way to know your neighbors and local market,” said Shannon Lehn, the organizer of the event. She said she wanted to inform people about the local sellers while also giving a nice event for families.

The market offered a Mexican

food truck with an eating area and another truck that sold Hawaiian ice. They had a tents for the local veterans, farms, bakers and crafters.

“People get to see what others make at home; it’s fantastic,” said Janine Goddard of JeGo Headbands. She has been selling and making custom headbands at the market each week for the last four years. She enjoys making them because they allow her to have fun and be creative while working.

In addition to crafts and food, the market hosted unique activities as well. A violinist played music for those at the market, stopping at one point to teach little children easy songs on the instrument. A high school student also did face painting for chil-

dren to raise money for her trip to the National Speech and Debate Tournament. They also had a live yoga classes and a cooking demonstration.

“My favorite part of [the market] is that it’s family oriented,” said Danielle Fedor. She takes her family to the event each week and tries to buy from new vendors each time. She likes how many things are offered at each of the markets, which allows her to stay for hours with her family.

Lehn plans to have themed weeks for some of the other weeks of the market. Each themed week will benefit an organization, such as a “building community” week that will benefit Habitat for Humanity. The market occurs every Monday during summer from 5-8 p.m.

Mill Creek MetroParks hosted a story time for young children at Fellows Riverside Gardens on June 7.

Marilyn Williams, a naturalist with the park, created the Children’s Nature Hour for the park. The program focused on listening and seeing the wildlife present in the garden.

The event began at the Kidston Pavilion in the gardens.

The children had a small coloring activity to complete while other families arrived. Williams placed out mats for the children to sit on during the event.

Williams read “Quiet in the Garden” by Aliki, a story about a child who sits and listens to the animals in the garden. The child talked to animals and learned about what they eat.

After the story, the group went on their own walk through the gardens to see what they could see and hear. Williams led them through the park, and they stopped at certain spots to try and see wildlife. At a certain point, she gave the children binoculars to look for birds in the trees.

Hunter will officially sign her letter of intent in the fall. Hunter was recognized this past season, as a junior, for her 1,000th career point. Austintown Schools welcome new treasurer During a special board meeting on May 31, the Austintown Board of Education approved to appoint Ryan Ghizzoni as the new Treasurer for the district, effective Aug. 1.

Ghizzoni will work on a consultant/interim basis until his contract begins.

“Ryan has an impeccable reputation within the State of Ohio and his forward thinking, technolog y driven approach is going to be a great addition to Austintown Local Schools,” said Board President Don Sherwood.

Ghizzoni began his career with the Auditor of State’s Office and has served as a school district treasurer for the past 15 years. He is currently the Treasurer/CFO of the Berea City School District, a consultant for Public Resource Finances, serves as the President of the Ohio Association of School Business Officials and chairs the ASBO Meritorious Budget Award Advisory Committee, as well as, being a

national budget reviewer.

During his career, he has a lso ser ved a s Trea su rer/ CFO of the Stow Munroe Falls City School District, the Lorain City School District and the Fairview Park City School District. He has been the recipient of 9 Association of School Business Officials International Meritorious Budget Awards (ASBO) and was the recipient of the Ohio Association of School Business Off icia ls 2011 Outstanding Treasurer of the Year Award.

He is a past President of the Northeast Ohio Association of School Business Officials and has served on numerous local, state and national committees. He has a Bachelor of Business Administration from the Youngstown State University and is a Certified Administrator of School Finance and Operations.

He brings origami into the new millennium, combining classic Japanese style origami with the latest in high tech folding. He’ll transform single, flat squares of paper into 3D forms of animals, flowers, sea life, birds and decorative objects right before your eyes. One sheet of paper. No cuts. No tears. No glue. Understanding and responding to Dementiarelated behavior by Alzheimer’s Association Behavior is a powerful form of communication and is one of the primary ways for people with dementia to communicate their needs and feelings as the ability to use language is lost. However, some behaviors can present real challenges for caregivers to manage. Join the Austintown library on July 18 at 6:30 p.m. to learn to decode behavioral messages, identify common behavior triggers and learn strategies to help intervene with some of the most common behavioral challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. The multiple choice quiz, accessed by your phone or one of the library’s devices, will test your knowledge of some of the top songs from the past 50 years. Answer quickly and accurately to score the most points. The winning family gets to be first in the post-game refreshments line. Snacks will be provided.
