Local church announces installation of a hearing loop system On July 30, First Presbyterian Church, located at 201 Wick Ave. in Youngstown, invites the public to come experience their new hearing loop system in the sanctuary at 10
a.m. The system will benefit members of the community with hearing aids and those who are hearing impaired without a hearing aid. Hearing aids have made significant improvements in the last decade, but in larger public places they are not able to make a person hear like they would like to. A hearing loop lets them hear clearly and without any difficulty. A hearing loop, also known as an Induction Loop, provides a magnetic, wireless signal that is picked up by the hearing aid when it is set to ‘T’ (Telecoil) setting. This telecoil is found in most modern hearing aids and all cochlear implants. For those who do not have telecoils in their hearing aids, the church has receivers with headsets available that perform the same function. Anyone who uses hearing aids is advised to contact their hearing care provider to make sure your instruments are properly adjusted for listening in a hearing loop or they can contact call the First Presbyterian Church at 330-744-4307.

The Commons at Greenbriar has opened their building to the public who are looking to stay cool and out of the heat. Every Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., the building will be open and some of the rooms will be turned into cooling stations. The cafe and library will provide public spaces for people to relax. There is a television, books, games and other activities for people to enjoy while cooling down. Refreshments will also be provided. Meghan Miller, activities director, and Melissa Chambers, assisted living director, spoke with sheriffs about the need in the community for spaces like this. There are several members in the community, especially
seniors, who don’t have air conditioning at their homes. “We just want to be as welcoming as we can and help out the community,” said Chambers. The Commons at Greenbriar is one of the only places in the area that provides cooling stations for the public. Bike camp provides lessons for those with disabilities
By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Down Syndrome Association of the Valley partnered with iCan Shine to bring the iCan Bike program to Mahoning Valley. From June 19-23, individuals with disabilities had the opportunity to participate in the fourth annual bike camp at Boardman Glenwood Middle School. This year, there were 25 riders from 8-years-old to 51-years-old. The program is run by volunteers and many of them are students who are planning on working with individuals with special needs in the future. There are also parents and family members who volunteer their time. iCan Shine and DSAV are both 501(c)3, nonprofit organizations and use money they receive

from sponsors and donations to host different activities. The Youngstown Foundation has played a huge role in the program by helping out the DSAV and providing funds for them to host the camp. DSAV is grateful for all of the funding they receive to help those in the community. “It opens up a whole other world for them because it’s a form of exercise. For adults it can be a form of transportation,” said Debbie Williams of DSAV, who coordinates the camp.
All of the riders start out using the same bike and then as the riding skills progress, they move on to bicycles that are more advanced. The riders go through the progression at their own rate. The program has an 80 percent success rate with teaching the participants how to ride a 2-wheeled bicycle by the end of the camp. “It helps the volunteers understand and help to work with kids with disabilities,” said volunteer Cat Clarkson. “This is a good experience for him because he never learned how to ride a bike before,” said volunteer Blake Clarkson. The Clarksons are twins and are volunteering for the first time because their brother Nicholi is a rider in the program. They enjoy being able to spend time with him while helping him learn how to ride a bike. While some riders are coming for the first time, there are some who have came before. Williams has worked with the families and volunteers to try and set up some of the volunteers that are willing to help out the children outside of the program. This way the children still are working on riding their bicycles after
the camp is over. “This is my fifth year with the program. We got to impact 23 children and adults this week and we got to impact their families and siblings and friends. It goes beyond just the riders we have at the camp,” said Emily Horn of iCan Shine. The last day of camp, all of the riders went on the twowheeled bicycles. Some needed more help than others, but this showed the progress and that the riders have been successful during their time at camp. When the riding was over, all of the riders received a certificate, a trophy and picked out a backpack. DSAV is looking forward to continuing this program and helping out those individuals with disabilities accomplish something in their lives.

Family Fridays encourage fun and learning By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Fellows Riverside Gardens hosts a Family Fun Friday every Friday during the months of June and July. Each Friday has a different theme related to the garden for the families to learn about. There are different crafts, visitors and tables set up for the families to visit. The theme of the June 23 program was pollinators. Don Kovach, a local beekeeper, had a table set up with honey and a hive with bees for the guests to look at. A representative from the Girl Scouts was there help-
ing the guests make a mosaic flower craft. “You have crafts, you have something that you see, you touch, you taste. Usually something that appeals to all the senses” said volunteer Dorothy Tesner. Tesner has been a volunteer for about three years and enjoys all that Mill Creek MetroParks has to offer. The Family Fun Fridays are run by volunteers who donate their time to ensure everyone has a good time. The pop-up library from the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County comes each Friday and hosts a story time for the children. There is a

Weather balloon recovered
Neighbors | Submitted
Glenwood Junior High’s science program capped off a year full of STEM learning, wind experiments, hydroponics and creating a nationally certified wildlife habitat schoolyard garden with the school’s first weather balloon launch. Students launched the balloon on their last day of class, June 2, in the open field between Glenwood and the high school. It was sunny with ground temperatures in the low 70s, but the final data from the flight computer showed the temp at -13 degrees Fahrenheit at its highest altitude of 86,640 feet. The coldest temperature reached was -59.8 F on its descent at 49,439 feet. Science teacher Eric Diefenderfer thanked the Boardman Rotary for its donation, which made the purchase of the weather balloon kit possible, and YM Camera, who gave assistance with the Nikon camera attached to it. The balloon was recovered at Green Slopes Farm in Imler, Pa., about 174 miles and 3 hours away. Pictured are Jonathan Lawson (left) and Evan Diefenderfer (right) retrieving the weather balloon.

These improvements will enhance programming opportunities and student life as the auditorium is a central activity arena for the school’s forensics program, theatre productions, music education and productions, Link Crew and YES Fest activities, as well as future distance learning opportunities. On June 17, Home Savings Mahoning Valley Regional President Frank Hierro and Asst. Vice President/Senior Branch Manager Frank Constantino stopped by the school to present CMHS President Mark Oles and Vice President Mike Latessa with the grant check.
