CVMS students raise money for police K-9 By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
A group of seventh-graders at Canfield Village Middle School put their heads together to raise money for the Canfield Police Department’s new K-9 police dog, Rocky. The academy students of seventh-grade teacher Vicki Latimer organized fundraisers at the school and contacted local businesses for donations. The students, including Fatima Amin, Bryanna Corll, Bella DeBarr, Nikolette Duko, Sammie Johnson, Riley Miller, Grace Viets and Ally Wilson, sold Tshirts, dog tags and bumper stickers with the goal of raising $1,500 to purchase Rocky a K-9 vest. With their hard work and determination, the students surpassed that goal and raised a total of $3,800. After purchasing the vest, the rest of the money will be earmarked by the Canfield Police Department for any expenses

The third-grade teachers relayed the history of the locations to the students, highlighting the Ohio Historical Markers at the sites. The students received tours of the Mahoning Dispatch and Bond House, with presentations from volunteers at those buildings. During their stop at the War Vets Museum, Marie Rupert’s third-grade class was able to wander through the building, discovering all the artifacts
and history the building has to offer, including the large train display in the basement. To ref uel about ha lf-way through their tour, the students enjoyed a brown bag lunch on the green. The Hilltop Elementary PTO provided bottled water for the students during the tour and provided popsicles when the students returned to the school after their tour. This year marked the seventh year of the tour, which was originally created by Hilltop Elementary School third-grade teacher Jenny Beil and C.H. Campbell third-grade teachers Marian Bailey and Heidi Snyder. The teachers researched the historical stops to correlate with third-grade content standards, which includes learning about your local community.

Athletes prepare for upcoming State Summer Games By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
A warm up event was hosted at the Austintown Fitch High School football stadium on June 9 for athletes who are participating in the State Summer Games in Columbus on June 23-25. Many athletes like to come and showcase their talents locally before they head down to Columbus. This is the 48th year the State Summer Games have
occurred and Austintown Fitch has been the practice location for all 48 years. The athletes participate in several events like softball, mini javelin and many others that will take place at the State Summer Games. David Grossman, chair and coordinator of the Mahoning County DD Special Olympics committee, worked with volunteers and coaches to help make the practice Olympics run a success.
“It’s very fun to see people from that far away come down for something like this and all come together. It’s a fun way to incorporate everyone,” said Hannah Edwards, Canfield High School student. Between 100 and 130 students and people from different organizations and clubs throughout the Mahoning Valley take time to volunteer at this event. Many volunteers came from civic groups in the valley.
“Some faces change, but most athletes have been here before,” said Grossman. There were around 350 athletes who participated. Many of them are using this as a practice for the State Summer Games and others who didn’t qualify for the State Summer Games came to show the community what they can do. There were athletes from Trumbull Fairhaven, Mahoning County DD, Columbiana and more.
