Fireworks celebration becomes family event By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Au st i ntow n c om mu n it y members celebrated the fifth annual fireworks celebration at Austintown Plaza on July 2. Austintown Trustee, Jim Davis, organized the event and worked to create something that the community members would enjoy. Last year, the event brought in around 7,500 people and this year it was anticipated to bring in close to 10,000 people. The event was run by volunteers, and everything, except the concessions, was free thanks to sponsors and donations. The main sponsors of the event were Hollywood Gaming, Briarfield Healthcare and the Austintown Plaza. “We’re very fortunate as a community to have the support of the individuals that help sponsor this,” said Davis. Tables were set up around the plaza with people from Austin-
town City Schools, Austintown Night Out and other organizations and businesses for the guests to learn more about. There were games, service vehicles and cops and firemen who gave tours of their vehicles. Children had the opportunity to get in the vehicles and see what they’re like on the inside. Many people brought lawn chairs to set out in the plaza as they prepared for the live entertainment to take the stage. “We wanted to find a way to bring the community together to have a fun event, something that was family oriented,” said Davis. 80’s Proof, Leanne Binder and Huckin’ Fillbillys provided live entertainment for guests to enjoy. At the end of the night, there was a firework display that lasted for more than 20 minutes and was accompanied by music. “This is something I hope that Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci continues long after I’m trust- Service cars and trucks were parked at the Austintown Plaza on July 2 for the ee,” said Davis. guests to look at up close during the annual fireworks celebration.

Car club tours hidden treasures of the Valley By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Around 30 Model A cars received plenty of looks as they drove through the Mahoning Valley the week of June 19-23. The Penn Ohio ‘A’ Ford Club takes a week-long trip every year to explore various cities around the United States and Canada. This year, Marti Altier was the tourmaster and decided to bring the club to her hometown of Youngstown and called it the Youngstown Steel Wheels Tour. There are around 80 people who attended the tour, from the ages of 4-89. The Penn Ohio ‘A’ Ford Club originated in 1955 and has
members from Western Pennsylvania and Ohio. The members are enthusiasts of Ford Model A cars who share a love of preserving, restoration and using of the cars. “They are the best people to travel with. Everyone usually carries something spare, so if there’s a breakdown most problems can be repaired roadside,” said Altier. The week started out with a trip to the National McKinley Memorial in Niles. The club will be touring several other places throughout Youngstown such as Lanterman’s Mill, the Butler Art Museum, the DeYor Performing Arts Center and more.
“It’s a wonderful tour, it’s been fabulous. Good places to eat,” said member Pat Proch who joined in 2001. Altier picked out the places in the area that would pique the interest of the members. There are some people who are traveling with several family members and others who came by themselves or just one other person. The point of the tour is to showcase where the club is visiting and learn about the hidden treasures. Altier wanted to pick out places that would highlight the area. It is the highlight of the See MODEL A, Page 6

Bike camp provides lessons for those with disabilities By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Down Syndrome Association of the Valley partnered with iCan Shine to bring the iCan Bike program to Mahoning Valley. From June 19-23, individuals with disabilities had the opportunity to participate in the fourth annual bike
camp at Boardman Glenwood Middle School. This year, there were 25 riders from 8-years-old to 51-years-old. The program is run by volunteers and many of them are students who are planning on working with individuals with special needs in the future. There are also parents and family members who volunteer their time.
iCan Shine and DSAV are both 501(c)3, nonprofit organizations and use money they receive from sponsors and donations to host different activities. The Youngstown Foundation has played a huge role in the program by helping out the DSAV and providing funds for them to host the camp. DSAV is grateful for all of the funding
they receive to help those in the community. “It opens up a whole other world for them because it’s a form of exercise. For adults it can be a form of transportation,” said Debbie Williams of DSAV, who coordinates the camp. All of the riders start out usSee BIKE CAMP, Page 8

Volunteers helped riders learn how to ride a bicycle during the iCan Bike program hosted by the iCan Shine organization and the Down Syndrome Association of the Valley.
Williams has worked with the families and volunteers to try and set up some of the volunteers that are willing to help out the children outside of the program. This way the children still are working on riding their bicycles after the camp is over. “This is my fifth year with the program. We got to impact 23 children and adults this week and we got to impact their families and siblings and friends. It goes beyond just the riders we have at the camp,” said Emily Horn of iCan Shine. The last day of camp, all of the riders went on the twowheeled bicycles. Some needed more help than others, but this showed the progress and that the riders have been successful during their time at camp. When the riding was over, all of the riders received a certificate, a trophy and picked out a backpack. DSAV is looking forward to continuing this program and helping out those individuals with disabilities accomplish something in their lives.

Soccer Vision Academy to compete for national title Neighbors | Submitted
Poland Freshman soccer player Teegan Graff helped her Soccer Vision Academy U16 Girls team win their first ever US Club Soccer Mid West Regional Championship. The US Club Regionals took place in Chicago on June 23-26. The girls competed in the Super Group Division, which is the highest level of competition. The team is now going to Indianapolis to compete for a national title. Soccer Vision had one loss in pool play and shut out the two top seeded teams en route to their championship. Graff is one of the starting center backs on a stingy defense that only allowed two goals the entire tournament. Soccer Vision’s U19 girls also won their first US Club Soccer Mid West Regional Championship as well. The U19 team was undefeated throughout the tournament. Both teams celebrated their milestones together with a twoteam group photo. Soccer Vision Academy has members from both Mahoning and Trumbull counties, featuring girls from Poland, Boardman, Canfield, Austintown, Howland, Lakeview, Niles, Champion and West Branch schools. Soccer Vision Academy girls teams are coached by Greg Mitchell of Boardman.
