Teens have 30 minutes to escape library By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Teens had 30 minutes to solve riddles and try to escape the children’s room at the Poland library on July 18. Poland youth librarian Annette Ahrens made up a story plot to set the environment for the teens who participated in the escape room. The teens had to solve riddles, unlock locks and make their way out of the exit before they were accused of the crime. Ahrens sat in the corner of the room and watched as the teens worked together to try and solve
their way out of the room. If they got stuck on something and couldn’t figure it out, they could ask for a hint to help them out. One-by-one as each riddle was solved, there was a clue for the teens that would help them try and solve the next riddle. Clues were hidden and put in plain view all over the room. Time ran out before the first group solved the riddles and were able to escape. Fellows Riverside Gardens hosts a Family Fun Friday every Friday during the months of June and July. Each Friday has a different theme related to the garden for the families to learn about. There are different crafts, visitors and tables set up for the families to visit. The theme of the June 23 program was pollinators. Don Kovach, a local beekeeper, had a table set up with honey and a hive with bees for the guests to look at. A representative from the Girl Scouts was there helping the guests make a mosaic flower craft. “You have crafts, you have something that you see, you touch, you taste. Usually something that appeals to all the senses” said volunteer Dorothy Tesner. Tesner has been a volunteer for about three years and enjoys all that Mill Creek MetroParks has to offer. The Family Fun Fridays are run by volunteers who donate their time to ensure everyone has a good time. The pop-up library from the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County comes each Friday and hosts a story time for the children. There is a

Actors bring theater to the library By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Youngstown Playhouse Youth Theater brought their talents to several libraries in the Public Library of Mahoning County and Youngstown system. Children performed “The Princess and the Pea” for the families that attended the li-
brary. The performers interacted with the audience members to give them the opportunity to be part of the performance. Some of the children in the audience were brought up to the stage to be featured for different parts of the play. The actors have been practicing their performance for more than a month. They had to work together to make sure everyone
had their lines memorized correctly, get costumes together and other behind-the-scene action. At the end of the performance the cast members introduced themselves and hosted a question and answer session. The audience had the chance to ask the performers questions about practicing, costumes and any other topics about their experience.
People in the audience who attend t he performances are those who enjoy watching theater and some are involved in theater themselves. Representatives from the Youngstown Playhouse were there for those who were interested in more information and classes at the Youngstown Playhouse.

Children get close up with exotic animals By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Austintown library got a special visit from some furry, feathery and scaly friends on June 21. Our Zoo to You, a traveling petting zoo located in Medina County, brought several of their animals for children and adults to admire and get up close to pet. There were a range of animals from mammals to reptiles. All of the animals that were included in the program are pets that Bryan and Terri Wise, owners of Our Zoo to You, have brought into their own home. People of all ages attended t he prog ra m a nd watched in awe as each animal was brought out of their cage. Terri walked around the library talking about each animal and gave the children an opportunity to pet most of the animals. One of the first animals brought out was a chinchilla, one of the softest animals in
the world. There was a cockatoo named Floyd who came out and gave kisses to people. Children who were older and adults could volunteer to come to the front of the room and hold Floyd as he gave them a kiss. Two corn snakes were brought out and those who were brave enough could wear them around their neck. Two adults were called to the front of the room and held Rosie, a boa constrictor, who is one of the favorites. The last animal brought out was a wallaby named Irwin. Two last volunteers were selected to come up and hold Irwin as they fed him with a bottle. The Wise family uses Our Zoo to You to teach people about responsible exotic pet ownership and information about different types of animals. They provide information and the chance to see dozens of animals that a person wouldn’t normally be able to see and get up close to.

CLASSIC ROCK CONCERT SERIES 2017
“I purchased a beginning piccolo and had three weeks to practice for Piccolo Palooza. To say it was challenging is an understatement,” said Penny Pavelko, a piccolo player. Pavelko really enjoyed her time playing with so many others. She said playing “Stars and Stripes Forever” is every piccolo players dream and people were happy to participate. Paveloko hopes this will become an annual event in hopes on more players will hear about it and participate. At the end of the performance, piccolo players from all around the area came together to try and break a record of the largest group of piccolo players assembled to perform “Stars and Stripes Forever” with the Canfield Community Concert Band. There were around 100 piccolo players of all ages who joined the group to try and break the record. The Austintown trustees will send in a video of the performance to Guinness World Records. “I was very happy with the turnout – we did it all through free publicity and had players from as far as Canton and Slippery Rock, Pa. There were more piccolos t ha n ba nd members, that was a win in my book,” said Rich.
