Local church announces installation of a hearing loop system On July 30, First Presbyterian Church, located at 201 Wick Ave. in Youngstown, invites the public to come experience their new hearing loop system in the sanctuary at 10 a.m. The system will benefit members of the community with hearing aids and those who are hearing impaired without a hearing aid. Hearing aids have made significant improvements in the last decade, but in larger public places they are not able to make a person hear like they would like to. A hearing loop lets them hear clearly and without any difficulty. A hearing loop, also known as an Induction Loop, provides a magnetic, wireless signal that is picked up by the hearing aid when it is set to ‘T’ (Telecoil) setting. This telecoil is found in most modern hearing aids and all cochlear implants. For those who do not have telecoils in their hearing aids, the church has receivers with headsets available that perform the same function. Anyone who uses hearing aids is advised to contact their hearing care provider to make sure your instruments are properly adjusted for listening in a hearing loop or they can contact call the First Presbyterian Church at 330-744-4307.

Art and artifact sale to take place today Immaculate Heart of Mary Church will be having an art and upscale artifact sale that will feature many items from the travels of the late Father Joseph Fata. There will be crystal ware, paintings, sculptures and miscellaneous items, some religious. The sale will be at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Center, located at 4500 Norquest Boulevard in Austintown, on July 22 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Strategy board games at the library If you like to play strategy board games, go to the Austintown library on Aug. 12 at 3 p.m. to play games like “Ticket to Ride,” “Settlers of Catan” and “Carcassonne.” Play what’s there or bring your own to share. Light refreshments will be served. This event is for adults and teens.

Paper crafting corner Join the Austintown library every month to learn how to create a different paper craft. The August event will take place on Aug. 25 at 11 a.m. You must register. This event is for adults.

Meet Okie! Okie is a male, tan and white German Shepherd Dog and Boxer mix who is estimated to be 3-years-old. He arrived at Angels for Animals on Feb. 24, but is currently in foster care. The staff at Angels are taking applications and will call potential adoptive parents once Okie comes in.

Families experience Arabian Night tales

Eight high school students visited five libraries within the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system to put on an Arabian Nights performance.

The students ca me from schools such as Boardman, Ursuline and several others. Each performance consisted of four different fairy tales that were in the Arabian Nights collection.

The actors and actresses used props, costumes and a backdrop to help set the scene. There were four different performances including “Aladdin and the Won-

derful Lamp,” “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves,” “Sinbad the Sailor” and “The Three Princes and Princess Nouronnihar.”

Throughout each of the fairy tale performances, the actors would engage with the audience members. The performances incorporated some comedy to provide laughter and entertainment for the guests. The fairy tales kept the same story line, but were altered a little to make them family friendly.

Guests could go to the Austintown, Boardman, Canfield, Main and Poland library to watch the performance.

The theme of the June 23 program was pollinators. Don Kovach, a local beekeeper, had a table set up with honey and a hive with bees for the guests to look at. A representative from the Girl Scouts was there helping the guests make a mosaic flower craft.

has to offer. The Family Fun Fridays are run by volunteers who donate their time to ensure everyone has a good time.

The pop-up library from the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County comes each Friday and hosts a story time for the children. There is a face painting artist who paints children’s faces with different things that match that week’s

theme of the program. Different guests attend the event each week for the families to interact with.

“It’s always teaching a theme relating to gardens and nature,” said Tesner. “We get 100 kids sometimes on a beautiful day.”

The free event runs from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. and families can come and go any time they want within that time frame. Those who are interested can visit www.millcreekmetroparks.org and check out the event calendar to see the theme of each week’s program.

Captain Underpants surprised children at the Poland library on June 23.

There were games, activities and crafts for children set up all around the library that were related to the “Captain Underpants” book series.

The program started out with a story and a game of who

could guess all the names of t he “Capta in Under pa nts” characters.

As the children moved on to the different games and activities, they received a special surprise from “Captain Underpants” himself. Kuczek, dressed fully in a “Captain Underpants” costume, walked a round sig ning books a nd

posters and taking pictures with the children.

Children could create their own “Captain Underpants” nicknames, play with “PooDough,” decorate a pair of underpants and more. The “Captain Underpants” books were set out on tables that the children could check out as they left the party.

The 41st annual July 4th Flag Raising and Ecumenical Service took place on July 4 at the Austin Log Cabin at 8:30 a.m. As always, the Austintown Fitch Band Color Guard and a Fitch trumpet player performed the presentation of the colors. Pastor Russ Adams of the Western Reserve United Methodist Church was the keynote speaker. He provided a talk on the freedoms written in the U.S. Constitution. After the service, people enjoyed a continental breakfast in the log cabin and free, self-guided tours.

The 23rd annual Pink Ribbon Tea is being organized by co-chairs Pam Nock (Austintown) and Susan Stewart (Boardman) and committee members. The committee has planned a special afternoon of support, inspiration and hope for the breast cancer survivors. A gift basket raffle and goody bags will be available to all in attendance. Survivors attend for free as the event is supported by underwriters, sponsors and Junior League members. The Junior League of Youngstown Pink Ribbon Tea was started by Susan Berny and Annette Camacci. Berny requested a grant from the league and worked with the Susan G. Komen Foundation back in 1994. The first tea had 50 survivors in attendance. In its history, the tea has approximately more than 6,700 participants. Breast cancer survivors who would like to attend this year’s tea may call the Junior League of Youngstown’s office at 330-743-3200 for an invitation. RSVP must be received by the committee treasurer by Aug. 7. Valerie Cramer and Carl Martin were married at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 22, 2016, at Poland Village Baptist Church. Pastor Brian Etheridge officiated, and a reception followed at the Operating Engineers Hall in Boardman.

Parents of the bride are Tom and Dawna Cramer of Greenford. The parents of the groom are Carl Martin of Struthers and Laura King of Pittsburgh.

The bride attended Chatham University and is employed with Meridian Arms Living Center, Youngstown, as director of social services. The groom attended Ohio Christian University and is a cook for Shop-N-Save in Hubbard.

The bride wore a strapless, off-white gown adorned with beading and a lace overlay. It was completed with a lace-up back and chapel length train.

Lindsey Wade, sister of the bride, was matron of honor. Bridesmaids were MacKenzie Prus, and Brooke Martin, sister of the groom. Emelie Yobe, cousin of the bride, was the flower girl. The attendants wore pale blush-colored dresses.

Lance and Patti Ortenzio of Austintown are announcing the engagement of their daughter, Christine Ortenzio, to Brian Haverkos, both of Hilliard. The parents of the prospective groom are Allen and Linda Haverkos of Maineville.
