Finding something for everyone at the Farmer’s Market By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com

The Austintown Township Park hosted the Austintown Farmer’s Market on June 29. At this Farmer’s Market, vendors joined together in promoting their products and knowledge for consumers to shop with. Shannon Colleen, market manager for the Austintown Farmer’s Market, said she was excited for this summer-long market to get going — a waiting list is already in place for vendors to participate. “We try to bring non profits out to be able to provide kids’ events,” Colleen said. “We really wanted it to be more about a community. We want to be able to teach and empower.” In addition to events for children, there are two yoga classes offered during the Market, as well. Colleen said she enjoys the community aspect of the market in addition to the help and support they provide for one another. She brought up an instance of the week previous when she got caught up with something

and had to return to the market later only to find her tent already folded up for her. “Everyone here takes care of one another and it’s fantastic,” Colleen said. “I consider everyone here a friend. It’s just about community and bringing people together and really doing good. Colleen continued that another important part of the market was the opportunity to provide

Goddard said she started making them for her daughter and has since decided to branch out and make it more than a hobby. Her husband helps her create displays for them as well. A different kind of furry family business was Oakley’s Heart, a

dog adoption foundation. “We try to promote the adoptable dogs,” said Krista Milford, Oakley’s Heart’s founder. One of the most popular vendors was Jamie Gemmel, owner of Grass N Grace Farm. Gemmel sells homemade soaps and body products. She said her motivation behind it was her own four children — reading ingredients on

products she was using with them made Gemmel nervous, so she decided to make a more organic alternative. “I like being able to give people something that is pure and whole and chemical free,” Gemmel said. The Austintown Farmer’s Market is every Monday from 5-8p.m. until the middle of September.

Reptiles reign at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

The Mill Creek MetroParks Farm’s Reptile Exhibit featured some scaly, slithery creatures, such as snakes, lizards, bearded dragons and geckos, on July 26. Members of the Northern Ohio Association of Herpetologists (NOAH) and Keith Gisser of Herps Alive brought such creatures as a black and white tegu, an albino Burmese python, a corn snake and king snakes to display. Sue Bixler from The Ohio State University’s Franz Theodore Stone Laboratory was on hand with a display about Lake Erie Water Snakes and other island reptilian residents. According to Ray Novotny, outdoor education manager and coordinator of the exhibit, the event was started in 1987 and has taken place every other year. “For me, snakes drew me to nature as a kid and my love of it has never gone away. This event is to educate everyone about reptiles and create an interest in them, especially for the children. Snakes are so intriguing to people but they may fear them. A group of teens and adults from Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Austintown responded to a request for assistance from an older church member who is now the full-time caretaker of his wife who suffered a stroke last year. Austintown resident, John Patterson, wanted his wife, Marcia, to be able to enjoy the flower garden she had tended for many years, but neither she nor John could get to it this year. In his request, published in the church bulletin, he indicated that he would like to be able to wheel her out to the garden to enjoy the flowers this summer. The Youth Ministry Justice and Service Team, led by Angela Smith, responded by mobilizing a group of nine children and four adults who gathered donated supplies, mulch, flowers and shrubs. They arrived at the Patterson home on a sunny July morning and finished the job in one day. Included in the photo, from left, are Emma Rich, Paul Gavin, Angela Smith, Jake Gochneaur, Gregg Manners, Cheri Manners, Rebecca Kielbasa, Mariah Rovnak, Karen Conkey, Chris Gerberry, Zack Fuller and Angie Smith. Austintown library lets it go at the ‘Frozen’ Summer Party By amanda tonoli atonoli@vindy.com

The Austintown library let it all go at a special themed party to celebrate summer with the popular movie “Frozen.” Librarians Jen Kuczek and Ashley Potopovich hosted the party, making sure everyone got the most out of the various activities that included crafts, games, pictures, treats and more. The two dedicated much of their time to refilling refreshments

and materials for the interactive activities and crafts. Potopovich said she was ecstatic about the huge, successful turnout. “I think there are at least 100 people here,” Potopovich said. Many parents and young girls came dressed up as characters or with “Frozen” T-shirts for the festivities. Lydia Andres and her daugh-

ter, Emily, picked up a pack of snacks on the way in, containing themed treats. Emily Andres said she enjoyed making a snowman out of a few marshmallows found in her baggie. Her mother, Lydia Andres, said she appreciated the incorporation of learning elements

into the event. “It’s cool how they tied in science with the displays and activities,” Lydia Andres said. “It’s nice that everything is interactive.” Kristin Woods, mother of two children waiting in line to make “Frozen”-themed crafts, said she liked being able to come out to events like these and seeing so many other people as well. “It’s great getting everyone out to one big party,” Woods said.
