Annual Polish Heritage The National Buddy Walk Festival Program In preparation for its seventh annual The Down Syndrome Association of the Valley 2015 Buddy Walk is one of more than 250 Buddy Walk events planned in cities across the country and around the world this fall in and around October in celebration of Down Syndrome Awareness Month. The Buddy Walk was developed by the National Down Syndrome Society to promote acceptance and inclusion of all people with Down syndrome. On Aug. 8 at 10 a.m. anyone wishing to join the cause can go to The Shops at Boardman Park. For more information, visit www.buddywalk.org.

Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA to meet The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 11 at A La Cart Catering, located at 429 Lisbon Street in Canfield. Tim Seman, genealogy and local history librarian of The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will speak about preserving family history. Special guests will be the chapter’s scholarship recipients. The dinner menu includes hamburgers and hot dogs, baked beans, potato, pasta, fruit salads, coffee, tea, iced tea and apple cake. Polish Day on Aug. 30 from 10:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. at St. Luke Church and Hall on South Avenue in Boardman, organizers are seeking marketplace vendors of all types who are seeking to reach their enthusiastic, shopping attendees.

PolishYoungstown has vending space for 10 marketplace vendors, who will offer any variety of information and merchandise for our patrons during the festival. Authentic ethnic retail, craft, fine art and food vendors are especially requested, but all interested groups are welcome. The deadline for vendors is Aug. 7. Tanna Sebrell, a Family Night in the Park veteran, said she loves being back for another year to the festivities in Boardman Park – her family has been coming for years.

Sebrell said her favorite part of Family Night in the Park was the movie.

“We love the movie because it’s outside,” Sebrell said.

Sebrell’s three children and friends spent the majority of their time running to-and froaround the park with their balloon swords, battling one another.

“The music is nice, too, the kids get to dance around and act like fools,” Sebrell said.

Adult culinary students open the Bistro at MCCTC

On July 11, students from Youngstown State University teamed up with those attending Adventure Day Camp at the Boardman Park to get their hands dirty and dig like archaeologists.

On July 10, Adventure Day Camp in Boardman Park had some specia l v isitors from Youngstown State University.

For the second year, students from the departments of archeolog y and anthropolog y came to teach children of the camp about what they do and how they do it. Children performed an archaeological dig, finding artifacts in the sand of the volleyball court.

Olivia Johnson, president of the Anthropology Colloquium, said she thinks this event is a great learning experience for the children in Adventure Day Camp.

“I think that it’s awesome to show kids how we know what we know about history,” Johnson said. “There are a lot of things in archaeology that have been found that made a lot of other discoveries possible.”

Tom Delvaux, YSU professor, said he liked that the event was all about the students — both those from YSU and the children in Adventure Day Camp.

Many of the activities provided were interactive.

“Nearly everything we have they are allowed to hold in their hands and look at,” Del-

The Bistro is run by the adult culinary students enrolled in the culinary arts program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center. This gives students the chance to gain experience in all facets of working in the restaurant industry, from working as kitchen staff and the Sous Chef to waiting tables and hosting. The Bistro accepts cash and checks only and reservations are needed in advance.

Youngstown Shrine Club to have rib roast The Youngstown Shrine Club has announces that its annual Prime Rib Roast event is scheduled for July 25 at the club’s outdoor pavilion. Recruitment and team registration taking place The Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Area Chapter is inviting Mahoning and Columbiana County area residents to form teams and register to participate in the Mahoning Valley Walk to End Alzheimer’s© on Oct. 10 at the Watson Tressel Training Site at Youngstown State University, located at 651 Elm Street in Youngstown.

The Walk is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support, education and research. Check in is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. and opening ceremonies will begin at 9:30 a.m. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s takes place annually in more than 700 communities.

The event is an inspiring and meaningful experience that calls on participants of all ages to share their collective voice as an advocate, walk in honor of their loved ones and help raise awareness of programs and services available to families affected by Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, there will be refreshments, basket drawings, a children’s corner and entertainment, as well as other activities.

Delvaux said some of the children were really interested in the entire process and what the YSU students had to say.

“The kids are having a blast with this and they are learning about history and the science,” McCallum said. “It’s not just one thing that they have to learn.”

Jessica Mriso, the science instructor for Adventure Day Camp, said this interest the children in Adventure Day Camp had in their guest visitors really helped programs like this run smoothly.

“They are getting to do a bunch of different stuff that they probably don’t get to do in school,” Mriso said. “They get to do all the different experiments that you hear about that sound so cool that you don’t necessarily get to be able to do.”

This event was quite popular the year before, so popular that there were several people inquiring about the return of it.

“People were asking what week the archeologists would be here,” Delvaux said.

McCallum said she is very grateful for YSU being able to come out and work with the children and instructors for Adventure Day Camp.

On July 1, Margaret Voytko, resident of Boardman Shepherd of the Valley, traveled to the Cleveland’s Horseshow Casino in a limousine, compliments of Fab Limousine.

Resident takes dream trip Boardman Shepherd of the Valley resident Margaret Voytko was an avid gambler with dreams of visiting Las Vegas.

Unable to travel across the country, the staff of Shepherd had plans for her to win big on a trip to Cleveland’s Horseshow Casino on July 1.

Voytko is an 83-year-old resident and gambled for fun for years. She has visited most casinos within a day’s drive and loves playing penny and quarter slots.

“When I play, I like to think about the time I hit for $7,000 on a quarter machine. That was a good day,” Voytko said.

She has always dreamt of winning big in Las Vegas but due to her health issues, she is unable to travel to Nevada. She was excited when she heard that The Horseshoe Casino was opening in Cleveland and could not wait to visit and experience all that the casino had to offer. Unfortunately, around the time of the grand opening, Voytko fell ill and was moved into Shepherd of the Valley. She had been a resident ever since. To get her slot fix, she plays games on her iPad but misses the sights and sounds of a real casino.

Shepherd wanted to give Voytko the opportunity to experience The Horseshoe Casino and reached out to them. Spe-

cial Projects Coordinator Katie Marks responded enthusiastically to give Voytko a special day.

“We are so glad Margaret has chosen to come to the Casino for a day of fun! We are excited to help show her a good time and would love to make this day as special as we can for her,” Marks said.

The Casino is provided Voytko with lunch and souvenirs. She also had the opportunity to participate in Super Senior Wednesday and try her luck at winning $55 in free slot play.

Voytko headed to the Casino is style compliments of Fab Limousine. She left for Cleveland on July 1 at 9 a.m. in a stretch limo. Upon arriving to the casino, Horseshoe staff greeted her with a bag of souvenirs. They provided lunch for her and made sure she got the royal treatment all day. While she did not hit the jackpot, Voytko did return home with $50 in winnings.

Shepherd of the Valley participates in Second Wind Dreams, an international, nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the perception of aging through the fulfillment of dreams. In 2014, Second Wind Dreams recognized Shepherd of the Valley as one of the top five organizations participating in the program.
