Local church announces installation of a hearing loop system On July 30, First Presbyterian Church, located at 201 Wick Ave. in Youngstown, invites the public to come experience their new hearing loop system in the sanctuary at 10 a.m. The system will benefit members of the community with hearing aids and those who are hearing impaired without a hearing aid. Hearing aids have made significant improvements in the last decade, but in larger public places they are not able to make a person hear like they would like to. A hearing loop lets them hear clearly and without any difficulty. A hearing loop, also known as an Induction Loop, provides a magnetic, wireless signal that is picked up by the hearing aid when it is set to ‘T’ (Telecoil) setting. This telecoil is found in most modern hearing aids and all cochlear implants. For those who do not have telecoils in their hearing aids, the church has receivers with headsets available that perform the same function. Anyone who uses hearing aids is advised to contact their hearing care provider to make sure your instruments are properly adjusted for listening in a hearing loop or they can contact call the First Presbyterian Church at 330-744-4307.

The Canfield Republican Women’s Club Committee, “Caring for America,” has donated a scholarship for the third consecutive year. The award is given to a female cadet and based on her leadership abilities. Students in ROTC learn through a unique program that involves both classroom and “live” situations. For instance, an ROTC cadet might be found leading classmates through adventure training, down a wall during rappelling or during a lab geared towards first aid. When cadets complete the ROTC course, upon graduation, they become commissioned officers in the U.S. Army. The ultimate goal for ROTC is to commission cadets as Second Lieutenants in the U.S. Army. YSU ROTC expands a student’s education by providing leadership and management experience. This training helps students develop self-discipline, physical stamina and poise. The CRWC is proud to once again present this scholarship to the YSU Foundation and it will be awarded in the spring. The Canfield Republican Women’s Committee, “Caring for America,” recently donated money to AMVETS 44 to help with a yoga program for local veterans. Far too often, our Veterans’ service comes with a cost of unseen wounding. This is why a number of organizations around the country, as well as the military itself, is looking at the benefits of yoga for veterans. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a condition of persistent mental and emotional anxiety typically occurring after an acute trauma, but can also occur after long-term, chronic stress. Symptoms can include reliving events through flashbacks and nightmares, chronic hype-vigilance, depression, isolation, aggression and severe generalized anxiety. With PTSD, a person’s nervous system is reacting to the trauma of past memories rather than responding to present moment circumstances. Often, veterans may express reluctance to admit that they are experiencing the symptoms of PTSD in fear it might reflect on their ability to handle the pressures of the military. Recently, more research studies are finding that yoga techniques, when delivered in a trauma-sensitive manner specific to the needs of the veteran population, are having a positive effect on PTSD symptoms. Jan C. Brown Post 44 Commander, USAF SM/SGT (Ret), has plans to initiate yoga at the AMVETS 44 facility soon and the CRWC Women are happy to help raise funds for the purchase of yoga mats. Maroni welcomed everyone in attendance and explained the Spelling Bee rules. “Welcome parents, grandparents and fellow Hilltoppers to our Fourth-Grade Spelling Bee. We are glad you’re here for this special event,” Maroni said. Maroni started the Spelling Bee, during which the students competed for several rounds, with the words getting more difficult as the students moved through the rounds, until it came down to the final two spellers, Angelea Latone and Travis Mills, at the end of the 16th round. For the last two spellers, the rules changed. Maroni would say the word and use the word in a sentence. The contestant must then spell the word correctly to move on. If the word was misspelled, the other contestant must spell that word correctly and then spell a new word correctly to win the Spelling Bee After some stiff competition, Mills was crowned champion of the 2016-17 Hilltop Elementar y School Fourt h-Grade Spelling Bee. “Congratulations to our champion, Travis. And congratulations to all our spelling bee contestants,” Maroni said. Latone was named second place winner, with Nick Berardino named third place winner. Sixth-graders compete in Field Day By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
Sixth-grade students at Canfield Village Middle School participated in the tradition of the school’s annual Field Day to celebrate the end of the school year on June 1. The students, grouped by class, played games and ran relays to compete for the winner’s trophy. CVMS teacher Mike Richards led the students in their competitions. The score was kept throughout the competition to determine the winning team. Each team was assigned a
team color and team members wore that color T-shirt to show team unity. Teams were split into boys and girls and then Richards had the students participate in such games as the over-the-shoulder ball toss, hula hoop relay, scoop ball relay, a sack race, a full-field relay race, wall toss and finally, tug-of-war. With tough competition, Judy Parsons’ class came out on top of the tug-of-war battle. With the scores tallied, Sara Dysert’s class was named champion and Loraine Stanfar’s class was named runner-up.
