Celebrate Poland brings togetherness to community By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Poland took part in the 11th annual Celebrate Poland event on June 30 and July 1. The free, family fun event brings together the Poland community to participate in various activities throughout the two days. Celebrate Poland started the evening of June 30 with a parade and a concert by Cleveland area retro band, Disco Inferno. Those who came to the concert wearing 80’s clothing were in the running to win the costume contest. The celebration continued on July 1 with several events for families and community members to participate in. There was a chalk on the walk contest, Poland Idol, Amazon Eric’s Reptile Show and more with the night coming to an end with a fireworks display. “We are trying to make this an exciting event for families,” said Cindy Best, president of the Celebrate Poland committee. Relay for Life a success

Neighbors | Submitted

The Poland Relay for Life had a great 2017 season, culminating with the annual event on June 23 and 24. This year’s survivors led the opening lap and then accompanied their caregivers to the complimentary meal provided by Belleria of Struthers. The teams had a very successful year raising funds for the American Cancer Society. Last year, the Poland Relay for Life hit their goal of $53,000. This year’s goal is $55,000, and so far the teams have raised $54,102.64. The teams have until Aug. 31 to reach their goal, so fundraisers are being planned for July and August. Anyone wanting to help the Poland Relay for Life reach this goal can donate online at www.relayforlife.org/polandOH or by mailing a personal check to: The American Cancer Society, Attention Poland Relay for Life, 525 N. Broad Street, Canfield, Ohio 44406. Write Poland Relay for Life on the check memo line. All donations are tax deductible. In addition to the summer fundraisers, The Poland Relay for Life is making big plans for next year’s event. The 2018 theme will be “Luau for Life.” This celebration of life, sand and surf will feature a luau for the survivors and caregivers, and tropical activities throughout the day. Every team will select a tropical island as their own inspiration. Anyone wishing to start a team should contact Kim Deemer at 330-423-8941.

items from clothing to food. In addition to vendors, there were different organizations set up to provide information about what they contribute to Poland and how community members can join. Best said the event is great

for the whole family to come and enjoy what Poland has to offer. It’s about bringing people together to show the sense of community in the area. The event is an all volunteer event and the Celebrate Poland committee started setting up for the event about three days in advance to ensure everything would be ready. Volunteers and donations from the

community allow Celebrate Poland to take place each year and to be free. Donations were accepted at the event to help with the planning for Celebrate Poland in 2018. Celebrate Poland is a tradition that the community members wish to continue every year. The event provides a place for the members to gather and spend time with each other.

PMS student races to finish first in state By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Poland Middle School student athlete Mia Musolino took first at the OSHAA State Track Championship in Columbus. “It was always my dream to go to state as a middle schooler, just to get the experience,” said Musolino. Musolino has been running since the fourth grade and joined the cross country team in seventh grade. While on the

team she learned that she prefers sprinting over running long distances. While many students are excited about the school year ending, Musolino, who also plays basketball, says she is going to miss her involvement in school athletics. She plans on participating in a Youngstown State University indoor track program over the summer to keep in shape. Poland Middle School hosted its annual sports banquet for

the eighth-grade students on May 31, where the students were honored with different awards and achievements. Musolino, along with some of her fellow teammates, received the National Federation of State High School Association Archie Griffin Award. Students collected non-perishable items during the club’s performance of “The Lion King KIDS” at the Fairview Center. The items were donated to the Pay it Forward Box located in Struthers and run by Joe Danyi, an MSMC dad, and the Little Free Pantry located in Mineral Ridge and run by Michele Nutt, an MSMC mom. Musolino has beat several school records, including some of her own, and has won several titles throughout her time on the PMS track and field team. She is thankful for her coaches, teammates, family, friends and everyone who has motivated her. “Mia was a pleasure to coach

the past two years. She has a great work-ethic and should be proud of her many accomplishments,” said Korisa Walton, head track and field coach. Musolino plans on continuing participating in track in field once she gets to high school and hopes that she has the opportunity to run in college.

Customers find treasures at trunk sale By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Poland Lions Club hosted its third annual Treasures of the Trunk sale at Poland Seminary High School on June 10. There was enough room for 100 vendors and this year more than 60 vendors set out tables and tents with items from crafts to foods to garage sale items. Each year the sale continues to grow and become

more of a success. “We sure hope we can keep building on it,” said Judy Young, coordinator of the sale. Aside from the vendors, the Lions Club had a table full of raffle baskets. There were more than 30 prizes that were available to win in the raffle baskets. The basket raffles were a way for the Lions Club to raise additional money. As the rain stopped and the sun came out, there were sev-

eral customers who came to shop. Proceeds raised from the event go back toward the community and to the Poland Lions Scholarship. The scholarship is something that a Poland Seminary High School student receives at the end of the year. The Poland Lions Club hosts several programs throughout the year for the youth, such as eye exams. The club not only helps the youth, but anyone

who is in need in the community. “I’d love to see this make a lot of money,” said Young. The Treasures of the Trunk sale takes place on the second Saturday of June, and next year it will be on June 9. The Lions Club is always accepting new members and people who wish to join can visit the Poland Lions Club Facebook or http://e-clubhouse. org/sites/polandohio/.

A warm up event was hosted at the Austintown Fitch High School football stadium on June 9 for athletes who were participating in the State Summer Games in Columbus on June 23-25. Many athletes like to come and showcase their talents locally before they head down to Columbus. This is the 48th year the State Summer Games have occurred and Austintown Fitch has been the practice location for all 48 years. The athletes participate in several events like softball, mini javelin and many others that will take place at the State Summer Games. David Grossman, chair and coordinator of the Mahoning County DD Special Olympics committee, worked with volunteers and coaches to help make the practice Olympics run a success. “It’s very fun to see people from that far away come down for something like this and all come together. It’s a fun way to incorporate everyone,” said Hannah Edwards, Canfield High School student. Between 100 and 130 students and people from different organizations and clubs throughout the Mahoning Valley take time to volunteer at this event. Many

Poland Freshman soccer player Teegan Graff helped her Soccer Vision Academy U16 Girls team win their first ever US Club Soccer Mid West Regional Championship. The US Club Regionals took place in Chicago on June 23-26. The girls competed in the Super Group Division, which is the highest level of competition. The team is now going to Indianapolis to compete for a national title. Soccer Vision had one loss in pool play and shut out the two top seeded teams en route to their championship. Graff is one of the starting center backs on a stingy defense that only allowed two goals the entire tournament. Soccer Vision’s U19 girls also won their first US Club Soccer Mid West Regional Championship as well. The U19 team was undefeated throughout the tournament. Both teams celebrated their milestones together with a two-team group photo. Soccer Vision Academy has members from both Mahoning and Trumbull counties, featuring girls from Poland, Boardman, Canfield, Austintown, Howland, Lakeview, Niles, Champion and West Branch schools. Soccer Vision Academy girls teams are coached by Greg Mitchell of Boardman.
