Local church announces installation of a hearing loop system On July 30, First Presbyterian Church, located at 201 Wick Ave. in Youngstown, invites the public to come experience their new hearing loop system in the sanctuary at 10 a.m. The system will benefit members of the community with hearing aids and those who are hearing impaired without a hearing aid. Hearing aids have made significant improvements in the last decade, but in larger public places they are not able to make a person hear like they would like to. A hearing loop lets them hear clearly and without any difficulty. A hearing loop, also known as an Induction Loop, provides a magnetic, wireless signal that is picked up by the hearing aid when it is set to ‘T’ (Telecoil) setting. This telecoil is found in most modern hearing aids and all cochlear implants. For those who do not have telecoils in their hearing aids, the church has receivers with headsets available that perform the same function. Anyone who uses hearing aids is advised to contact their hearing care provider to make sure your instruments are properly adjusted for listening in a hearing loop or they can contact call the First Presbyterian Church at 330-744-4307.

Girls at the Hogwarts Summer School program on June 21 at the Poland library made their own slime using household ingredients.

Wizards begin training at Hogwarts Summer School By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Children practiced magic at the Hogwarts Summer School on June 21 at the Poland library. When the children arrived they were divided into the four Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. After the children were sorted into their houses, they got a temporary tattoo and themed paper to decorate their wizard notebook with. There were several tables full of different experiments

the wizards-in-training could engage in. The experiments promoted hands-on learning and were focused on science. The children were given packets that included each of the experiments, instructions for the experiments, what should happen and the reasoning of why it happened. Before the children finished the experiments, they had to say a few magic words for the magic to happen. Several of the children came dressed in their favorite Harry Potter outfits. Some had a cape and glasses, others wore shirts of their favorites Hog warts

House and other clothing items related to the books and movies. As the program came to an end, the final experiment ever yone participated in was making their own ice cream. Each person had an opportunity to make vanilla, chocolate or strawberry ice cream by using milk, salt, ice and plastic bags. W hen Hog warts Summer School was completed the children left with more knowledge of the magic and wizardry of the “Harry Potter” series, not to mention their own ice cream.

Children get close up with exotic animals By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Austintown library got a special visit from some furry, feathery and scaly friends on June 21. Our Zoo to You, a traveling petting zoo located in Medina County, brought several of their animals for children and adults to admire and get up close to pet. There were a range of animals from mammals to reptiles. All of the animals that were included in the program are pets that Bryan and Terri Wise, owners of Our Zoo to You, have brought into their own home. People of all ages attended the program and watched in awe as each animal was brought out of their cage. Terri walked around the library talking about each animal and gave the children an opportunity to pet most of the animals. One of the first animals brought out was a chinchilla, one of the softest animals in the world.

Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci

There was a cockatoo named Floyd who came out and gave kisses to people. Children who were older and adults could volunteer to come to the front of the room and hold Floyd as he gave them a kiss. Two corn snakes were brought out and those who were brave enough could wear them around their neck. Two adults were called to the front of the room and held Rosie, a boa constrictor, who is one of the favorites. The last animal brought out was a wallaby named Irwin. Two last volunteers were selected to come up and hold Irwin as they fed him with a bottle. The Wise family uses Our Zoo to You to teach people about responsible exotic pet ownership and information about different types of animals. They provide information and the chance to see dozens of animals that a person wouldn’t normally be able to see and get up close to.

the word that they wanted to try and break a world record after seeing a similar event last year by the Dallas Winds. Leann Rich, band president, wanted to try and do the same thing in the Mahoning County. “I purchased a beginning piccolo and had three weeks to practice for Piccolo Palooza. To say it was challenging is an understatement,” said Penny Pavelko, a piccolo player. Pavelko really enjoyed her time playing with so many others. She said playing “Stars and Stripes Forever” is every piccolo players dream and people were happy to participate. Paveloko hopes this will become an annual event in hopes on more players will hear about it and participate.

At the end of the performance, piccolo players from all around the area came together to try and break a record of the largest group of piccolo players assembled to perform “Stars and Stripes Forever” with the Canfield Community Concert Band. There were around 100 piccolo players of all ages who joined the group to try and break the record. The Austintown trustees will send in a video of the performance to Guinness World Records. “I was very happy with the turnout – we did it all through free publicity and had players from as far as Canton and Slippery Rock, Pa. There were more piccolos than band members, that was a win in my book,” said Rich.

We look forward to another great season of success for our local teams!

Summer athletics have arrived and Neighbors wants to be there every step of the way. If you’re a sports coach or the parent of an athlete, we need your help. In order to get teams and players the recognition they deserve, we want to showcase them in our pages. We can only do that if you commit to sending us game reports and photos each week. If you send it, it will get in. You can email us at neighbors@ vindy.com. You don’t have to be a writer — just send us the information and we’ll put it all together. When emailing pictures, send them as JPEG files and as large as possible. Provide caption information and where people are located from left to right, front row to back. The sports news we’re looking for ranges from varsity high school teams down to middle school and even elementary and recreational leagues. We look forward to hearing about your teams successes.
