For the first time, the Po-

land Fire Department faced off against the Police Department in the Guns vs. Hoses softball tournament. The event also hosted a tour of the Truesdale house for the first time, celebrating it’s 200 year anniversary. “We like to include a number of new things each year, with out straying from the events the community expects every year,” Russo said. She said that the group was also able to lower prices on a number of events, including the children’s bounce houses. “We want to eventually be able to make everything free,”

Russo said. On June 28, the event started with a book sale by the Friends of the Poland library and the Strawberry Festival. The Poland Historical Society also hosted a Village Graveyard Tour by Poland Presbyterian Church. The day’s festivities ended with the annual Firemen’s Parade and live music by Disco Inferno. On June 29, the community participated in Chalk the Walk and the annual Pie Baking Competition. Giant Eagle of Poland also sponsored the annual Poland Idol Competition.

The event ended Saturday evening with Fireworks sponsored by American Fireworks. “We just wanted to have an event that brings the whole community together,” Russo said. “We have so much history in Poland and it’s important to celebrate it.” She said that the group will take July off, and then start planning for the 2020 Celebrate Poland in August. “It’s a lot of work but it is always worth it,” Russo said. Mill Creek Park hosts coyote lecture By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

The Mill Creek MetroParks Farm hosted a lecture on local coyotes on June 20. Cleveland Metroparks Wildlife Ecologist Jon Cepek presented at the event as part of the annual Naturalist Series. The Naturalist Series is a collaboration with the Metro Parks and OSU Extension and the Mahoning County Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist program. “We are so happy to see a crowd like this,” said Education Manager Mandy Smith. During the lecture, Cepek

discussed the facts and fictions of local coyotes. “It is important for people to be curious and enjoy nature,” Cepek said. He explained that he has been working with coyotes for more than 20 years, since his graduate school work. “For my work I field a lot of calls from the community, many of which are highly concerned when they have a coyote near by,” he said. Cepek said that public perception of coyotes, especially in the media, is often negative. This can cause the community to panic when coyotes move

into their area. “What we need to understand is that animals just follow their instincts,” Cepek said. He explained how human impact has greatly changed the natural environment of these animals. “Their environment changes because of what we do, and then people get afraid of them,” Cepek said. “They are just following their instincts.” The next lecture in the Naturalist Series will cover Katydids and Crickets on Aug. 10. To preregister for the event, go to www.millcreekmetroparks. org.

Librarian Karen Steed discussed deaf language and culture with children gathered at the Poland library on June 23.

Poland library hosts sign language camp By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

Poland library hosted the annual sign language camp on June 24. Librarians Karen Steed and Jenni Hemphill hosted the camp for school-age children. “We have grown a lot as a camp, we have a lot of local people who are really interested,”

Steed said. Both Steed and Hemphill have a similar background in kindergarten through twelfthgrade deaf education. Both women also are certified interpreters and full time library employees. “I started this club over three years ago and every year it gets bigger,” Hemphill said. During the event, Steed and

Hemphill teach children the basics of sign language. On the first day, children learn the alphabet, starting with their names. “We have a lot of kids who are returning year after year,” Steed said. “But I also see a lot of new faces.” Hemphill said that the group will also learn a lot about deaf culture during the camp.

“I think the program is becoming more known and recognized,” Steed said. “People are really seeing the benefits of sign language.” She said that the library plans to grow the number of sign language programs through out the year. For more information on upcoming programs, go to www. libraryvisit.org.

nature to explore the different habitats. “At this age the goal is to expose them to what the park has to offer, and to impart the importance of habitat maintenance,” Williams said. Children spent the week looking at birds, searching for box turtles and finding salamanders. “At this age many of the kids are shy at first,” Williams said. “But they get more comfortable as the week goes on.”

She said that along with learning about the park and its inhabitants, an important part of the camp is making friends. The week ended with a special boat ride on Lake Glacier. “By the end of the week children don’t want to go home from the park, and the encourage their families to come back throughout the summer,” Williams said. The park will host a number of other camps for different age groups throughout the summer. To learn more about these camps, and other upcoming park events, go to www.millcreekmetroparks.org.
