New Scouts BSA Girls Troop forming in Canfield The next gathering for a new Scouts BSA Girls Troop will be on July 24 at 7 p.m. in the parking lot at Canfield United Methodist Church, located at 27 S. Broad St. (State Route 46S) on the green. You do not have to live in the Canfield area to participate. The goal of this troop is to build self-confidence, leadership and life skills. The girls’ interest and their family’s dedication will make the troop grow and thrive. This is a girl-led program, where the girls are the youth leaders and will take it upon themselves to advance. They
will go through the same ranks and training of the traditional Boy Scout program, with the potential to achieve Eagle Scout. While proceeding through the ranks, the girls will learn skills and have experiences that will last a lifetime. It is a program with a backbone of guidance from many decades of experience within Boy Troop 25. Lisa Henry and Suzanne Heino have stepped up to lead the troop and are excited at the opportunities this provides for not only their daughters, but all in the community. Both have sons who earned their Arrow of Light in Cub Scout Pack 25 and now are in Boy Scout Troop 25. If you are unable to join on July 24, call or text either Suzanne Heino at 330-261-3127 or Lisa Henry at 330-519-3752 and they will send you an updated schedule and other details.

The Canfield library celebrated the books of Laura Numeroff with stories, crafts and more for children of all ages on July 6. Amanda Kollar, assistant supervisor, youth librarian, and Lyndsay Cramer, children’s librarian, hosted the story time. Kollar then read a fill-in-theblank of a portion of the story, while the children yelled out the answers. Next, Kollar led the children in dancing to “Do the Mouse Cookie Song” during which the children clapped, jumped and danced. Cramer then read the children “If You Give a Cat a Cupcake,” while Kollar animated the story with a puppet show. Next, the children gathered to play picture bingo, with a bingo card full of pictures from Numeroff’s books. They were asked to match their bingo cards with photos Kollar and

Cat a Cupcake,” children could decorate a cupcake with stickers and ‘sprinkles.’ At the second craft table, children could create a mouse out of the letter M by adding eyes, ears, a nose and whiskers, as in the book “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.” Kollar and Cramer also had
Numeroff book themed coloring sheets, a maze sheet, connect the dots and find the hidden objects sheets for the children to complete at the library or take home if they wished. Several Numeroff books were also available for the children to check-out and read at home.

Mill Creek Park hosts Park Pals summer camp By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com
Mill Creek Park hosted their annual Park Pals summer camp for 5- and 6-year-olds. Naturalist Marilyn Williams hosted the week long day camp for 12 children. “The park has been doing the camps for a long time. It’s a good way to get children out of the house and off of the electronics,” Williams said. The theme of the week was “Where the Critters Are,” which Williams said focused on different animals and their habitats around the park. “We have a lot of beautiful sights around the park, and even in a week we don’t have enough
time to explore them all,” Williams said. During the week Williams said that the group visited the Lily Pond, Bears Creek and the Old Log Cabin among others. She said that each day started with coloring before hiking into nature to explore the different habitats. “At this age the goal is to expose them to what the park has to offer, and to impart the importance of habitat maintenance,” Williams said. Children spent the week looking at birds, searching for box turtles and finding salamanders. “At this age many of the kids are shy at first,” Williams said.
“But they get more comfortable as the week goes on.” She said that along with learning about the park and its inhabitants, an important part of the camp is making friends. The week ended with a special boat ride on Lake Glacier. “By the end of the week children don’t want to go home from the park, and the encourage their families to come back throughout the summer,” Williams said. The park will host a number of other camps for different age groups throughout the summer. The children and their dads enjoyed a morning of fun and games, crafts and, of course, doughnuts. “This is a low-key event where the children can just hang out with their dads and have fun playing games and doing crafts. We have over 20 volunteers here today and I am just overwhelmed by the response. We all pulled together to provide a nice, memorable picnic for the kids,” Malkovits said. The PTA also provided a DJ playing music for the students in the gym and a photo booth to take photos as a souvenir of their special day. As an additional treat, the students were visited by Kona Ice, which gave each student a cup of Hawaiian shaved ice, courtesy of the PTA. Several students donned
