Mushroom guru and author Walt Sturgeon will present on the myriad colors, forms and habitats of our native macro fungi on Aug. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Poland library. Edible and toxic species will be shown. Folklore and examples of bioluminescent species, insectivorous fungi and hallucinogenic mushrooms will also be presented. Sturgeon is a member and trustee of the Ohio Mushroom Society, which has been affiliated with the North American Mycological Association since 1982. This event is for adults.

Bonding with babies and books This event, which will take place every Wednesday in August at 10 a.m. at the Poland library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s Join the Poland library on Aug. 15 at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Read to Roxie Relax and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with GO TEAM Therapy Dogs at the Poland library on Aug. 20 at 6 p.m. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. The Poland library hosted an event for teenagers to learn about the different materials used to construct cosplay armor. Librarian Renee Beverly hosted the event with 10 teenagers in attendance. “I really thought this would be a cool thing to try,” she said. Cosplay is the art of creating a personalized costume to match a fictional character. Beverly explained that the hobby has grown in popularity in recent years. “A lot of people like it, myself included,” she said. “But often it’s hard to know where to start.”’ Beverly explained that the two main materials used in armor construction are Worbla and Wonderflex, which are both thermoplastics. Funky flowers with the Youngstown Chapter of the EGA Join the Youngstown Chapter of the Embroiderer’s Guild on Aug. 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Poland library to learn Tenerife embroidery. Tenerife is a fast and fun needle lace technique that is great for decorating just about anything including clothing. The project is worked on the stitcher’s choice of patterned fabric and includes a variety of pearl cottons to personalize your flowers. YMCA hosts Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Kennedy Family Fund of The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley to support its fifth annual Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.: Finding Rewards In Every New Day, an inclusive day camp experience for children, teens

and young adult students with autism and their friends. The first program of its kind in the Mahoning Valley, Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. is facilitated by ABA Therapy Solutions. Camp will take place July 15-19 and Aug. 12-16 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. each day at the Central YMCA in Youngstown. The grant will help more families share in this fun, summer rite of passage by allowing the camp to expand the number of campers that can attend and enabling the Autism Society of Mahoning Valley to offer financial-based scholarships. Camp costs $150 per student per week and financial scholarships are available. Registration forms are available for download at AutismMV.org/campfriend and can be mailed by request by emailing ASMV at camp@autismmv.org. The Autism Society is still welcoming volunteers, interns and neurotypical peers to assist. Donations from individuals and business sponsorships are currently being accepted to help defer additional costs.

American Association of University Women of Youngstown recently donated money to SMARTS to support some of their programs for girls. Students Motivated by the Arts is “Making Summer Workshops.” These new, short, one-week workshops will give children the opportunity to meet new people, and experiment with visual art, music, dance, theater or creative writing. The workshops are taught using the approach of arts integration, so it will challenge them to explore the world, look at different topics and find ways to pull inspiration from other subjects. The Busters Brigade donated a scanner to the Mill Creek Park police department as part of their ongoing project to donate chip scanners to local police forces.

The Busters Brigade partnered with local law enforcement to reconnect lost dogs with their owners. “We do a little bit of everything,” said Trish Collins, a member of the groups board. “It’s just a matter of helping dogs and cats get into the best situation they can.” Collins said the group became concerned when they learned that a number of police stations locally don’t have a chip scanner, forcing many to take dogs and cats that are lost directly to the pound. They created a program to solve this problem, by donating scanners to interested law enforcement. “We just started reaching out and see what the need and interest was,” Collins said. “We were very surprised by the results.” She explained that the first interested group was the Campbell Police Department. After that the group has also donated to Poland, Boardman,

Struthers and event Mill Creek Park. The group also reached out to Canfield and Austintown police departments, who already possessed scanners. “It’s just really important to us to connect lost pets back with their owners as quickly as possible,” Collins said. The Busters Brigade is fairly new to the area, having started in October 2018. The group is a 501c3 organization and has been involved in a wide range of community service. This service includes teaming up with the YSU pre-veterinary group, donating dog food to Second Harvest Food Bank, and providing financial and material assistance to community members struggling to provide for their pets. “We understand that to a lot of people animals are important members of the family and we just want to make sure animals get to and stay in loving homes,” Collins said. Newcomers of Mahoning Valley recently donated to the “Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies” program supported by Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio. The program assists high-risk, pregnant women in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties. The focus of the program is to encourage early and consistent prenatal care making sure their babies are healthy and happy. The program helps mothers purchase much-needed items like disposable diapers, formula, baby bottles, WRTA passes for prenatal and well-child appointments, newborn clothing and blankets, and maternity clothing for the mother. “The students were broken into three houses, the oaks, the sassafras and the maples,” Zocolo said. “They competed all week to win the house cup.” Children spent the week walking through the “enchanted forest,” learning about healing and dangerous plants and event planting their own herb garden. At the end of the week, Zocolo said that the group spent the final day playing competitive games and celebrating with a feast. “We spent the whole week learning, so today we are going to take a break from that and focus on having fun,” she said. Historical society to host day trip

The Poland Historical Society will host a day trip to Pittsburgh on Sept. 18. The itinerary begins when the bus leaves from the Poland Methodist Church, located at 1940 BoardmanPoland Road, at 8:30 a.m., arriving in Pittsburgh at 10 a.m. and includes a visit to the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden, lunch at the Schenley Park Café, followed by a tour of the Frick Art and Historical Center and the Clayton Mansion. The bus will leave Pittsburgh at 5 p.m. for the return trip to Poland. The cost of this fundraiser bus trip is $115 and includes the bus, admissions and lunch. Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted a Family Fun Fridays event on June 21. The event is offered every summer by the park for children and

their families. Naturalist Lynn Zocolo organized the event, which runs from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. “It’s just a fun way to bring the community together and give children the chance to get out doors,” Zocolo said.

During the event, children worked on crafts, making bracelets to take home. The park organized bingo and sensory stations for children to play with. Volunteers also helped run the event, running a science experiment station.

Children were able to use glasses of water topped with shaving cream to simulate how rain works. “We use a dropped full of blue food coloring to show that the clouds can only hold so much weight before the water falls,”

Zocolo said. Free face painting was also available to the children. The event is hosted every other Friday throughout the summer. For more information on upcoming park events, go to www. millcreekmetroparks.org.
