Local church announces installation of a hearing loop system On July 30, First Presbyterian Church, located at 201 Wick Ave. in Youngstown, invites the public to come experience their new hearing loop system in the sanctuary at 10 a.m. The system will benefit members of the community with hearing aids and those who are hearing impaired without a hearing aid. Hearing aids have made significant improvements in the last decade, but in larger public places they are not able to make a person hear like they would like to. A hearing loop lets them hear clearly and without any difficulty. A hearing loop, also known as an Induction Loop, provides a magnetic, wireless signal that is picked up by the hearing aid when it is set to ‘T’ (Telecoil) setting. This telecoil is found in most modern hearing aids and all cochlear implants. For those who do not have telecoils in their hearing aids, the church has receivers with headsets available that perform the same function. Anyone who uses hearing aids is advised to contact their hearing care provider to make sure your instruments are properly adjusted for listening in a hearing loop or they can contact call the First Presbyterian Church at 330-744-4307.

Ponies gallop to Boardman library By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Children spent the afternoon at the Boardman library riding ponies, making crafts and listening to stories on July 19. Workers from Ponytails Pony Rides and Petting Zoo brought in three ponies for children to ride.

Each guest who came to visit received a ticket and were being called up to ride a pony when it was their turn. There were different sizes ponies for children of different ages and sizes. As the children waited for their turn, they participated in different outdoor activities to keep them busy. There was a

story time where the assistant supervisor of children’s works, Karen Saunders, read stories about ponies and horses to children. There were also tables set up for children to make crafts and blocks to build different items. Cornhole was set up in the parking lot, a giant hopscotch

and bean bag toss were set up in the grass and several other games provided entertainment for the waiting children. When the children were called up for their turn to ride the pony, they sat on the pony as it walked several laps around the pen. The employees led the ponies around for the safety of the children.

Bud Jenkins was a true believer in the Boardman Lions. Because of his belief in the Lions, he refused to give up the charter, even when the membership dwindled to single figures. He was correct, and the club once again grew. When he died in 2015, he asked that memorial tributes be donated to his proudest charity: Boardman Lions/Target New Coats for Kids. In the club’s appreciation to him for his life-long devotion to Lions and his donations to the program, they placed a bench in his honor in Boardman Park near the Lariccia Community Center. A year later, Bonnie Jenkins (Dennis) Koch died unexpectedly. She also requested that memorial tributes be donated to Boardman Lions/Target New Coats for Kids. In appreciation for her generosity, her name was recently added with a plaque to her dad’s bench. Since 2009, the club has purchased 733 new coats from Target for a total of $33,272. As a result of the generosity of Bonnie Jenkins Koch and Bud Jenkins, hundreds of coats have been purchased. Captain Underpants posed with some of the children who attended the Poland library Captain Underpants program.

Children have a super time at the library By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

BOARDMAN

Captain Underpants surprised children at the Poland library on June 23. There were games, activities and crafts for children set up all around the library that were related to the “Captain Underpants” book series. Jen Kuczek, Mary Yee and Ashley Young, librarians with the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning Count y, all dressed up in giant pairs of underwear over their clothing. They also had “Captain Underpants” nicknames written on their nametags. The program started out with

a story and a game of who could guess all the names of the “Captain Underpants” characters. As the children moved on to the different games and activities, they received a special surprise from “Captain Underpants” himself. Kuczek, dressed fully in a “Captain Underpants” costume, walked around signing books and posters and taking pictures with the children. Children could create their own “Captain Underpants” nicknames, play with “Poo-Dough,” decorate a pair of underpants and more. The “Captain Underpants” books were set out on tables that the children could check out as they left the party.

Children had the opportunity to volunteer and have two cornsnakes wrapped around them during the Our Zoo to You program at the Austintown library.

Children get close up with exotic animals By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Austintown library got a special visit from some furry, feathery and scaly friends on June 21. Our Zoo to You, a traveling petting zoo located in Medina County, brought several of their animals for children and adults to admire and get up close to pet. There were a range of animals from mammals to reptiles. All of the animals that were included in the program are pets that Bryan and Terri Wise, owners of Our Zoo to You, have brought into their own home. People of all ages attended t he prog ra m a nd watched in awe as each animal was brought out of their cage. Terri walked around the library talking about each animal and gave the children an opportunity to pet most of the animals. One of the first animals brought out was a chinchilla, one of the softest animals in

the world. There was a cockatoo named Floyd who came out and gave kisses to people. Children who were older and adults could volunteer to come to the front of the room and hold Floyd as he gave them a kiss. Two corn snakes were brought out and those who were brave enough could wear them around their neck. Two adults were called to the front of the room and held Rosie, a boa constrictor, who is one of the favorites. The last animal brought out was a wallaby named Irwin. Two last volunteers were selected to come up and hold Irwin as they fed him with a bottle. The Wise family uses Our Zoo to You to teach people about responsible exotic pet ownership and information about different types of animals. They provide information and the chance to see dozens of animals that a person wouldn’t normally be able to see and get up close to.

He has also served on several committees and commissions of the Ohio Supreme Court, most notably the Commission on the Rules of Practice and Procedure for which he served as Chair for three of his six year term, during which time he authored and co-authored several changes to the Ohio Rules of Civil and Juvenile Procedure.

He will also become the Executive Director of the National Health Association, a health organization in which he has played a leadership role for nearly 40 years. The Association, now based in Boardman, has been advocating the benefits of a whole foods, plant-based diet since 1948 and publishes the award winning quarterly magazine, “Health Science.” In addition to his new administrative roles, Huberman plans to offer his experience and training as a Mediator — a service he provided with great success throughout the past five years at the Domestic Relations Court. Most of all, Huberman is committed to once again actively supporting the great Boardman Schools, where he served 20 years on the Board of Education, and to the many great organizations that help make Boardman “A Nice Place to Call Home.”
