Mill Creek ABWA to meet on Aug. 14 The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Aug. 14 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. Networking will begin at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu for the evening includes hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, macaroni salad, baked beans, salad, Jell-O and dessert. Playtime at your library Prepare for kindergarten through play on Aug. 7 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games

and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. Activities will vary at each program. This event is for ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

Bonding with babies and books This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize every Wednesday in August at 10 a.m. at the Poland library.

The first team at the Poland library’s Escape Hogwarts event worked together to compare the clues they had found. Clues could be inside books, on items, written in invisible ink and more.

Harry Potter fans solve clues to find lost diadem

S l e u t h s a n d f a n s f r om throughout the area came to the Poland library on July 19 to find clues and have fun as part of its Escape Hogwarts event.

The premise of the event revolved around a story that combined elements from several books in the “Harry Potter” series by J.K. Rowling. A descendent of Professor Quirrell had traveled back in time and stolen the Diadem of Rowena Ravenclaw, one of the founding figures of Howarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The teams had to find all of the clues and put them together to find the diadem so they could escape Hogwarts.

Each small team had 30 minutes to complete the task.

Librarian Annette Ahrens said that she was inspired to host the event because of the successful escape rooms hosted last year in Canfield and her own enjoyment of participating in an escape room on Neighbors | Natalie Wright vacation in Myrtle Beach. Historical society plans fundraising bus trip The Poland Historical Society is planning a fundraiser bus trip to Pittsburgh on Sept. 19. The trip includes a visit at the Heinz Memorial Chapel, the National Rooms in the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh, lunch at the Church Brew Works, tour of the Strip District and Downtown and a two hour cruise on the Explorer riverboat. The cost of the trip is $105 per person includes the bus transportation, admission fees and lunch. The bus will depart from Poland Methodist Church, located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road in Poland, promptly at 8:30 a.m. and attendees are asked to arrive at the church by 8:15 a.m. The bus will leave Pittsburgh at 5 p.m. and should arrive back in Poland at approximately 6:30 p.m. Questions should be directed to Larry Bartos, 330-757-4223. The deadline to sign-up for the trip is Aug. 11.

There will be no refunds after Aug. 11. Make checks payable to the “Poland Historical Society” and mail to The Poland Historical Society, P.O. Box 5052, Poland, Oh 44514, along with the following information: name, address, phone number, email address and check number.

found instructions on how to host a Harry Potter themed one on Pinterest, but she said she altered the instructions to fit what she wanted to bring to the library.

Many of the clues used in the event belonged to Ahrens.

She even brought a plant from home to use as a clue for the

Herbology portion. Other clues used in the game were books, including books from the actual “Harry Potter” series; puppets, small safes, locks, messages only able to be seen with use of a black light, theme-related clothing and more. Clues piled up on and branched off to the locations of other clues.

Some clues were even fake and meant to mislead the teams.

“I had a hard time not giving out clues because I want them

to succeed,” Ahrens said.

If the teams did need a clue Ahrens was on hand to help them out, but she said she enjoyed watching them search and put clues together. She was amazed at how clever the teams were and their luck at picking up just the right item to find a clue.

The first team to go through the puzzle finished with one minute and thirty-eight seconds left on the clock.

Beach and Ocean cookie decorating for beginners

The Mill Creek park hosted a cookie decorating class for beginners on June 26.

The theme of the class was beach and ocean and was taught

by Cindy Velt at the MetroParks Farms.

The class cost $36 to attend for residents and $40 for nonresidents, and pre registration was required.

Included in the cost was all

of the supplies, including four tubes of royal icing in different colors, 10 cookies, multiple icing tips, an edible marker and tooth picks to decorate the cookies.

The cookie shapes were all diverse but fit with the theme, including a fish, bikini, shell, bubbles and more.

Participants were allowed to keep the cookies they created, and given the short bread recipe to recreate them at home.

The 24th annual Junior League of Youngstown Pink Ribbon Tea will take place at noon on Aug. 20 in the Stambaugh Auditorium Ballroom. Doors will open at 11 a.m. The tea was initiated in 1994 to unite women of the area who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and to honor and celebrate them. This year’s honorary chair is Dr. Amy Beth Awaida of The Hope Center for Cancer Care. The Pink Ribbon Tea committee co-chairwomen are Pam Nock of Austintown and Susan Stewart of Boardman. During the class Velt provided step-by-step instructions to creating art with the cookies.

“Making cookies look really good can be easy if you know how to do it right,” Velt said.

She provided tricks and instructions on certain techniques to create the most ascetically pleasing cookie art.

Velt also allowed for creativity on the part of the students, letting them pick their own colors and patterns for the cookies as she instructed.

On June 27 the Poland libra r y hosted a DI Y fabric coaster making event.

All materials were provided by the library, including a range of fabric for participants to use to decorate their coast-

ers.

“You’re limited only by your creativity,” said Missy Williams, the adult programing librarian at Poland.

Williams provided all of the fabric from her home, and organized the event after being inspired by a project on Pinterest.

To begin the project each pa r t icipa nt was g iven t wo pieces of cork cut into circles.

They were allowed to pick out what ever fabric they wanted, including more than one type to create a pattern.

Nominations sought for Italian Fest The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2018 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and the Italian Woman of the year. The Kirchners feted on golden anniversary AUSTINTOWN Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kirchner of Austintown recently were honored on their 50th anniversary with a family dinner celebration at The Chophouse in Howland.

The event was hosted by the couple’s children: Raymond (Clyda) Kirchner of Warren; Lisa (Ron) Kaschak of Austintown; and Robert Jr. (Stacy) Kirchner of Howland.

The couple also have six grandchildren.

Mr. Kirchner married the former Kathleen Lewis on June 15, 1968, at the Fremont Presbyterian Church in Fremont, Pa. Mrs. Kirchner was a bank teller for Farmers National Bank in Canfield until she retired. She is a member of the Austintown American Legion Post 301 Auxiliary.

Mr. Kirchner was a driver for Conway Freight of Youngstown until his retire-

ment. He is a member of the Austintown American Legion Post 301. The couple are members of Christ Church Presbyterian in Youngstown.
